  1. A whole bundle of the Impulse '2LPs on one CD' series for £3 each at the good ol' London FOPP at Cambridge Circus.
  2. Amazing that I haven't bought any of them yet and probably now won't. It's not as if I didn't get the chance - being next to a rack jam packed full of them at Disk Union !
  3. Kenny Dorham 'Matador' (King) One example where an out-of-tune piano adds to the ambience !
  4. Wayne Shorter 'Speak No Evil' Another Pathe Macaroni brought back from the dead and sounding - excellent !
  5. Hiroshi Tanno closed the Early Records business up quite a few years ago, I'm sorry to say. A great loss !
  6. Indeed - I have dozens of these things, which were effectively my intro to Blue Note. They have been stuck in my racks for years, amazing I didn't dispose of them really. Golden rule - never, ever get rid of vinyl !

Ah - the Cliff Adams Singers with that guy on accordion. I have the feeling that one might have been on just before the jazz. Very much 'of its time'.

Blimey - with spoken intros by David Jacobs. Almost like a time warp.. Nice to see some more Vic Ash out there.
  9. Walked across that one and back the day after it opened !
  10. Used to have a somewhat worn Liberty gatefold, which was my dad's. I wasn't as struck by the music as I'd hoped to be. I have the Liberty of this one as well. The DMM has sat on the shelf for years, really surprised how good it sounds. This has always been a favourite Herbie session, along with 'The Prisoner'.
  11. Herbie Hancock 'Speak Like A Child' (BN French Pathe Marconi DMM) It should be garbage but with the phono stage having been z-foiled it sounds pretty damn good ! Time to dig out the old DMMs..
  12. Gee, thanks for the reminder. 30 years ago. Man! The Brooks was the first Mosaic I ever purchased. Yep, they were already nearly 20 years old by the time I finally picked this up. Mosaic wasn't even on my radar at the time this set was issued - quite obscure and difficult to get hold of in the UK in the pre-internet days. Not to mention very expensive ! Don't remember ever seeing any Mosaics for sale in Canada either, which is sort of suprising - although having said that I rarely saw any old Blue Notes there either.
  13. I have a copy of this set - will dig it out as it is too long since I last spun the LPs.
  14. Tina Brooks Blue Note, LPs 1 and 2. As Richard Williams' blog reminds me, released this Mosaic released just 30 years ago !
  15. Jackie McLean 'Capuchin Swing' (BN 47W63rd DG mono)
  16. Lee Morgan 'The Gigolo' (BN Liberty blue/white)
  17. Mine is a UK pressing, which I think was put out by UK CBS. Gave it a good listen cranked up and the sonics are absolutely excellent, with low noise floor. A very under-rated Thad & Mel album IMO.
  18. Abouyt 1996/97 I think - when the Bruce Lundvall era Blue Note was on a roll and the Conn reissue series was at its height.
  19. That Blue Note documentary was one of the most maddening jazz docs ever - storyline jumped all over the place as if the producer had ADD. On the other hand, it was interesting to hear from Alfred Lion's wife/former wife and there were some pricecless interview clips of some sadly now departed musicians. Not to mention footage of M. Cuscuna interviewed in the Mosaic warehouse surrounded by black boxes ! Why the heck was the speed of the Brubeck 625 sound all over the place, when this one had supposedly been 'restored'? Jeez....!
  20. Thad Jones/Mel Lewis 'Potpourri' (Philly International)
  21. Belated best wishes !
  22. Let's hope ! Wasn't there also talk of a Wayne Shorter documentary? They were filming part of that at the Barbican performance a year or so back and I have been waiting for mention of that one ever since.
