  1. Sonny Rollins 'Saxophone Colossus' (Prestige Bergenfield DG mono)
  2. Dennis Skinner Skinny Ennis Chummy McGregor
  3. Was he a Viking? I'm sure that many jazz wives would love to do such a 'ceremony'..
  4. Damn hot here too - we'll all be frying in the South of England tomorrow ! I burnt loads of garden waste earlier on and it was almost a case of spontaneous combusion..
  5. Still scratching my head after watching these two. Maybe another viewing will help me work them out..
  6. Arnie Weinstock Arnie Weinstock's Army Arnie Somogyi
  7. Big John Patton 'Got A Good Thing Goin'' (BN NY USA mono)
  8. Happy Birthday Stereojack !
  9. Pat Martino 'East !' (German SABA pressing, stereo)
  10. Julian Vereker Julian Cope David Icke
  11. I wonder if they've sorted that out for the re-issue? Acording to Dave Gelly's article the sound is much improved, so this CD version sounds like a 'must have'. I'm trying to think who was in the 'Major Surgery' reunion at Swanage way back. The late Tony Marsh was on drums I think but not sure of the rest of the band. There have been some good articles in Jazz Journal of late. Much improved magazine.
  12. Duncan Lamont is still playing beautifully ! He was in the big band for both the 75th and 80th birthday tours. That Mr Benn show was easily the best thing on the 70s BBC kids lunchtime slot. Reminds me of lazy Summer hols with new school year about 10 weeks away. Sounds like a 'shoe-in' for the Trunk label..
  13. 'Jazz Journal' this month has a nice article by Dave Gellly on Don Weller and Major Surgery. The original LP was only 500 copies apparently but flawed by excessive noise reduction.
  14. No, nowhere near as many. I'm not in the 'Brownie' league.
  15. Yeah, I've got that one on Ember too. Must dig it out !
  16. The only jazz record I know with the seal of the Old Peculier of Masham on it
  17. Good stuff ! Don Weller performs regularly at Swanage but hasn't been there for a few years now (in recovery from a major operation I believe). He and his various bands are always worth checking out (especially the Octet). I think I saw a reunion of Major Surgery at Swanage some years ago now.
  18. 'Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge at the Opera House' (Verve DG mono) Excellent sounding LP which captures Hawk's big sound perfectly. This one has Stanley Dance's personal stamp on the back with a Braintree, Essex address and some ancient telephone exchange number. Wikipedia says he left Braintree for the US in 1959 so must have been the original owner. Track timings are marked on there too so my guess is that he put these in for a Jazz Journal review way back then. Nice !
  19. Yes - the 'Mr Benn' complete series DVD is a great British Jazz 'sleeper' session . Been a fan of that stuff since childhood. Ray Swinfield's flute is heavily featured. No doubt Mr Benn was a big influence on the film 'Eyes Wide Shut' and that dubious theatrical wear shop. Kubrick must have been a fan..
  20. Not sure which is more lunatic - the prices fetched on this auction or recent prices for not-so-rare Blue Notes.
  21. Earlier today - Art Blakey 'Three Blind Mice' (Solid State stereo, Liberty-era). Suprisingly good sonics !
  22. Best Wishes !
