  1. Didn't Satchmo also do a stint at the Batley Variety Club? (they must have squeezed him in the schedule between Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdinck) Vaguely remember hearing about that.. I'm pretty sure a relative of mine saw most of those. Certainly caught the JATP and other Norman Granz events there (yes, I think it was St George's Hall). Sadly, I was still listening to Noddy and his Car.
  2. I hear you ! Those Plastylite NY USA pressings are always good.
  3. About £200-ish for a original 47W63rd in A-1 nick now, I think.
  4. Wow - did Tristano have much to say? If I remember right, wasn't that Harrogate gig the only one he did on that visit to the UK. Plus of course, Mike Westbrook recorded the 'Citadel/Room 315' at the old Leeds Poly and lots of JATP tours went through both Leeds and Bradford (Alhambra). Those towns were (reet) smokin'
  5. Delving through the catacombs of my collection this fine Saturday.. Benny Golson 'Stockholm Sojourn' (UK Stateside, mono)
  6. I've got both of these on UK Stateside mono LPs from the 60s and the sound is excellent. Very similar cover art. There was an earlier Esquire issue over here but I haven't heard those. Cool Wardell cartoon-like picture on them. Those Frank Morgan/Teddy Charles tracks have some weird sonics - and an out of tune piano. Great music though.
  7. Hey I like that one! But yeah you have to have a soft spot for commercial funk. The second album is actually better than the first. A lot of it sounds like theme music from "The Love Boat", an American TV series from the 70s. Thanks - I'll avoid that one then.
  8. Wow. That 780 model was the one I bought - in late 1978 !! In fact my parents are still running the thing, it looks 'near new' and still sounds fine (the FM tuner is no slouch). Certainly a bargain when you consider how it has been used. And the lights are still all working ! I ran it with a Dual direct-drive turntable, Mission speakers and a JVC cassette deck. It was the 'dogs bollox' at the time. A 'massive' 35 watts into 4 ohms, if I remember right.. The only thing I still use from that set-up is the Zerostat (although still have the speakers) !
  9. You forgot '100% Proof' Must have been kept by his wife (common law?). I would guess that the amazing tape archive being put out by the Savage Solweig label is also being put out as part of this 'holding'. Looking at that page with the list of tapes held we are in for a treat and a half if they continue to put this stuff out. The Vol 2 recorded in 1964 at the 'Dancing Slipper', Nottingham is really excellent. And in pretty good audio, thanks to Dancing Slipper host 'Foo' Kinnell's sound system.
  10. Obligatory . Even that battered old deck upstairs at Mole had one of them.
  11. I think the first arrangements of his I heard were the Donauschingen tracks (1956-7?) released in the 1970s together with Eddie Sauter material. Fine stuff - will have to dig that LP out.
  12. Would that be an e-bay vg+++-+ or a certified vg+++-+ ?
  13. Sad news - he 'knew his stuff'. RIP
  14. Yes - I was thinking that too. He got everywhere. Is this one of the 'Cosmic Brotherhood' recording sessions?
  15. And invariably around that time-frame it would be a radiogram with auto-changer and a knitting needle-ish stylus.
  16. This might be of interest - Tubby's old collection of his own vinyl (select the page shown on the RHS). Tubbs Vinyl Judging by the condition, looks like Tubby was using them as frisbees.
  17. First time I've seen that one too. There were a couple of Esquires in that style (the Burrell 'All Night Long' for example).
  18. Yeah - but what sort of condition was it in?
  19. Popped into one of the Fopps in London yesterday - they didn't have the Impulses. HMV Oxford St has them at £7 each or 2 for £10. Didn't pounce (bought the new Tubby Hayes Savage Solweig instead). £8 in Ray's.
  20. Good stuff - will be popping into the big London HMV tomorrow. Hopefully they are all 'up' on the shelves at that price.
