Adaptable indeed! Everything from piano duos with Bill Evans to scoring for, and playing valve trombone with, big bands. Absolutely ! To me he was the epitome of the ideal 'mainstream' musician - along with Clark Terry. The Verve albums are definitely worth checking out - 'Gloomy Sunday' and '7xWilder', which I will put on the system a bit later. Crazy that that one has never been reissued on CD !

Listening to the Mosaic Select I am reminded as to just how adaptable a musician Bob Brookmeyer was - I'm sure that he would have been able to contribute effectively in just about any context possible, from the 'trad' end to the near-free.

What sad news to log into, after a rough 250 mile car drive. Like Bev, the one time I saw Bob Brookmeyer play was at Cheltenham and I'm very glad I saw it. A true master of the valve trombone - and an excellent arranger. Loved his work with Thad & Mel and also the collaborations with Clark Terry. RIP Mr Brookmeyer,

Thanks for posting this ! I see that the big band are back in action at Newton Abbott this weekend. Hope to be able to catch it - the weekend timing will help. Venue is 'Hannah's at Seale Hayne' - totally new venue for me. Hope they get the Xmas mince pies and mulled wine out again.

That was a pretty nice program that KC hosted, with guest Abram Wilson. The musical selections were very good and anybody listening would leave it totally gob-smacked at just how brilliant a player Clifford Brown was. Still nobody has approached his level of hard bop trumpet playing, nearly 50 years after his passing. Good to hear early playing by Harold Land too. Very under-rated in that era IMO - although he got a few more plaudits later. KC for Prime Minister

I think the only Arvanitas I've got Brownie is a live 2LP set by his trio from the 1970s - on Barclay, I think. Also that session he did with Dexter Gordon and Sonny Grey (the piano on that one was about as well tuned as the one at the Five Spot !) I'll definitely look out for this 'Soul Jazz'.
