  2. Dental treatment in Canada can work out pretty expensive for major treatment - although many employers have schemes in which 90% or thereabouts of costs, up to a limit, are covered for 'permies'. My experience of using the medic and hospital system was that it was broadly similar to the UK NHS. Once you have a social insurance card/number, the system kicks in.
  3. Sad news. I was looking at the booklet in the Mosaic set only recently and when it was written at least 3 of the group were still alive. Ross Barbour contributes quite a bit to those recollections, I recall. RIP - not a good reason to bring out the set.

  5. He and the band performed at NorthSea a few years ago (2005-ish) but sadly it was a very mixed bag. I have it on DVD somewhere as part of a compilation.

  7. Far from perfect - but certainly enjoyable and a good complement to 'On The Corner'. The sound of that one was always very boxed in though.

  9. Shame that they filled in some of the steep incline below the Saxon front line with soil when the B'tard built the Abbey to atone his sins ! Still a very atmospheric spot - in particular that boggy bit on the RHS where they butchered the over-eager lot who went chasing the Bretons. Still a bit boggy to this day ! If only Harold had taken his mum's advice and held off for a day. The consequences would have been huge (probably no USA for starters..)
  10. Jymie Merritt on bass. Reputedly Morgan's common-law wife Helen Moore was in the audience for that 'Soul' filming too.
  11. That album (for Flying Dutchman) is the strangest thing Basie ever recorded (along with the James Bond album for United Artists). 'Afrique' even includes some Albert Ayler tunes !

  13. Another annoying formulaic thing they have added (especially to documentaries) are those damned high-dramatic crescendo sound effects intended to reverberate through home cinemas, which are the curse of just about everything. Curse of the age ! End of boomer rant.
  14. Seems OK - although the balance on this track is sort of weird, with Lou panned well to the left and just the drums prominent and bass in the right channel.

  16. Amazing how easy that can happen. At one time I had a recording of Lester Bowie Brass Fantasy at the Bath Fest, courtesy of the BBC - until my folks accidentally wiped over it. Sadly, I've never seen a repeat of this one and no doubt it languishes in the BBC archives (along with Loose Tubes at Bath and other such delights).
  17. Even in the 1970s I remember tuning in to a very intermittent and fading 'Voice Of America' to listen to the jazz on there. It was still more adventurous than the stuff they were putting out at the time on the BBC (honourable exception - Charles Fox). Plus - I think I've mentioned on this board before the revelation of tuning in to one of those Normandy statons on AM radio one Summer morning and hearing the whole of one side of 'Agharta' ! Don't give them ideas ! Yuck..

Great news. I still need to upload all of that Mrs Mills, Frank Chacksfield and Mantovani material onto my I-Pod.
  19. Picked it up about a year or so ago for around £40 along with a couple of other 'OOP' Selects. It was well disguised in its rack but it didn't fool me.

  21. Thanks for the recommendation, sidewinder. I've just ordered a copy from Amazon. Splendid - I'm sure that you'll both enjoy it. Ridiculous that it is so obscure !

  24. I remember reading at one time that all those 'Jazz Goes To College' were wiped to make room for 'Blankety Blank' et al so when the Getz appeared it was a bit of a shock to expectations. I wonder if they sourced it as a stray copy from one of the overseas affiliates (in the same way that 'Pete & Dud' shows sometimes misteriously reappear). I'd be delighted if more of these were found and put on BBC4. The Max Roach/Freddie Hubbard sounds fantastic - and of historical significance. I think there was at least one Tubby Hayes performance on 'Jazz Goes To College' which has never surfaced for TV viewing. Would also like (massive understatement) to see the multiple weeks of Joe Harriott/John Mayer Indo-Jazz Fusions from about 1969/70 that was reputedly broadcast only on a local slot on HTV West from Bristol - shown once (no doubt on the Sunday teatime God-slot ) and apparently long lost. Maybe there is a stray Welsh copy of it still out there.. It would be a damn travesty if they cut back on BBC4. The only decent channel left.
