  1. Yeah - I've been in the audience a few times when he came out with that Joe 'Piano' Henderson joke - one of his 'set' gags. If I remember correctly he sometimes followed it up with 'Miles will be in the Club next week' [gasps and awe from punters..] followed by the immortal 'Sir Bernard Miles'

  10. Hey thanks ! That sounds like an excellent suggestion. I'm not sure how much time I'll get if any - but maybe I can try to tag on an extra day at the end to add in some R&R flexibility. I'll see what I can do.. Sounds like vinyl paradise out there. Too bad I've only got moth-eaten £.. Art Ensemble Of Chicago on the 6th sounds good.. if I'm still in town by then. I'll pass on Allen's dead hooker in the bed though..
  11. Thanks BeBop - I can feel a vinyl buying expedition coming on..
  12. there's obviously a story there..

  14. Sonny Rollins 'Newk's Fadeaway' on Ken Clarke's BBC radio programme the other day. That track is a short masterpiece - not a wasted note !
  15. Looks like I'll possibly be in Philly on business during the first week of March. Any jazz-related event recommendations that week? Not sure how much time I will get but hope to check out some live music. Cheers !
  16. More UK Sonic Booms 'out East' today.. Noisy Hall Of Residence
  17. I usually try to listen to his show in the car when in NYC. Last time there I caught a five hour Elmo Hope special ! Anyone who can do a 5 hour Hope special can't be all bad (wish we had these in the UK ).
  18. Benny Hill Henry McGhee Hill's Angels
  19. The Dead Sea Scrolls of Modern Jazz. I have it on vinyl and don't spin it anywhere near enough. That booklet is downright brilliant, I must admit. Currently spinning Don Pullen Mosaic Select, CD1.
  20. I really like that one, Sidewinder, though I have it on CD as you might expect. Yes Bill, an extremely good session. That first track in particular is a gem !
  21. Anything else you might consider letting that one go for? The three Commodores? How about a Lionel Ritchie? :rsmile:
  22. 'Mel Lewis & Friends' (A&M Horizon). Nice session with Hank Jones, Freddie Hubbard and a young Michael Brecker.
  23. What I find annoying is that some people over there who previously weren't interested seem to think they know all about jazz as soon as they've picked up a few Hoffman-mastered Analogue Productions/Blue Note SACDs. A few also seem to think Louis Armstrong's career started in the 1950s, while for others jazz begins in that decade...
