Gig a month in 2009 - a challenge
sidewinder replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
You should try booking a train over here ! Not as many gigs so far this year but hope to catch Ben Clatworthy and his Qt. locally this weekend then Pharoah Sanders at Ronnie Scotts, London in a few weeks time. I'm trying to find an excuse to get back in to London a couple of weeks later to see Bobby Hutcherson at Ronnies.. -
Very happy birthday ! :rsmile:

I've brought it back up in today's posts Bill. It's the 'Last Record Store standing' thread (or something like that).

Thanks Bill and kh1958 - sounds like I either need to get all of the LPs or a CD set. I've got a couple of the Lps. Ha ! For some reason my turntable 45rpm has been misbehaving of late and playing at 33rpm, which has really peeved me off with Music Matters and the Tubby EP. Back to dealer !

It's a very good article - picked up a copy when it came out (I think Roger Farbey gave the heads up). The recommendations are good ones (Rendell/Carr, Henry Lowther, Harry Beckett, Mike Westbrook) and as representative list for that period as I've seen anywhere. Excellent primer - and worth reading along with Ian Carr's 'Music Outside' on Northway Books. This covers the period of late 60s/early to mid 70s. John Dankworth was mainly doing studio/film work over that period so I guess not included. His 1967 collaboration with Kenny Wheeler (Windmill Tilter) would deserve inclusion though. I'm glad to say that JD is still actively gigging over here, as is Dame Cleo. National Institutions !

Can't believe that this wasn't snapped up in a pico-second ! -
On my last visit to that basement about 5 or so years ago the old wooden racks were very recognisable from 'Honest Jon's days but the jazz selection only had a few dozen albums left and all of those were at sale prices. It was a very surreal experience as the last time I'd been in 20 years before the very same racks were full to bulging with great jazz and reggae. I came out with a nice cheap Sonny Fortune A&M LP though.

I've got that one somewhere on a UK London LP. That would be the original British issue? I bought it on Affinity in 1989 with a sleeve note by Brian Priestley. Yes Bill - It's the 50s issue. Flimsy type sleeve and red deep-groove London label.

That 4CD European 'Complete Joe Maini' box is definitely worth seeking out.

Called in at GRAMEX not far from Waterloo Station last week. The jazz is downstairs, classical on the ground floor. Not much jazz vinyl (the proprietor is a very nice chap and is keen to expand his selection) but they did have a couple of OOP Mosaic sets. I picked up the Condon Mob and if anyone is interested in the Prima/Manone, there was a copy of that one which is probably still there. It came as a shock to see the old 'Tower' aka ex-Fopp at Picadilly Circus all boarded up and vacated - a real sign of the times . The nice Fopp store on Goodge St has also been closed, by the looks of it. "Rays Jazz" though was looking OK (with 'Empirical' doing a nice live gig in the de-jazzed cafe area). The jazz section is now moved to the 2nd floor and shares space with the DVDs and classical music. Still a good choice of music there. Strangely though, in light of the above - Central London looked pretty vibrant with the West End restaurants doing good business and European tourists spending like crazy. Strange times indeed !

All that wonderful stuff! The October 28 1947 session. Yes, I'm very happy to have the Spotlight box set of the Complete Dial studio recordings. Is this the best reissue on LP of this material? Or were there other earlier issues of this material with better sound? Wouldn't know about that. Just bought the albums when they came out in the 70s. Anyone know how does the sound quality of the 1970s Spotlite LPs compare with their 4CD reissue? I'm tempted to get the CDs.. Spinning - 'Bite Hard - De Wolfe Sessions' (Barely Breaking Even Records)

I've got that one somewhere on a UK London LP. Worth a mention for Earl Anderza 'Outa Sight' here. That one was on the 'West Coast Classics' series and recommended to anyone who likes the Curtis Amy 'Katanga' as another good example of West Coast hard bop.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
sidewinder replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yeah, exactly Jazzbo Eddie hardly features on the Condon Mob set but the Condon 'vibe' is all over it and the music is very representative of stuff that I guess could be heard at Eddie Condon's NYC club in the 1950s. A great set, glad to have 'stumbled' across it. And much of it recorded at Columbia 30th St NYC studio. Heaven ! I LOVE that one! Good choice. Is that the one with the big booklet in it? :rsmile: -
Hope it's another good one ! :rsmile:
