  1. The Byrds The Hollies Buffalo Springfield Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump Buffalo Bill Samuel Franklin Cody
  2. So much for the credit crunch.
  3. On one of the other threads I mention Kirk Lightsey's recollections of the sessions. Travelled in daily from Atlantic City with Roy Brooks (they had a gig down there) and R Carpenter apparently treated Kirk & Roy OK !
  4. Early 60s Ember pressings can sound suprisingly good !
  5. I remember seeing this edition of the set for sale in sole UK stores (e.g. Fopp) so almost certain the booklet would be available in English.
  6. Onzy Matthews Select also, CD1. Nice and loud !
  7. To quote Poppa Lou, no CONNfusion here. Happy Birthday !
  8. I guess it's going to be just like 1979-84 again. A period of fabulous 'brown bag' 2LP reissues and the Rainbow Series then - nothing. Until a new generation discovers Blue Note. In the meantime, Japan keeps it going (King and Toshiba had the field to themselves back then).
  9. Doesn't suprise me. The BBC repeated a radio interview a while ago where he mentioned that on the helicopter flight over to the IOW someone in the cabin mentioned that the pilot had been given LSD. Fortunately for all, a false alarm.
  10. It would have had to have been. The only passing trade in Looe is in mackeral. I remember going on holiday there as a very small kid. The thing that was impressed on my mind is rolling into town in the car and seeing an absolutely huge (thresher) shark hung up on a gibbet at the sea-front, just landed that day ! I'm in no doubt that if there are big thresher sharks off of Cornwall there must be the occasional great white too !
  11. Have a great Birthday !
  12. I bought a lot of jazz records from Acorn Music, based in the West Country - I think it was Looe, Cornwall, but I'm not sure. Are they the shop discussed in the book? What happened to the owner - I'm talking about the 1970s/1980s. I wonder if it is a different 'Acorn'. Acorn Records are based in Yeovil, Somerset, although I think they did have a second outlet for some time (short lived) in Weymouth, Dorset. The owner of Acorn is called Chris Lowe (the other founder, Rob, sadly passed away back in 1995). Acorn have been around since about 1972. I bought my first Lps from them (Miles Davis 2LP sets) around '75-76.
  13. Just to add also that when I was in West London a few weeks ago I tried to locate that short-lived branch of Honest Jon's near Cambridge Circus. I'm fairly convinced it was on Monmouth St, on the RHS as you head up towards the 'Circus'.
  14. Scorpio pressing? How does it sound? Was eyeing up a 'Mr Shing-a-Ling' from same source this afternoon and came near to trying it out.
  15. I'm still getting over the shock of seeing the old Virgin Megastore aka Zavvi on Oxford St morphed into a temporary chav-ette clothing emporium. That place was heaving with LP and CD buyers from the 70s right through to the 00's and, especially in the early years, thay always had a good-ish stock of jazz. Truly shocking !
  16. This DVD is up for a viewing tonight. Followed by Don Eliis 'Electric Heart'.
  17. Got round to reading the book - and it is a great little read, very hard to put down once you start reading it. It works on 2 levels - both as a reminiscence of record shops and their characters up and down the land and also sort of as a business case study as to what goes wrong when the supermarkets, downloaders, pop-idol etc. start messing up the system. The section on Acorn Records I found particularly enjoyable as I have been familiar with that place since long after its inception and it is truly a miracle that it has kept going all these years. The founders were both music fans formost, which I'm sure helped a lot when times got tough. Lots of funny stories in this book. I particularly llike the one of the customer asking for a record by 'The Loneliest Monk'. Earlier today I was in 'Raves From The Grave', one of the shops featured in the book. They are apparently opening up a brand new store in Warminster, Wilts. later this month and Graham Jones, the author of the book will be giving a talk, accompanied with Xmas wine and refreshments. Would normally be totally unmissable but it looks as if I'll be in France that week.
  18. Great minds think alike ! Just spinning 'Slightly Latin', this time the UK Mercury pressing in the 'Limelight Series'. In stereo too - first time I've heard this version (great). The Limelight LP I have is in mono and I'm pretty sure that the version on the Kirk Mercury set is also mono. Lost master?
  19. Hope he doesn't see this thread.. In UK Bev is both a male and female name. e.g. Bev Bevan of ELO fame !
  20. I wish he'd get round to compiling an 'Impressed Vol 3' Rare British Jazz sampler ! :rsmile:
  21. Happy Birthday !!
  22. Thanks - I love this LP and isn't the sleeve/label concept by 'Trane for the AU4950 just about the coolest thing ever? It features, deservedly I think, in the recent 'Freedom, Rhythm & Sound' book. I've got a backup Impulse copy for 'everyday listening'
