  1. Damn - my copy of that was wiped ! Wilton Felder Buster Williams Stix Hooper
  2. Billy Gardner? Recorded on all 3 of George Braith's Blue Note albums. I believe there's been some discussion of him on the board which 'search' under 'Billy Gardner' should throw up.
  3. Acorn gets a good write up in the Graham Jones book. Awesome - I'll have to get the book. Bought my 'Bitches Brew' and 'Big Fun' LP sets there.
  4. Board member Clifford's got a good one too - Clifford Allen Blog and not forgetting King Ubu - Ubu Roi Blog
  5. Ubu - may I apologise on behalf of my compatriot A-Holes for their jerking around. Looks like I might have been let down with the Pacific Jazz Trios too. A refund is apparently on its way - although it says 'account adjustment' as if they had mistakenly charged me twice - either way, what has happened has not been clearly communicated. On the plus side, Quincy Jones has just arrived from Germany and looks like Poppa Lou's in the PO.
  6. My mother picked up Buddy Rich's 'Mercy Mercy' on Liberty in the Woolies cheap rack for 10 old shillings. My uncle (a Rich big band fanatic who had paid well over £3 for an advance order copy back in the early 70s) was understandably pig sick ! We still laugh about that one.
  7. Yeovil, Somerset had 3 places back then too - if you include the Woolies (definitely no King Crimson in that one). One of these - 'Acorn Records' - is still there and under the same management as back in '75 ! Taunton was even better. It had a place with the whole series of Blue Note Cuscuna/Lourie 2LP sets on import (long since closed). And the UK Impulse reissues. Heck, this is turning into the 'West Country Jazz LP Shop' thread. Any offerings for Shepton Mallet and Bodmin anyone?
  8. The old Virgin Records on Oxford St and Mole Jazz used to be good for a slope off for me between engineering lectures..
  9. Well, we're all talking about the past, don't forget! And none of these UK shops can compare in terms of bounty factor with the likes of the old Sam Goody's NYC Broadway, Sam the Record Man Yonge St Toronto and LA Tower Records Sunset Strip (my top 3). They have more charm though !
  10. I think this is the image you mean ( its the last one on the page ) Horace Silver at Dobells Ain't that the height of cool. They've got Tyrone Washington's LP in the window - as well as 'Serenade for a Soul Sister'
  11. Good to hear !
  12. Just the 'Record and Tape Exchange' there that I know of now. There was a snazzy new Fopp but that closed down I think.
  13. I'm a regular worshipper at that shrine... That 'Duck, Son and Pinker' in Swindon was definitely still there in the early/mid 90s because I bought a Lee Morgan 'Live at the Lighhouse' (aka Both/And) from there. Not sure if it is still in existence in the centre of town.
  14. My back issues of Jazz Journal are full of amusing adverts from Collets. I'll scan and post a few when I get time. 'From Harry Barris to Barry Harris', 'Son House to Sun Ra', that sort of thing.
  15. He still writes for "Jazzwise" I think. And the London Evening Standard.
  16. I may have an old Mole Jazz carrier bag that I can contribute to this priceless collection.
  17. Slim Whitman Slim Shady Fatboy Slim
  18. I've heard that the john in the basement was small and foul - so that may explain it !
  19. From what I gather, it's a pretty depressing scene at this time. Ray's for sure (very friendly when I phoned them earlier this week asking about Mosaic Selects ), Soul Brother for sure and I think Soul Jazz are still there in Putney. A couple of the Soho places are gone (Revolver?) and of course there is Honest Jon's in Portobello. Intoxica in Notting Hill Gate don't seem to stock jazz these days (they used to have some mega rarities - but at a price). I've got a few trips to London coming up so should be able to update this assessment. At least the old Mole Jazz building is still standing and has its original 'Mole Logo' above the door in situ. Someone stick a preservation order on it !
  20. It probably was. Monmouth St was on my route - its location was a bit further to the South on the Eastern side. Sometime in the 1980s I think (or maybe even early 90s). It was definitely still 'Collets' back in the late 70s.
  21. That makes sense. I've heard that he spent many a day flicking through the LP racks and that he originally hired the late Joe 'Habao' Texidor (who was working in NYC Sam Goody/Broadway I think, behind the cash till) to help him identify what was in them and read the sleeve notes ! That film ('Zounds' I think it's called) with John Cale has good footage of Kirk at Ronnies with Phil Seamen !
  22. Have a HMV mono of that one.
  23. Ronnie Scott Captain Scott Peter Scott
  24. Bill - brilliant. I'd be interested in a copy if you ever get one on download. Failing that, I'll see what I can arrange. Didn't realise there was so much great jazz history stuff archived there. I'll be around and about that St Pancras Reading Room next month so may pop in and have a listen.
