  1. I think I did call in once - they had no jazz so I was in and out in less than a minute !
  2. Honest Jon’s always seemed to specialise in jazz and reggae. Even back in the 70s/80s and across various London area sites. Probably reflects the interests of the founders/owners. I wasn’t even aware of these guys and checking their site they seem to have an ‘East’ and ‘West’ store. Aha, thinks I, the ‘East’ must be sited East of Yonge St to serve that region but no, they are both on Queen St West. WTF !
  3. Their site is an eye-opener. Ludicrous pricing, even for very ordinary stuff.
  4. Never been record shopping in Minneapolis/St Paul as the one time I called in was on a flight change to Cedar Rapids, Iowa (about -30C at the time, damn cold) If it is like much of the mid-West it is possibly a bit low key on the jazz vinyl side, although places like St Louis do have Euclid. That would go for that region on both the US and Canadian side, based on my experience (admittedly years ago though now). My experience of Toronto was that it was great for new CDs but that second hand vinyl stores were a bit elusive (there was a place called the ‘Vinyl Museum’ on Lakeshore that I used to pop in to). Again, that was many years ago now and I wasn’t exactly seeking out jazz vinyl.
  5. The ‘Collectors Choice’ of that Bill Potts album was a great reissue. Incredible band lineup.
  6. Yes, I have that too on a Japanese pressing. ‘Yesterday’s Thoughts’ or something like that? I prefer the other two though - need to dig them all out. The ‘green lady’s straw hat’ one is particularly nice , really captures the Walton trio well. Somewhere I have a truly ancient Philips vinyl LP of that one. Sonically, one level up from Edison cylinder .
  7. Picked up my LP copy as an Inner City deletion around 1980, from Mole Jazz I think. That and the one with the lady’s sun hat on the cover are both great. Bought ‘Salt Peanuts’ I think as I was on a Parker/bop kick at the time. Many years later I saw Med Flory, Conte Candoli, Lou Levy and Jack Nimitz in person, which recalled hearing them on this session.
  8. Picked up a near-mint copy of Vol 3 last year for about that in £, it was the only one of the 3 sets I didn’t have. Hope to crack the box open and spin a few sides this afternoon. Amazingly, the box was acquired from a physical store. All 3 volumes were already well OOP from Mosaic before I started buying from them.
  9. I bought that ‘Salt Peanuts’ album by Supersax when it came out but haven’t played it for years. UK pressing by Capitol, I think.
  10. Well..... I do. Nice contribution by Kenny Burrell too so this is a winner. Not having an original of this one, or ever likely to have an original, the TP release is a great option. Being a stereo release I guess the comparison would be against the 1966 Liberty, with the Tone Poet likely to be superior.
  11. Another very good Tone Poet.
  12. Woody Herman Bonnie Herman Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer
  13. Yes, Ruiz and Higgins. Bassist was Herbie Lewis so must have been the next European tour (Wim Wigt?), late ‘79 or early 1980. One of the most enjoyable Coleman performances I witnessed was a free open-air one, near MacArthur Park, LA. That was with Cedar Walton, David Williams and Billy Higgins and I have photos taken of it somewhere.
  14. Stavros Loadsa-Money B*ggerall-Money
  15. The new Tone Poet - I have quite a number of versions of this on LP and CD including an original and this is the best of the lot by some distance. The percussion comes across really clearly - fantastic reissue. I quite like that reverb.
  16. Tone Poet version - excellent
  17. One of the most interesting of the ‘Verve Elite’ CD series when those came out - and quite a difficult one to track down in that series back then.
  18. Titus Oats Titus Salt Titus Caesar Vespasianus
  19. Signed by the man himself. Looking forward to his forthcoming UK gigs in Ilminster and Conservative Club, Swanage . I also need to stock up on more CDs from him.

    Steve Lacy

I only saw Steve Lacy just the once, in his later years - with Betsch and Abenel - but it was memorable. Recall that he covered some Monk tunes. Also that Dr Art Davis was sat at the next table and enjoying it, the only time I ever saw him too.
  21. The Kristianstadt disk
  22. I’m glad this has been posted - I’d wanted to check out those Small’s shows but the timing is incompatible with office working hours next day in the UK. Quite a contrast with 1979 - long powerful runs and the circular breathing missing but the great lyricism and blues feel still very much there. I think the last time I saw him would have been mid-2000s in London and I have a feeling it was with Bobby Hutcherson (or maybe I am getting him confused for that one with Johnny Griffin - or maybe it was both of them with Hutch). There’s also that ‘Coleman Family’ documentary on Amazon Prime on that site at present with more from George.
  23. Kicking off with ‘Amsterdam After Dark’ - which I remember seeing him play in 1979.
