  1. Hope it's a great one !
  2. Al! Say it ain't so! To quote Dr Johnson: "A man who is tired of jazz is tired of life".
  3. I've gone for it. Figured a spare copy of this wonderful set would be nice to have, for equivalent of £15. The main objective though was to get Bill Evans - The Secret Sessions at $29.99 They also have some more copies of 'The Last Waltz' at $29.99 too. Thanks for the tip, six string
  4. Possibly a transistor stage on the way out, by the sound of it. Or possibly a duff filter.
  5. Murray Walker David Coleman Denardo Coleman
  6. Jeez - it it really 5 years since this one?
  7. My Prima/Manone set has just arrived. Copy # 1023. So far (CD1 playing) the verdict is that this one sounds damn cool..
  8. Joint the queue ! The Water CD sounds pretty good though.
  9. Doin' my morning workout with Lou today - the 'MM 10 minute plan'. Better than Jane Fonda.
  10. Hope it's a great one !
  11. Have a great birthday !
  12. 'Blue John' fetched $565
  13. My "Soul Station" is reserved and awaiting shipment with the next job lot . Apparently on the latest ones they have sorted out the sleeve adhesive problem and further improved the sound transfer (not that I was complaining with the first 4) so am awaiting with interest. Quite a few of these are new to me on vinyl ('LD+3' for example) so no duplication and it will be great to hear a good pressing of 'Soul Station' in STEREO.
  14. 'The Atlantic Years - The Art Of Freddie Hubbard' (Atlantic 2LP set)
  15. Peter Herboltzheimer 'Jazz Gala 77 - All Star Big Band' (Telefunken 2LPs). Johnny Griffin, Albert Mangelsdorff etc.
  16. You mean "Straight No Chaser" ? I have the same kind of "Hank Mobsession" these times.... : Oh jeez - of course !
  17. Bev - nothing booked as yet but there's a chance I'll be up for a day at Cheltenham. Bigger chance that I'll be there some of the time at Bath. Still recovering from Wayne Shorter !
  18. Coltrane 'Classic Quartet - Complete Impulse Studio Recordings' box, CD5. The 'Transition' and 'Living Space' material.
  19. Very true. I listened to the show pretty well every week in the late 70s/early 80s and remember hearing for the first time the likes of late-period Coltrane, Archie Shepp and Roswell Rudd. It was an especially great intro though into the earlier jazz, which didn't get much airplay on the Beeb during that period (in fact any period). Humph cast his net far and wide. Admittedly though I don't remember hearing any Anthony Braxton on that show (he left that to Charles Fox on Radio 3).
  20. Thelonious Monk 'Monk's Dream' and 'Straight, No Filter' (both Columbia 2-eye, stereo)
  21. Yeah, 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue' livened up many a drive back home after a heavy day's work. Some of his 'Samantha' comments were priceless (and very risque for 6.30pm on the Beeb).
  22. I didn't personally agree with some of the opinions regarding merits or otherwise of various sessions. 'Dippin' and 'A Caddy For Daddy' (especially) are better than pedestrian, IMO. Having said that, the book was an enjoyable read and did point me back in the direction of some lesser known Mobley sessions (including 'Curtain Call' and 'Poppin'). Strange that there's no mentionof some of the sideman dates, including Freddie Roach 'Good Move' and Grant's 'I Want To Hold Your Hand'. A bit too much repetition of facts in places too - got a bit annoying after a while. Michelle Mercer's Book about Wayne Shorter fell into this trap too.
  23. I've always thought of Humph's various groups as being the epitomy of 'mainstream', in the best sense of the word. He always had a few 'modernists' in the ranks, thinking of people like Dave Green, Mike Pyne and Kathy Stobart - not to mention Bruse Turner.
