Do you know if it's a stereo vinyl version or mono? I go caught out by the Japanese (and UK) CD reissue in mono of Tubbs' '100% Proof' so I don't want to get fooled again (as they keep singing on CSI). That is a good question ! Several of us Ross-ophiles have ordered the vinyl so if you hear the champagne corks popping in a few weeks time you'll know its the stereo. One would think (hope) that if they've gone to the trouble of putting out vinyl it must be from the original source.
  2. That one did the email rounds of my office yesterday, to much hilarity. How true !
  3. George Braith 'Extension'' (BN NY USA stereo)
  4. For once, Eriksson made the correct substitutions ( ) with the two wingers and Rooney brought on. England were hopeless in posession for the first part of the 2nd half and looked to be losing it but with half an hour to go they seemed to wake up and get things in control.

I am advised that 'Cleopatra's Needle' Japanese Reissue LP is back in stock at Dusty, if anyone is interested ..
  6. George Braith 'Soul Stream' (BN NY USA mono) Signed by George on the back ! Can't take any more of England football team..
  7. You summed up my thouhjts on the game perfectly !
  8. Reserve not even met on this Studio Basie ! Priceless Basie
  9. Not to mention endless battles with thin cardboard boxes. The Blue Note ones were particularly impervious.
  10. Larry Young Fest: 'Unity' and 'Into Somethin'' (both BN NY USA mono)
  11. Anyone else seen this DVD documentary by Brandon Evans? Interesting stuff - quite an extensive interview with Simmons talking about his career, sessions with Dolphy/Lasha etc. and also side interviews with Anthony Braxton and Junie Booth. Also some nice footage of Simmons in action on alto and english horn.
  12. A real missed chance by Switzerland - they should have scored about 3 times. They even tried doing a Maradona 'Hand of God' when a very simple header into goal would have sufficed !
  13. An awesome sounding record ! Reminder to self to get this one on deck tonight..
  14. ... and stays there! Wow - that's cheap !
  15. Listening to the King LP it sounds pretty nice but sounds as if there's a bit of top-end roll-off that is inherent in the master. Typical of Kings the background/noise level is absolutely quiet - great quality. The sleeve is also a superb facsimile of the (usually dog-eared) original. Recommended.
  16. One of the London shops had an original Transition 20 for sale a couple of years ago. I checked it out but it had quite a few scratches, no booklet and had the infamous one-label problem. Priced at £150 or thereabouts.
  17. If my memory is right, wan't this one recorded in London by Tony Hall of Tempo Records? I seem to recall it involved some skullduggery in bribing a caretaker/janitor guy to get the use of the studio for a few hours (presumably CTS Studios in Wembley). The 'recorded in Paris' story was white-wash to keep the English Musicians Union happy.
  18. Doug Watkins 'Watkins At Large' (King Japanese reissue of Transition 20)
  19. That was one of the first jazz books I ever bought - again back in the mid-1970s in English translation. J.E Behrendt really knew his stuff, for sure !
  20. Hope it's a good one !
  21. I have the King GXF LP reissue of the 'Watkins at Large' Transition. Just about to give it a spin - I wonder how it compares with the original and the Classic Records versions?
  22. I really like this one ! Got one of the very last vinyls just as it was going out of print (thanks to the kind suggestion of someone on the BNBB ).
  23. I first heard about Mosaic around the time that their Monk and Clifford Brown sets came out - but then promptly forgot about them for 15 or so years until just before the end of their vinyl era. At that time, importing such sets into the UK was a bit of a step into the unknown and few retailers stocked the Mosaic product. Since then I've been making up for lost time, trying to get the sets I missed (and especially in the LP format). Just wish I could have got those Commodores when they originally came out ! I can't say there has been a single Mosaic that I have regretted buying. I've made forays into Harlem stride piano, 50s vocal music (Froshmen etc) and New Orleans jazz, not my usual territory at all, but in each case the boxes have been truly enjoyable and ear-opening.
  24. Freddie Hubbard 'Hub Tones' (BN NY USA mono, DG side 2). An incredible copy with pristine cover !

By the way Tooter I believe that the correct numbers for the 'Cover Lover' LP are Columbia SCX6116 (stereo), SX6116 (mono). This is a Lansdowne recording.
