I shouldn't have been suprised really - was listening to all the 'negatives' about this set on the board. Seemed to be everyone had negatives about it. I like the set. I can handle the vocals and the backing charts with the trombone groups etc. are pretty nice. Its a real nice Mosaic to sample in not too big doses on Sunday mornings whilst you are doing the ironing and grooving along. Still procrastinating on the Mildred Bailey. What I've heard of the set sounds really nice but can I justify 10CDs of this stuff.? I need to enter the Lottery with Chuck..

Oh shit. This is awful news. Yet another of the great masters has passed away. What a great artist though and thankfully we can still enjoy his wonderful recordings. I'm just really glad I got to see him play several times, when at the time I thought there's no chance of ever getting to see him. Met him briefly for an autograph after one of those gigs and he was very courteous and by all accounts a nice guy. Hope he rests in peace. Back to back Jackie Mac on the hi fi today.

I'll be sad to see this one leave the catalogue. JJ was a great craftsman on the 'bone with impeccable taste - which shines through right throughout this wonderful set. Particular fave is the 'Satin Doll' session.

'Evolution' is one of my all-time favourites. Just the right balance of groove and experimentation, with T. Williams on fire. I think I have 4 vinyl copies of that !

Their site has certainly helped develop my pidgin' German. Managed to squeeze in that Comtemporary box.

And the "Contemporary Records Story" for 15. Fantastic - that one has eluded me for years (well...2). Thanks !

I think the 'Pax' material will turn a few heads. I have the rest (mainly on vinyl) apart from the Solomon Ilori and the Lou Blackburn so may sample those.

Ron S - sounds like it's a small world ! My Uncle was a really big Buddy Rich fan (saw the band on UK tours and had all of the PJ LPs) and I still recall the mega-pissed-off look on his face (priceless) when my mum pulled this LP out for his inspection and mentioned she had picked it up for 50p (or was it 10s?) in the Woolworths sale rack whereas he had paid the full £3-4 or so for it at a specialist shop (quite a bit of cash at the time). Good thing is that they still have the original, much loved LP but I found a copy of it for about £5 not too long ago to keep me happy.

Heinz Sauer and Hans Koller (both of them) come to mind..

Strangely enough just recently watched a bit of video of her being backed by the Jazz Crusaders rhythm team from one of those 'Frankly Jazz' TV shows. Must have been from around 1962.

Yes, nice album but I would agree, the tracks end far too early before the group really gets fully into the material. 'Live at Peps' and 'The Golden Flute' are more satisfying in this respect.

Another for 'Take It Away'. Definitive version of 'Diabolus' on that one. John Boise's solo trombone feature is also lovely. Also strongly recommend this one, which is one of the albums that got me into jazz in the first place. I must have spun this LP dozens of time back around 1971/72 (picked up as a bargain bin UK Liberty issue in Woolworths sale ). A gem of a 'cameo' from Art Pepper (who was on an aborted comeback trail at the time) and great arrangements by Msrs Piestrup, Reddie etc. All of Buddie's PJ CDs are worth getting IMO.
