  1. Rahsaan Roland Kirk 'Pre-Rahsaan' (Prestige 2LP). The 'Kirks Work' session. Great liner notes by Michael Cuscuna.
  2. Hah - you don't use the CAPLOCK enough to be the 'real' aric..
  3. Hm, that might explain why I'm getting a more "avant-garde" sound in my head with this one--I recently reviewed a (very good) album by David Borgo of Ibrahim tunes, which takes them a little "out". Might even have this tune on it, I'll check. That's pretty interesting that you have this impression too. I've definitely heard this tune before and I think I've even heard the track (the 'out' trumpet solo sounds familiar - sort of Eddie Galeish) but I just can't place it !
  4. Jeez - I demand my 5 Euro refund !
  5. Daniel - I have the vinyl box and the LPs come with outer sleeves which are replicas of the original LPs. There's also a very nice big booklet with additional notes and photos from the sessions. Don't recall the rice paper inserts - standard PVC as I recall (I think I have one of the second batch).
  6. Sory it's late: Track 1 - Definitely West Coast and the trumpet section in particular tells me this band is stacked with crack session players. Maynard bursting a lip in there? Lead alto sounds at first hearing to be Art Pepper but I don't think it's him. Unmistakably Ben Webster on tenor, suspect it was recorded around 1959/60. Track 2 - Violin plus latin percussion. First instinct was that this might be Svend Amundsen but Regina Carter also comes to mind. Interesting sound in the backing - reminds me of Hilton Ruiz/Gonzales Bros./Giovanni Hidalgo. Certainly sounds like Andy Gonzales on bass. Track 3 - 'Stormy Weather'. Must be Rahsaan on both tenor and either stritch/manzello. Can't place the album but suspect that it's on one of the later Warner Bros. recordings (which I don't have). Su[risingly subdued ! Track 4 - Piano trio. Familiar standard but can't place it (I know that Yusef Lateef recorded this particular tune on oboe I think). Very bluesy style - wouldn't be Horace Parlan on Steeplechase would it? Track 5 - Again, this one is very familiar but can't immediately place it. The trumpeter has to be Booker Little (awesome), the rhythmn team is definitely Wynton Kelly/Paul Chambers/Jimmy Cobb so a process of deduction leads me to Frank Stroziers album on Vee-Jay. It's in the Kelly/Chambers Mosaic box, so I should know this one (I think there are about 25 takes of this one in the box so no wonder I remember it). Fantastic stuff ! Track 6 - 'Strange Fruit'. Don't know this version. Is that Walt Dickerson on vibes? Quassimodo on bells? Like this a lot and would like to know the details. Haven't a clue re: the narrator. Track 7 - 'Manha De Carnival', very familiar tune - oh no it's 'No More Blues'. That sounds a lot like Victor Feldman on the solo vibes. Wouldn't be from his multi-instrumental feature Pacific Jazz LP would it? Track 8 - Again, sounds very familiar but just can't place it. The style has a strong hint of Abdullah Ibrahim's group to it but not sure of the lineup. Sounds like it was recorded late 80s/early 90s. Nice ! I'll try to finish off the rest this weekend. Very nice compilation Evan which I have enjoyed listening to. Thanks !
  7. No sign of the Coltrane and Montgomery sets I'm afraid but I am keeping an occasional lookout. Still need to order my Debut box too.
  8. There's always 'Lawrence Welk interprets the George Braith Songbook', of course.
  9. No problem Tooter. It looks as if you will be posting your answers before me. Really must get my act together !
  10. Yes, have a great one !
  11. Baby Face W. 'Stop and Listen' (BN NY USA mono)
  12. Sounds great !
  13. The Mosaic Select is a must if only to hear Andrew on the B-3 organ.
  14. Hey, Tjobbe - while you are in Paris can you make a quick detour over to Paris Jazz Corner for me please and pick up some vinyl?
  15. Ken Clarke's Jazz Greats Former Chancellor of the Exchecquer the Right Hon. Ken Clarke MP talks about Horace Silver with saxophonist Alan Barnes. Worth a listen. Clarke knows his stuff on the jazz front (sure I've seen him in Ronnie Scotts in the past puffing away on one of his stonkin' cigars). Some nice insights too from Alan Barnes, who has been touring with a Silver tribute group. Next - D. Rumsfeld plays Grachan Moncur III...
  16. Peter Finch Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards Jay Leno
  17. Have a great birthday Erik ! Hope Zweitausendeins have sorted things out for you.
  18. There's a TV chef over here who cooked this stuff up on TV as an appetizer. I kid you not ! Hugh Fearnley- Whatshisface? I remember this 'earth-mother' type who wanted her friends to 'share' her childbirth experience. TV Dinners? Was that the show? That's the man and I think that was the programme. He's toned down his recipes a bit since then, thankfully.
  19. There's a TV chef over here who cooked this stuff up on TV as an appetizer. I kid you not !
  20. I've got all 12 disks in their individual plastic sleevs with the bespoke snazzy artwork and track listings. Just need to put them all now in a blank black box ( ). At some stage I'll add the custom CD labels.
  21. Splendid. It is indeed worth all of the aggro ! Now you just have to download those 7 or 8 live Miles DVDs and the Buddy Rich 'Talk of the Town' DVD
  22. Still nothing in the mail so request sent by email to Sidewinder. I'll be very late with any comments. Tooter - no problem. Please email or message your address details (I think I have them somewhere but just in case..)
  23. The Dean Benedetti Book is quite a tome as well. Don't make me start regretting not getting the Mildred set. Damn !..
  24. I can only speak for the Mosaic JJ LP set but the music is fantastic, the sound is great and the booklet a gem ! Miss this one at your peril..
