  1. 'Evolution' is one of my all-time favourites. Just the right balance of groove and experimentation, with T. Williams on fire. I think I have 4 vinyl copies of that !
  2. Their site has certainly helped develop my pidgin' German. Managed to squeeze in that Comtemporary box.
  3. And the "Contemporary Records Story" for 15. Fantastic - that one has eluded me for years (well...2). Thanks !
  4. Goody ! Gone for a copy of the Coltrane set and that MJQ box is a givaway. They also have the 4CD 'Debut Story' for about 33 Eurozlots.
  5. I think the 'Pax' material will turn a few heads. I have the rest (mainly on vinyl) apart from the Solomon Ilori and the Lou Blackburn so may sample those.
  6. No Brad Meldau or Bad Plus. No Fred Jackson Blue Note either..
  7. Baby Face Willette 'Stop and Listen' (BN NY USA mono) Grant Green 'Idle Moments' (BN NY USA stereo)
  8. Stan Levey 'Grand Stan' (UK London mono). Stan Levey with Leroy Vinnegar and Sonny Clark is a great combination !
  9. Ron S - sounds like it's a small world ! My Uncle was a really big Buddy Rich fan (saw the band on UK tours and had all of the PJ LPs) and I still recall the mega-pissed-off look on his face (priceless) when my mum pulled this LP out for his inspection and mentioned she had picked it up for 50p (or was it 10s?) in the Woolworths sale rack whereas he had paid the full £3-4 or so for it at a specialist shop (quite a bit of cash at the time). Good thing is that they still have the original, much loved LP but I found a copy of it for about £5 not too long ago to keep me happy.
  10. Heinz Sauer and Hans Koller (both of them) come to mind..
  11. Strangely enough just recently watched a bit of video of her being backed by the Jazz Crusaders rhythm team from one of those 'Frankly Jazz' TV shows. Must have been from around 1962.
  12. Yes, nice album but I would agree, the tracks end far too early before the group really gets fully into the material. 'Live at Peps' and 'The Golden Flute' are more satisfying in this respect.
  13. Another for 'Take It Away'. Definitive version of 'Diabolus' on that one. John Boise's solo trombone feature is also lovely. Also strongly recommend this one, which is one of the albums that got me into jazz in the first place. I must have spun this LP dozens of time back around 1971/72 (picked up as a bargain bin UK Liberty issue in Woolworths sale ). A gem of a 'cameo' from Art Pepper (who was on an aborted comeback trail at the time) and great arrangements by Msrs Piestrup, Reddie etc. All of Buddie's PJ CDs are worth getting IMO.
  14. Ivor Biggun 'The Winkers Album (Misprint)' (Beggars Banquet) (amazing what you uncover when sorting through the records)
  15. Eddie Henderson 'Anthology' (Soul Brother Records). Anthology of some of his 70s Capitol/BN sides and signed by Eddie on the front.
  16. Billy Taylor At The London House' (HMV UK mono original)
  17. How about speeded up/reversed music clips to guess the title of a famous hit/performer?
  18. Nice to see mention of this fine album. Had never heard it but fortunate last week to pick up a pristine UK LP issue on the 'Eros' label (part of Redifussion) so no problems with crap Crown vinyl. Sound on the LP is pretty damn good, to say the least. I'm struck by just how consistently good Conte was and how untypical his style was for an LA-based player. Bits of Lee Morgan and Kenny Dorham in his style but really he was his own stylist. Still playing superbly well back in 1999 too, and with infectious enthusiasm, when I was able to catch him live over several gigs (with Bud Shank, Jack Montrose and others).
  19. 'Victor Feldman In London Vol 1'. Great sounding Jasmine reissue of rare Tempo material, some tracks with very fine Dizzy Reece.
  20. I've also got this one on CD. Good stuff, for a compilation. Also issued on vinyl too (they did a similar compilation for Grant Green). Only the vinyl version of the compilation had 6 previously unissued (at the time) cuts from the MTYNS and Boogaloo and "Dragon slayer" sessions, which made the vinyl version THE one to buy. But it's redundant now, of course. MG Funnily enough I picked up the vinyl of this one some years ago but had to return it because of a skip ( ). Since then I've picked up most of this material on the original LPs (whch sound fantastic)or 'Rare Groove LPs' so it is now redundant. Without exception, Big John's Blue Notes are amongst the most satisfying and enjoyable soul jazz LPs ever made and are essential listening. I still find the intense groove achieved with Hugh Walker on 'Understanding' absolutely astonishing.
  21. Booker Little 'The Legendary Quartet Album' (Island) Conte Candoli All Stars 'Little Band Big Jazz' (Eros UK original)
  22. I've also got this one on CD. Good stuff, for a compilation. Also issued on vinyl too (they did a similar compilation for Grant Green).
  23. Just spotted a show with Doc and Pop interviewed last week in London on this link. Lou Donaldson and Lonnie Smith Interview Interviewer is Craig Charles, that scouser guy from 'Red Dwarf'. Didn't know he was a fan !
