The one thing to watch with Andrew is his handwriting! Its bl****y awful ! He wrote a very nice dedication in my Mosaic booklet but work of art it aint ! He also signed my 'Smokestack' and 'Judgement' Conn CDs. Whilst chatting with him he mentioned that he really liked the taste of the Bath Ale that he was supping ( ) but didn't know the Bath area and wouldn't have the time to check out the sights. I thought that was a real shame, I don't think he's seen a lot of the UK.

One of the first LP sets I bought back in the 70s was an English Vogue 3LP sleeve set of Clifford Brown's Complete Paris recordings. Mind-blowingly, astonishingly wonderful. Starts off with 'Brown Skins' and doesn't look back. Still one of my very favourite vinyl releases and it cost £3.50 I think !

Fantastic - for this program. I haven't got the Mosaic set yet (incredible self-discipline required) but this will be a good taster before the guys at 'Zwei' get it in stock. -
Great stuff! He's a nice guy. I hung out briefly with him after his Bath gig a few years ago whilst he was having a beer (Bath Ales, no less). Signed the Mosaic booklet for me !

	Industrial grade?

Fingers crossed on that, hope he's OK. What a shame that we will now be seeing neither Andrew nor Sam at the Pizza Express.

Thanks, Tjobbe. Just gone for the Debut set and a bundle of those Fantasy reissues. Mabern, Billy Taylor, Bartz, Bobby Timmons, Eric Kloss. Get'm while there there.. . Too bad that the Charles Earland 'Intensity' and Byard 'Last From Lennies' are not listed though. Also noticed Pat Martino 'El Hombre' for 1.99 if anyone needs a copy. There's also a 4CD 'Good Time Jazz' compilation on these (traditional arm of Contemporary Records). That one looks interesting too. Still no sign of more Wes and Coltrane sets... -
Sonny Rollins 'Saxophone Colossus' (Prestige Bergenfield DG mono) Thanks to Allan for this gem. Just arrived and sounds great !
 -
Rahsaan Roland Kirk 'Pre-Rahsaan' (Prestige 2LP). The 'Kirks Work' session. Great liner notes by Michael Cuscuna.

Hah - you don't use the CAPLOCK enough to be the 'real' aric..

Hm, that might explain why I'm getting a more "avant-garde" sound in my head with this one--I recently reviewed a (very good) album by David Borgo of Ibrahim tunes, which takes them a little "out". Might even have this tune on it, I'll check. That's pretty interesting that you have this impression too. I've definitely heard this tune before and I think I've even heard the track (the 'out' trumpet solo sounds familiar - sort of Eddie Galeish) but I just can't place it !

Jeez - I demand my 5 Euro refund ! -
Daniel - I have the vinyl box and the LPs come with outer sleeves which are replicas of the original LPs. There's also a very nice big booklet with additional notes and photos from the sessions. Don't recall the rice paper inserts - standard PVC as I recall (I think I have one of the second batch).

Sory it's late: Track 1 - Definitely West Coast and the trumpet section in particular tells me this band is stacked with crack session players. Maynard bursting a lip in there? Lead alto sounds at first hearing to be Art Pepper but I don't think it's him. Unmistakably Ben Webster on tenor, suspect it was recorded around 1959/60. Track 2 - Violin plus latin percussion. First instinct was that this might be Svend Amundsen but Regina Carter also comes to mind. Interesting sound in the backing - reminds me of Hilton Ruiz/Gonzales Bros./Giovanni Hidalgo. Certainly sounds like Andy Gonzales on bass. Track 3 - 'Stormy Weather'. Must be Rahsaan on both tenor and either stritch/manzello. Can't place the album but suspect that it's on one of the later Warner Bros. recordings (which I don't have). Su[risingly subdued ! Track 4 - Piano trio. Familiar standard but can't place it (I know that Yusef Lateef recorded this particular tune on oboe I think). Very bluesy style - wouldn't be Horace Parlan on Steeplechase would it? Track 5 - Again, this one is very familiar but can't immediately place it. The trumpeter has to be Booker Little (awesome), the rhythmn team is definitely Wynton Kelly/Paul Chambers/Jimmy Cobb so a process of deduction leads me to Frank Stroziers album on Vee-Jay. It's in the Kelly/Chambers Mosaic box, so I should know this one (I think there are about 25 takes of this one in the box so no wonder I remember it). Fantastic stuff ! Track 6 - 'Strange Fruit'. Don't know this version. Is that Walt Dickerson on vibes? Quassimodo on bells? Like this a lot and would like to know the details. Haven't a clue re: the narrator. Track 7 - 'Manha De Carnival', very familiar tune - oh no it's 'No More Blues'. That sounds a lot like Victor Feldman on the solo vibes. Wouldn't be from his multi-instrumental feature Pacific Jazz LP would it? Track 8 - Again, sounds very familiar but just can't place it. The style has a strong hint of Abdullah Ibrahim's group to it but not sure of the lineup. Sounds like it was recorded late 80s/early 90s. Nice ! I'll try to finish off the rest this weekend. Very nice compilation Evan which I have enjoyed listening to. Thanks !

No sign of the Coltrane and Montgomery sets I'm afraid but I am keeping an occasional lookout. Still need to order my Debut box too. -

Hey, Tjobbe - while you are in Paris can you make a quick detour over to Paris Jazz Corner for me please and pick up some vinyl?
