An unsettling and shocking view of Auschwitz
porcy62 replied to king ubu's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It works for me, Porcy. MG yeah, and you can be cynical and say thus issues such as the one discussed here aren't disturbing, or you can let thing get a bit closer to you (at least you can do that in our comfortable, non-endangered, position) and allow yourself to be shocked... hence the cynical part of us would say it's a luxury of civilisation to be shocked by such things... but I hope to never turn that cynical on such important issues. It's not a matter of being cynical, I am speaking about the deep layers of your mind. Psycologically we tend to preserve ourselves and avoid any kind of pain, but our mind can transform pain in pleasure, if it's useful to survive. Consider the Stockholm's syndrome or things like that, where the victim unconsciously transform the psychological unsustenable pain in love for his executioner. It's a strategy to survive. -
I've got several monos of classical music...and I'll get a mono cartdrige soon.

An unsettling and shocking view of Auschwitz
porcy62 replied to king ubu's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That's an interesting issue. Maybe too complex for discussing here. Basically I think that our psychology works exactly like our self preservation instinct, both as victims then as executioners. Like a wolf that cut herself a leg trapped, we cut some part of our "psychological body". This has some effects on our mental health, we have to live like a crippled wolf. Obviously I am oversimplyfing here. -

Yes, but not just the US businesses - as Porcy noted, EU businesses are in it up to their necks, too. And after China? There's a pretty good string of other countries where the same scams can (and will) be tried, and work for a while. No end in sight. MG Theorically you're right, but, in the long term, the demographic weight of China, and India, mades the forecast pretty interesting, or scaring, your choice. -

As soon as the pro-Nazi side shows up, we can move it... As soon as the pro-Nazi side show up...we can execute them, period. -

Same over here. There was a big scandal some times ago about nazi/fascist criminals. Basically, since the "Enemy" bacame Communism, during the Cold War for strategical reason Italy and Germany were the front line. Western leaders decided that pursuing war criminals would had weakned the Eastern Front. So hundreds of files with names of war criminals, evidences, ecc, regarding the bloodsheds committed in Italy by german army, and italian fascists still allied with Hitler, after September the 8th layed hidden in a closet of Italian Militar Justice Office. One funny, and disturbing as well, particular: the closet was flop, the doors lean on the wall, scaring symbolic for relatives of the thousands of civilian victims, children, women and old people killed by war criminals. And yes, this shouldn't be political IMO, but sadly it is. REALPOLITIK VS JUSTICE -

Every big corporates, and small U.S. and E.U. brands too, know how the things are going in the factories in China. That's the exactly reason because they produce there. Low wages, no unions, no eviromental issues, ecc. C'mon. I'd believe in Santa Claus that in the innocence of Mattel and the others. -
But you have to play the printed side in order to avoid scratches.

As buyer I have a PayPal account, (credit card) and no problems until now with them. As seller I used Paypal with one bank account and I never had a problem. Anyway since I am not selling anything anymore, I closed the account one year ago when I was reordening my financial assetts.

No, it sounds reasonable enough. I apologize for the totally humour-free answer. This is insane.

cds you sold or traded but wished you hadn't
porcy62 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
In my college years I traded a lot of rock records with jazz records: lacking of money. More recently sold a lot of music, LPs and CDs, Mosaic, ecc, : lacking of room, now that I have more money and bigger house...well, I can't really complaing about myself. -
Yeah, no mentions on cd's scratches on this

I second that. You couldn't do the same with a son, or even with a dog, for training purpose a dog must have a name and he respond to it, but with cats you can wait for a while and observe their behavior. I mean you can even naming them Clem and Chuck if their will result extremely edgy or crusty.

crap - Miles Bitches Brew disc 1 became unplayable!!!

Yep, it happened the same to me with BB disc four. Then I bought the Mosaic LP box set. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=183-MR-LP -
How did you guys meet your significant other?
porcy62 replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Very wise words. Indeed. I would add that at 45 y/o after 3 long relationships, the last is still running with its highs and lows, one thing I've learned is that you don't have to live the end of a relationship as a failure. A relationship is the sum of two individuals, not always they go and grown in the same direction. I know that at first it's like the end of the world: you lost self-esteem, ecc, but it happened to me, after a while, often a very long while, I thought at the positive things I had and gave in my previous relationships. edit: one hint, don't look for the definitive or perfect partner. Only times will tell you if they'll turn out to be your half forever. And be sincere from the start, don't hide the aspects of your personality that you don't like yourself. -
My solution is buying used vinyl with visible scratches already on. I know that I am not responsible for them and I feel better.
-
Thanks Chuck, it's exactly what I had in mind, but I couldn't express. A part the fact that a movies is much more complex.
-
The same thing I thought the first time I listened to it, but overall, considering the whole output for BN of Morgan, now I tend to think that it's one of the weakest. I like it anyway.

Thanks, Chris. I wasn't there so I don't know. My sources are the musician's interviews I read, and I hardly recall any complaining about VG job. I didn't intend to place him on a pedestal. And I didn't intend to understimate the major role of producers, how I could, I work in the broadcasting industry. What I wanted to say is that a recording session, like shooting a movie, it's much more complex and difficult to handle then remastering existing tapes. You have to manage a lot of things, often it's a matter of luck, everything went well, from musician's mood to tape recorder machine, or something went wrong: mics failed and a cat is drunk and plays too loud or too low. So it's too easy, and as I said ungrateful, to complain about the "lack of air between instruments" after 50 years of technical progress in audio industry. Maybe Hoffman will do a better job in remastering VG tapes then VG himself, but, as Paul said, he wouldn't have any tapes w/o VG, and Lion, of course.
-
Another thing about Rudy, you may dislike his sound, but you have to worship him for his job with musicians. As every musicians knows, the "good mood" in the studio plays a big role for great performances. His remastering job may be dabatable, like Hoffman's one, at least in this forum, but Rudy's passion and respect for musician's job allowed us to enjoy such a big legacy of wonderful music, that I find ungrateful ranting at Rudy only because the piano sounds "unidimensional".
-
Ethnic offense a part, if a "A trumpet should sound like a real trumpet, a sax like a real sax. Anything else is just wasting your time.", how can you remaster electric instruments or heavily edited music like Pet Sound, Dark Side of The Moon or Sgt. Pepper's, where, supposendly, the "real sound" should be the original first pressing of vinyl, that includes mastering as well? Because AFIK recording and mastering are parts of the same process, and the output is the record in the shop. Hoffman doesn't like Rudy's mastering AND recording, but likes DuNann's job (and I agree about DuNann's greatness), but IMHO Bird should sound like real Bird, Trane like a real Trane and Sonny like a real Sonny, was Hoffman there at those times?
