  1. Has this Earl Hines album made it to CD?

Neighborhood names do change from time to time. (And I swear that the Philadelphia Inquirer changes neighborhood boundaries depending on whether they're reporting something good or something bad.) There's an interesting city government web site that lists several hundred neighborhod names: phila.gov/phils/Docs/otherinfo/placname.htm

Has anyone done a collection of birth names versus professional names? (e.g., Herman Blount = Sun Ra)

I would think so. It's not the worst neighborhood in Philly. You'd just want to use some commone sense, as would anywhere. I live one neighborhood over from Germantown, btw. And Coltrane's Philadelphia house is in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city.
  5. "We'll begin boarding with the last 200 rows..."
  6. Careful....
  7. They could fit as many as six CDs in the same size package.
  8. I paint my own.
  9. Good luck! Hope all goes well...
  10. There's such a club in San Francisco. There were the inevitable clashes between workers and their self-management, worries about expenses & benefits, etc. (I don't know if they're still in business.)
  11. Amusing novel about the subject: (I happily haven't seen the unamusing film verson.)
  12. Is there such a box to be or are you just kiddin' around? The first Mosaic Nonselect set! B-)
  13. Yes, I remember seeing Mose Allison at a small club in Austin 20 years ago and really enjoying his piano playing, but every one of his records I've heard has only brief solos. Does he play more than the one?
  14. Did you ever see it, I mean the real thing? I did ... Oh, those crazy college kids!
  15. "The woman I met at the grocery store this afternoon didn't like your tune, Curtis." "Yeah well, FUCUR!"
  16. CurFu? Curfew? Curt Fu? This name stuff is dizzying my innards! FuCur? Meet the FuCurs?
  17. What do you think of the Henderson book? I've had a chance to browse through it and it looks pretty well done....
  18. I could post more images, but I wouldn't want to be accused of beating a dead horse.
  19. The others are sideman recordings from other Musicraft records. Actually, only one of them is listed as being from a sideman session (Boyd Raeburn Orchestra). The other 21 are all listed as from Gillespie-leader sessions. (Right about now we need that cool beating-a-dead-horse emoticon from the AAJ Board.)
  20. Hey, I was able to answer "no" on at least several of the questions!
  21. Yes, this series has turned out to be a lot nicer than I initially thought. I've been listening to the Artie Shaw in the car this week and enjoying the sound quality (and the playing, of course). The bonus video on the DVDs is quite welcome. Haven't seen the Shaw video yet. The Duke Ellington material is very nice. I'll have to look out for the Fats Waller set.
  22. I've seen such numbers quoted before, but surely the number of Duke's composition can be pinned down with a bit more accuracy. Really, 1,000-3,000 seems awfully broad... Well, for one thing, there are some tunes with different names that are the same composition and some tunes that have the same name, yet are different compositions. There are also many stage tunes that hadn't been recorded...
