  1. I dig my Mo-Roc and my Let it Go and wish all of the Buddy DeFranco/Sonny Clark stuff would come available. And I'm pretty old!
  2. When Black Bart's gang comes over the back fence I may regret my choice of gifts. But I'll go down swinging
  3. I keep sticking Mosaic catalogs in my wife's bag. She must have at least 3 of 'em at the office by now. All have the Bennie Green Select hi-lited. I'm hoping she's gotten the hint.
  4. I left out Ella's Swinging Christmas...
  5. Tracks/Albums: Kenny Burrell's Argo LP, Booker Ervin's White Christmas, Tony Bennett w/ Dexter Gordon's White Christmas, Duke's Nutcracker, Duke Pearson's Blue Note, Louis' Cool Yule, Ramsey Lewis' LPs, Hawk playing Greensleeves, Dexter's Have Yourself a Merry Litttle Christmas, King Cole's Christmas Song, Guaraldi's Chuck LP, Bill Evans' SC is Comin' to Town, Jimmy Smith's We Three Kings, Jug's Christmas Song, Bobby Timmons' Winter Wonderland (Chet's too)... Obviously I could go on all night I'll stop, though. I dig Christmas music that doesn't suck.
  6. You guys are making me upgrade my emusic account.
  7. My wish list (from the "Catching up with Tom Evered" thread at All About Jazz): Connoisseur: Ike Quebec/Singles Sessions 2CD RVG: Hank Mobley: Workout/Another Workout/Dippin'/A Caddy for Daddy Freddie Hubbard: Here to Stay Lee Morgan: Cornbread/The Gigolo Thad Jones: Detroit-NY Junction/Magnificent/Vol. 3 Lou Donaldson: Alligator Bogaloo Jimmy Smith 2CD:A Date with JS/JS at the Organ (or maybe as a couple of Conns instead) Jimmy Smith and LD Stanley Turrentine: That's where it's at
  8. You'll miss the BN design- with the exception of the Selects, there's no cover art reproduced. With the BN sets, though, you get a plethora of Wolff photos, in-depth essays and notes on each session. And tons of music- the Lou Donaldson set, for instance, has 10 lps worth of material in. Divide 10 into $96 and you've got alot of bang for your buck. And the bulk of the material's oop. Buy a book full of Blue Note cover art here. And some Mosaics. As for sound, they suit my ears and low-end system just fine. The other kids disagree sometimes. But I love every set I have. With all my heart edit: the non-BN sets are pretty sweet too.
  9. And I got mine today! Exactly as Ed described. $19.78 including postage. I now have holiday listening plans... and the deal of the century. Woohoo! edit: Thanks, Clunky, for the tip off!
  10. Well they've been laboring under the notion that it's a single disc all along. Doesn't mean they're right! My fingers is still crossed...
  11. I will. The catalog # match is good news!
  12. As I said, I got my shipping notification today. It, whatever it is, went out priority mail today. I even got a shipping upgrade.
  13. It's listed at the Verve website with an off-day release date (9/20, Monday), all by its lonesome between 9/14 and 9/21. No links, no info...
  14. Well, whatever it is it shipped to me, priority mail, today. I'll know Wednesday. Then I'll decide whether or not to keep it. Stay tuned...
  15. Yeah, I know. Trying to keep it in perspective. But still... ouch! And yep, I own 'em all on CD
  16. As I posted about these items here yesterday, I'm putting this here though it's kinda off-topic. Yesterday I get this swell bunch of Blue Note LPs in the shop I work. I list them on eBay, that being my job and all. Today was my day off, and my esteemed co-worker, who's awfully good at hand cleaning an LP, takes it upon himself to spruce some up. He's never damaged a record in 5+ years of cleaning and handling. Then I get a phone call telling me there was something abrasive underneath the records during cleaning. An early if not original pressing of Blue Train is now unplayable, on each side a 1" scratch in the direction of the groove that skips. We've a Lenny Tristano black-label Atlantic that was NM and is now likewise unplayable. A copy of Royal Flush, ditto. And the two Monk BN 10"s as well as the Julius Watkins v2 have been downgraded to VG with similar but not nearly as severe scratches. Yesterday I'm thrilled at having seen the best looking copies of these I'm likely to ever see. What a craptastic difference a day makes. Tomorrow there's some more non-BN stuff going up, as well as the downgraded Monks and Watkins...
  17. My dilemma: whether to trade my RVGs toward the box or buy the box and keep the RVGs even though it's not in the budget. Either way I want the box for Landslide/Clubhouse and the interview material. And certainly the box versions of Swingin' Affair and Gettin Around are superior to the initial 80s discs. But the "session order" bugs me. Guess I could just burn the RVGs. Thanks all for the feedback.
  18. McMaster circa '96 vs RVG. Who digs which?
  19. I got really lucky yesterday and scored this one on vinyl for $36 . It's my first Goodman outside of the Carnegie concert, and 8 sides into it I'm really digging it. Can't beat the price...
  20. Anybody compared the JRVG/Conn of Easterly Winds?
  21. Thanks, everybody- I've got most of the individual CDs already, including the VMEs of Basin Street, Brown and Roach and the Sarah Vaughan. But I don't have CB's All-Stars or all of the extra Dinah Washington tracks. Nevermind that there's a host of alternate takes. I think I'll be saving this one for the estate as well.
  22. Thanks, Chuck. I can own it for $75...
  23. I've got a shot at the Brownie box, but it's old remastering. How does it sound?
  24. I've just gotten a TOCJ CD of this and now I really want to hear the material complete and unedited. Does anyone have a CD-R of the original LP they could share with me? Please?
  25. Wow, wish I'd had that pic! The show was great: no Dr. Lonnie, Just Lou playing with the Duke University Jazz Ensemble. Sometimes with the entire 22 piece band (Fried Buzzard, Dat Dere, Limehouse Blues), others with smaller configurations (Launching Pad and a sublime "Laura"). The man has not lost a single chop. Some of LD's relatives from Badin showed up too! I got an autograph and a handshake...
