New Charles Mingus Live Recordings 1973-1977 discography
Pete C replied to l p's topic in Discography
I'm pretty sure Walrath was already with Mingus summer of 1974 when he had an extended engagement at the Village Gate (Top of the Gate). I was at a bunch of the shows. They were already performing the tunes from Changes. In fact, at the time, the titles Remember Rockefeller at Attica and Free Cell Block F were being used for the opposite tunes of the way they were attributed on the albums (and which Republican Lionel Hampton retitled Just For Laughs Parts I & II!). So I believe I saw Bluiett at Carnegie Hall earlier in the year and Walrath in the summer. I suppose I could be mistaken about Walrath, but they were definitely playing Changes repertoire. Mingus had month-long gigs there in 1974 & 1975. A lot of people sat in during those gigs. That was the only time I saw Tommy Turrentine, for instance. -

Doug Hammond's singing doesn't help Moves though. -

So that was a different show than this one, which doesn't list Terry? Also, was the son Eric or Charles, Jr.? It's a testament to Sam that so many of us considered him a friend, even if our encounters were casual. I was a regular at Rivbea when I was 18-19, and it was like being a guest in Sam & Bea's home, which it was indeed. Sam was always warm and cordial, and had total integrity as an artist. I had the opportunity to chat with him about the Rivbea days at Iridium a few years back, and I was thrilled to see his reunion at Columbia with Holland and Altschul. I'm on the verge of tears, and only recently the death of Joe Lee Wilson, who I knew under similar circumstances, hit me just as hard. But Sam had an amazingly long and artistically successful career, and we're all richer for it.

He's also trying to save money. No way he'll get a mac to fit his needs for under $500, right? -

That's a great price for the service. A $350 desktop like the configuration I quoted above is quite sufficient for your needs, and will do just fine with your speed. Here's another to consider, but I think the Dell I mentioned is a pretty good deal. I don't know what the bad rap on Dell is that you mention. http://www.amazon.com/Acer-AX1470-UR30P-Desktop-Black/dp/B005J28K3S/ -

That's about 3 times standard cable speed from Time Warner. I get about 7mbps, or 7,000kbps (they claim "up to 10mkbps for my standard option). In NYC, Turbo gives downloads up to 15 mbps for an extra $5 a month, and wideband (up to 30mbps) is an extra $20. It sounds like you don't really need turbo. -

I saw Mingus with Blueitt at the concert that resulted in the Mingus at Carnegie Hall album (January, 1974). (I hadn't seen Bluiett in his previous stint with Mingus (was Bobby Jones still playing with Mingus when John Foster & Roy Brooks were in the band? I do remember Foster & Brooks (who took a saw solo)).) I think the next time I saw him was with Walrath at the Top of the Gate that summer ('74). I believe it would have been a show at Carnegie in '73 where the dreadful trumpeter Ronald Hampton appeared. IIRC, he has no solos on Moves, and if you heard him solo you'd know why. I saw him with Danny Mixon and Ricky Ford, and Mixon was not a good match for Mingus. So far I've never heard of any recordings of the Rollins concert I saw where both Mingus and Dizzy were guests (replacements for a Freddie Hubbard cancellation). Edit: Ah, yes, the Ronnie Scott's gig in 1972 had Jones along with McPherson & Faddis with Foster & Brooks. I seem to remember the show I saw had Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet--I think I saw him twice, once with Mingus, once with Monk. I can't find details online. Does anybody know anything about this?: Charles Mingus Quintet Featuring Dexter Gordon (1972, White Label) -

Harry Morgan was Henry Morgan in his earliest film appearances (that's his real name), but he changed it so he wouldn't be confused with the more famous at the time Henry Morgan. Of course, few people under a certain age remember Henry Morgan, and everybody knows Harry from M.A.S.H. reruns (but not Pete & Gladys reruns). When I was a kid we had a Mad Magazine LP that had two features for Henry Morgan: Morgan on Wagner, and Morgan on the Mikado. http://www.collectmad.com/collectibles/musicmad.htm

Nine years is an amazing life for a computer. Five is considered long. I have a new Dell laptop, and I love it, but you don't need anything as powerful as mine if you don't do heavy multitasking, like downloading multiple large files, listening to streaming music and surfing the web at the same time while a word document is also up . Any new PC will come with a minimum 2GB of RAM, or maybe 4, and if you're just surfing and using Word and Excel, you can really get by with 2GB, but the differential would be cheap enough to go with 4 anyway. I would go with the latest processor, Intel i5 (you could really get by with i3), as it's very fast. No need for more than one CD/DVD drive unless you do mass copying of discs. I think 500GB is probably the smallest drive most new PCs come with. If your other drive is really 650MB and not 650GB, it's about big enough for 12 CDs compressed to lowish bitrate MP3(that's about the same size as one CD-R)! Desktops are very cheap. For $350 you can get a Dell Inspiron 560 with i5 processor, 4GB RAM & 500GB hard drive. Other manufacturers should have similar configurations at similar prices. -

Wow, lots of new names to me. At least the inclusion of Carol Sloane convinces me I haven't entered a parallel universe. I'll have to see if any of those singers can be found on Spotify. Is Ada Moore on the Mingus Debut Rarities series? I have those from emusic.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Pete C replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I took a jazz history course with Chuck Israels at Brooklyn College in 1974, and Chuck went on about how brilliant a soloist Thad was. He was talking in terms of melodic/thematic improvisers, who he felt were superior to artists who simply blew on changes, and I think the context was Monk recordings, where he said Thad and Newk were perfect for Monk's music, and he denigrated Charlie Rouse by comparison, IIRC.
