  1. Actually, David, I think I'll be able to make one if not both Saturday sets. See you there!
  2. Ravages of time it is, then! Thanks, Chuck--regardless of this experience--I've always been curious.
  3. Aw, David--just a little more advance notice next time! I'm going to try to make one of the Saturday shows...if I do, I'll say hello after. What a lineup! Cheers!
  4. All: The title says it all. I recently purchased a couple of discs via Amazon marketplace, and I received (though not mentioned in the description) record club pressings. I don't actually care, and this is completely an angels on the head of a pin question, but for those in the know--is there any discernable difference between record club and retail CD pressings? I ask because I had both recordings in "another life," and I could swear these sound different. Fully willing to account for the ravages of time, etc. Curious if anyone knows. Thanks.
  5. I was assuming the taper started in one place and moved closer to the stage after a minute or two.
  6. Thanks for posting, Dan. I'm on the fence about hearing this--it fills me with some sadness, knowing what the "situation" was--but you're right, it is indeed Hank.
  7. Wow, Randy--thanks for sharing. Interestingly, the image on the fist page of that issue--the "Rheinlander Gardens" in NYC--was demolished to make way for P.S. 1, the Greenwich Village School at the corner of 6th Ave and West 11th Street--about 12 doors east of our previous apartment!
  8. What am I missing, with all the apparent non-love for Tom Waits?
  9. You simply start walking, and don't, for the love of god, stop walking until you're on the other side. The bikers expect this, and will avoid you; if you hesitate, you're toast.
  10. Too many: New Yorker The Baffler (Quarterly) Wax Poetics Vanity Fair :blush2: Harpers The Economist New York Time Out New York Philadelphia Esquire Cooks Illustrated The Art of Eating Think it's time to let some of these lapse!
  11. Can't imagine you'd have a problem. Shipped/drove my vinyl collection from Seattle --> Philly --> Seattle --> Philly, both times in the middle of hot summers, with nary a problem (other than the stolen box of "Jazz Vinyl - A - Coltrane (Impulse)" (yes, really. Stupid, stupid, STUPID idea to label your shit that way). Should have said, "all three times"...
  12. First Leroy: with Victor Feldman, Gerald Wilson, Teddy Edwards, Carl Perkins, and Tony Bazley.
  13. Bringing it live to White Center. That's awesome, John--nobody ever goes and plays there. Strong work keeping it real. I'd be all over it if I still lived there!
  14. Okay-disregard. Thanks! It's not. Jewel case.
  15. Missed that Basie/KC 7. Is it the digipak edition? If so, kindly add it to my stack. Thanks!
  16. PM sent re The Complete Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong (Verve) (3 CDs) $10 Mary Lou Williams -- Mary Lou's Mass (smithsonian folkways) $6 Mary Lou Williams -- Zodiac Suite (smithsonian folkways) $6
  17. Got the Virgin (Bob Ludwig) remaster in the mail two days ago from an Amazon seller--I've only had an original vinyl copy until now--and it does sound pretty terrific. I can't compare to the new remaster, but thank all of you for redirecting my attention to this record, one of my favorites.
  18. Looks like Gil Scott Heron is doing two nights, two sets/night, at the Tin Angel. I'm heading over on Sunday. Anyone else?
