Why not indeed!
-
Okay, folks. I've had this set for a while, but haven't cracked it open yet. I know, pathetic. But today's the day...so, for those of you who are Braxtonophiles or otherwise, should I just start at disc 1, or ???
-
Hmmmmm...
-
Wait, Lon--you (and Kenny, I presume) already _have_ your Winterland sets?
-
That's the way you do it!

You beat me to it! I couldn't believe it when I saw that. Check out the October dates for the Showboat (1409 Lombard--blocks from my house!). What a time!!! Check out the program..... http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/9252352_fyV...617865045_Ghfwo

How about a little history? Jazz Enthusiast Reminisces About Spectrum Anniversary by KYW's Pat Loeb We've heard a lot about the closing of the Spectrum in South Philadelphia next month, but you may not realize that Wednesday is the anniversary of its opening. The arena opened its doors on September 30, 1967. Its first show was a star-studded jazz festival. "I was 19 years old, I came up from Atlantic City to this brand new place we knew nothing about." Local jazz enthusiast Ben Johnson had never been in a venue so large when he went to the Spectrum on its first night for the Quaker City Jazz Festival: "And we saw thousands of people and great music. One of the people I remember was Richard Groove Holmes, an organist." Local jazz singer Ela Ghant remembers her near brush with Hugh Masakella: "When they called his name, he walked right by us. It was very exciting. I'd never seen anything like it." Also on the bill: Astrud Gilberto -- the girl from Ipanema -- Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Herbie Mann, Ramsey Lewis, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn. The Spectrum became more of a rock venue and that's how it's going out next month. But Johnson did think it should pass into history with a mention of that auspicious opening: "It was a fascinating time. It was actually overwhelming to me."

Thanks for that wonderful--and scary--story, Lon. I think I can safely speak for Ron, John, and J.H. Deeley when I say we would be delighted to have you come back out here for a visit--to hear music, grab some eats, bum around the city (or KoP ), etc.! Perhaps you could make a motorcycle trip out of it next spring?

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Peter Johnson replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Philadelphia Orchestra, playing Berlioz' Resurrexit and Te Deum, and Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 (the "Organ Symphony"), the latter being my most cherished and favorite orchestral work. I can't wait! -

Jim, if this is 1/4 as good as that 101 Strings/Riddle side you hipped me to a few years ago, well...

How was that? I wanted to go, but work kept me away. Are you going to Oliver Lake on Sunday @ International House? -
I still think that is a disgrace that this Fillmore set is OOP. Agreed. Hey, J.H.--I remember you complaining about digital reworking on this set some time back. Interested in a trade? If not, I know where you live...
-
Hey, this is a long shot, but WTF... I lost a box of CD's and records in my move out here, and much to my chagrin, included in that box was my Fillmore box set. Grrrrrrr Does anyone have one they don't want and would like to sell, trade for an oop Mosaic or two, or ??? PM me if so...
-
Guilty. Me too... Succumbed and put in my preorder on this box last night. Anytime I can wrap my ears around some crispy '77 is a good time. Laughed out loud as I entered the digits for my credit card which I was using for the first time since it was replaced and discovered the three digits on the back were "420"!

Many thanks for the heads-up, Larry!

Reptet Release "Agendacide" available now
Peter Johnson replied to Johnny E's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I'll just make a copy of J.H.'s download. KIDDING!!! Payment sent--can't wait to hear this. -
Well, I'm working my way through the mono remasters, and I have to say...I've certainly never heard the Beatles like THIS before! Great music; as someone said upthread, "who knew, there's BASS on these records!"; I'll be interested to pick up a couple of stereo sides, but I'm pretty happy with the purchase.

Bruce's cancer condition Update
Peter Johnson replied to BruceW's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
All my best to both of you. Paps, so glad you were able to get this detected so early. My father went through it about ten years ago, had the surgery, and there's no trace of the cancer now. There's loads of good precedent. Take care of yourself and keep us posted. -
You fegghing bastards!!! With all this discussion, the notion of the mono box intrigued me; so using Borders online in-store reservation system, I found a copy at a strip mall store in Marlborough, Mass which was on sale for $229 and is being fedexed to me as I type this. Will pick up Abbey Road and the White Album in stereo @ J&R this weekend. Psyched to dig into this!

Cool, Lon--I had no idea it ever came out on CD. I have a nineties TOCJ cd version that does not sound like a needle drop. Which doesn't mean it isn't. Just doesn't sound that way to me.

TERRIFIC album. Just scored a vinyl copy about a month ago after YEARS of looking. I wonder if the master tapes exist, or whether it will be a needle drop?
