  1. Mny, is your bday June 25 too?
  2. Danger! Danger! Blue Note Radio is opening my eyes to some new stuff, which is the last thing the ol' wallet can handle at present! Regardless. I'm really liking the cuts I've been hearing from Rodney Jones' record, "Soul Manifesto" (great title, too). Arthur Blythe and Maceo really kick the tunes up a notch, and while they veer a *little* towards the smooth for my taste, it seems like there's a hell of a lot of potential there. So I'm curious what you guys think of the full record. I'm even more curious, however, about his previous BN outing, "The Undiscovered Few" which looks, according to its writeup at allmusic (I know, one opinion) shocking in that it appears to have been, well, "undiscovered." Penny for your thoughts?
  3. Hey Bill-- Don't want to jinx anything, butttttttt.... How was the interview? Peter
  4. Good luck, my man...break a leg! The schools here sure as hell need you... I'm confident they'd be stupid to pass you up! Is it for a particular school, neighborhood, or the system in general? Peter
  5. Ah, a topic near and dear to my heart. Hook me up with a stinky ol' blue chunk of fourme d'ambert ANY DAY...
  6. Joe, any inroads from the Philly info I gave you? Peter
  7. While checking out another artist on AMG, I ran across the listing for this 1965 Pearson recording, which appears to have been reissued in 1998: I've never even heard of this. But check out the lineup: Pepper Adams - Clarinet, Saxophone, Sax (Baritone) George Coleman - Saxophone, Sax (Tenor) Johnny Coles - Trumpet Duke Pearson - Piano, Trumpet Les Spann - Flute James Spaulding - Saxophone, Sax (Alto) Bob Cranshaw - Bass Garnett Brown - Trombone Who's heard it? What do you think? Thanks for your thoughts! Peter
  8. Chris' Jazz Cafe is probably more suited to your guys' style. Zanzibar has been hijacked by the clear channel/smooth jazz types, and brings in acts such as "Tuck & Patti", "Euge Groove", "Chris Botti", and the like. But I strongly recommend you get in touch with Ortlieb's Jazz Haus where Mickey Roker, the completely SICK drummer with more than a few BN records under his belt continues to hold court with his quartet. Among others, I've heard Donald Byrd guest here within the last two years. It's a little gritty, with pretty decent food and a great vibe. It would be perfect for you guys--don't know how much they can pay, though... Generally, what sort of venues are you looking for?
  9. Not to hijack the thread, but I'd LOVE to see you guys in Philly--and I'm sure I'm not alone! Peter
  10. Greetings, all--put a copy of Oblique up on ebay. If interested, see my auction. Thanks. Peter
  11. Glad you're starting to get back in the saddle, Jim! Peter
  12. Right ON! I can't wait to dig into this record. But that line drawing...
  13. Hey Tom, Ahhh, Seattle. I miss it! I grew up in Portland, and lived in Seattle for a few years after grad school. Now Philly! Ping me offline and I'll give you whatever information you'd like to know--restaurants, recreation, you name it. pjjohnson@htts.com P.S. I know, we still need to work out the Jewel in the Lotus trade...we can figure that out while we're at it. [edited to correct my OWN email address... )
  14. I really like both of those albums. Haven't listened to them in a while--I'll have to dust them off this weekend and give them a spin. Alas, the same problem with no LP-->CDR capability here, but I'd be interested in hearing what people have to say about them. PJ
  15. As the recipient: Hank Mobley "Curtain Call"!!! As the provider: Bobby Hutcherson "Oblique"!!! (although, unfortunately, I don't have CDR capability, I'd be happy to "loan out" my copy to someone who would be running the tree).
  16. Hi all-- Just got a flyer in the mail for this upcoming show at the auditorium at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Features Avery Sharpe on bass and Aaron Scott on drums. It's at 8:00 p.m. on 5/2/03 (Friday); $20, $10 for students. Go to the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society website for details. Anyone else going? Peter
  17. Close..."lift" if used in the British english sense. Could be "Elevator to the Scaffold" or "Elevator to the Gallows."
  18. [guilty pleasure] Always loved the video for A-ha's "Take on Me" [/guilty pleasure]
  19. CJ, you might be referring to Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, which does have (intentional) splices that were equally noticable on the LP and were actually discussed in the liner notes to the 20-bit reissue....
  20. COMPLETELY dig I wanna get funky. But in that King sub-genre, it's definitely in second place (in my book) to "The Pinch," which was sadly reissued as "The Blues Don't Change." Awesome, awesome greasy horn, and hilarious to boot. "She was one baaaaad motor-scooter." Have you heard it? And the cover! How could they replace this: with this when they reissued the damn thing?
  21. Oh no, Jeff--looks like we've got a musical difference! I actually like Places and Spaces. But I have to admit, I'm not sure whether I like it in a "rare groove" sense, or in a "jazz" sense, if that makes sense. I can appreciate it for what it is (although I hate the song "Dominoes"). Still, despite the synth stuff, I thought you might like some of the 70's ensemble horn work, since you're a fan of Albert King's Stax records. I ought to listen to Places and Spaces and see exactly what I like about it.
  22. John Tapscott said, "I don't have the Mingus on CD, but I think I have it on vinyl. I'll check tonight." I know what you mean. I've got to listen to Mingus x 5 on my SACD version, rather than the CD reissue. Damn, it's not April 1 anymore.
  23. Agree. Let's not have a lot of debate over it. Person picking nominates the next to pick. Period. Of course, threads like this one are great to get ideas...I chose CJ after he said (in another thread) that Lee Morgan L@LH would be a great album of the week. "So do I," I thought, and he got the nod. Of course, he might surprise us and pick "A New Perspective!"
  24. Here's the article. It's heavy towards the end , but a must-read, and completely fascinating.
