Gary, I know exactly what you mean re "A New Perspective." I'll never forget my first listen..."Buh dot duh daaaah...dah dah dot". What the ?!@# I kind of got over it, but I'm still kind of lukewarm to the session. "I'm Still Trying to Get Home" was a weak follow-up, IMHO...

That's funny, I didn't know this had become the politics forum.

Album of the week: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing

Sorry, I'm an employee of the department of redundancy department. -
Album of the week: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing
Peter Johnson replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
John S: As I understand it, the person who picked the first album nominated Africa Brass to pick the next album and the next person. Africa picked All-Seeing Eye for the album, and me to choose next week's album. I've prematurely chosen CJ to pick the album for the week after next, but I haven't made my album choice public yet! Then CJ will choose...and on it goes. Don't think a moderator per se is necessary.... -
So that's what happens out on the farm???

By the way...what the hell...who/what is the cat?

Damn, Africa, I your cat avatar continually freaked me out (though I loved the taj mahal version), but your current one is cold terrifying!

Album of the week: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing
Peter Johnson replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
Well, I haven't picked an album for the week of April 6-12 (although I'm close!), and even more of a mea culpa, I haven't even posted a review of All-Seeing Eye. But! I was perusing another thread, in with CJ Shearns said, "Maybe [Lee Morgan, "Live at the Lighthouse"] should be the album of the week next week." All right, CJ--you're on--you pick for the week of April 13-19! -
Love this set. LOVE THIS SET! I would buy the "complete" version in a minute, if it were made available. For some reason, this is one of the few live sets I have that actually makes me feel like I'm there--particularly if I'm listening to it on headphones (with a martini in my hand???). Love the idea of one of these discs for AOW, CJ, but it's going to be something a little bit different next week ...but I hereby nominate you (this is a bit early, but still) to select the album of the week for next week. I'll post this in the recommendations forum as well. Peter P.S. Mine was packed label-side up (Black and Silver, as well)

Albert King - "The Pinch" (sadly, retitled as "The Blues Don't Change" ) Albert King - "Let me Play for You" Wayne Shorter - "The All-Seeing Eye" Isaac Hayes - "Black Moses" And a few others in preparation for choosing week after next's Album of the Week!!!

Edmund S. Morgan, "Benjamin Franklin"--it's a very well written short biography that tends to focus on his political activities. Indispensable for me to get a picture of the man who contributed a hell of a lot to my (newly-adopted) city and the world...it's got me curious about the "scholarly" treatments. Does anyone have any recommendations for a "definitive" Benjamin Franklin bio?

Oh, if only I could take back the fact that I read them!!! I do agree, this gets very complex with each additional listen...Africa, if you haven't listened to this on good headphones yet, DO IT!

Album of the week: Donald Byrd - Byrd in Hand
Peter Johnson replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
Right on! I'll have to give that some good thought. The pressure! -
Man, Jim--did I thank you??? If not, a thousand apologies! Thanks! The Maupin is completely wild. Not what I was expecting, given when it was recorded...but out there! I really like the melodic interplay...and the entire record is sort of trance-like, which I enjoyed immensely. To analogize to Grant Green, I guess I was expecting "Alive," but came away with "Am I Blue" (can't think of any better comparison!) I really dig it. Thanks again.

Where did you post that? It's awesome...I'm dying to see the fallout...I mean feedback... ROTFLMAO!

Sonic Boom--Lee Morgan Then, probably Mothership Connection--Parliament (you gots to wear your sunglasses!)

I think this is a great idea. Count me in!

What a great thread!

I can't stop listening to the Grand Unification Theory (Stefon Harris), despite my disdain for the liner notes This is one of the first recent jazz records to captivate me to this degree. I really enjoy it.
-
Ahhhhhh....I get it! Thanks, jazzhound--that was a great description.

I'm not sure I get it. Not unlike the 45rpm playback copies, doesn't all analogue recording media (warning: rash generalization follows) provide better sound the "faster" such media is played back? Faster inches per second, etc.? I'm definitely not a recording engineer (probably, by now, obviously) but the "half-speed" seems like it would translate to worse sound, not better. Probably not, since it's marketed, but can someone complete the missing link for me? Thanks!

Well--although I think you will like at least the first track on vol. 1 of Golden Circle, and I know you already like Dolphy, why don't you give Dolphy's "Out There" a spin? Relatively, I think it can be pretty straight, but it's a great record. Dolphy live at the Five Spot is also nice, with some great trumpet work by Booker Little.
-
Hopefully it's not too obvious a suggestion, but Ornette's Live at the Golden Circle (volume 1) got me started.

testing the "add a new poll" function...

Depends on what you mean by the word "number." -
I wish I hadn't read the liner notes. Dude, get OVER yourself! That being said, I am really getting into this album. I agree. In fact, there are eerie Gil Evans Birth of the Cool (I know, not really BN, but reissued on BN!) references, particularly in the first track. I might expand the above quote to state that he's making a record that sounds very mid-sixties ensemble-ish. Many Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus moments, and a lot of sounds that could have come from Impulse's "New Wave in Jazz" jag. I also agree that I don't quite see how all the pieces fit together into his "story" (when he tells me what he thinks I should be hearing, he either lacks confidence in his work's ability to tell the story he wants it to, or he doth protesteth too much). I give the record: two thumbs up. I give the liner notes: the finger!
