  1. Oh no, Jeff--looks like we've got a musical difference! I actually like Places and Spaces. But I have to admit, I'm not sure whether I like it in a "rare groove" sense, or in a "jazz" sense, if that makes sense. I can appreciate it for what it is (although I hate the song "Dominoes"). Still, despite the synth stuff, I thought you might like some of the 70's ensemble horn work, since you're a fan of Albert King's Stax records. I ought to listen to Places and Spaces and see exactly what I like about it.
  2. John Tapscott said, "I don't have the Mingus on CD, but I think I have it on vinyl. I'll check tonight." I know what you mean. I've got to listen to Mingus x 5 on my SACD version, rather than the CD reissue. Damn, it's not April 1 anymore.
  3. Agree. Let's not have a lot of debate over it. Person picking nominates the next to pick. Period. Of course, threads like this one are great to get ideas...I chose CJ after he said (in another thread) that Lee Morgan L@LH would be a great album of the week. "So do I," I thought, and he got the nod. Of course, he might surprise us and pick "A New Perspective!"
  4. Here's the article. It's heavy towards the end , but a must-read, and completely fascinating.
  5. Glad you like it! I'm hoping some folks with expansive Mingus knowledge will do some comparisons with his earlier versions of the songs on this record. If memory serves me correctly, the entire thing was performed largely without so much as a lead sheet--maybe a few chord structures, but usually with Mingus shouting the directions and changes from his bass. There are some SICK, unscripted moments on this record.
  6. Greetings! As discussed previously, this is the continuation of our thread series naming albums of the week for everyone to listen to with a critical (or merely pleasured) ear. For the week of April 6-April 12, I nominate Charles Mingus' ambitious, large-ensemble work on Impulse! from 1963: Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus (click to buy), which has been reissued and is in print! Highlights (your mileage may, of course, vary) include: - In/out solos by Eric Dolphy; - Screaming noir saxophone by Charlie Mariano; and - New versions of Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul (from Mingus Ah Um, and probably earlier versions) and Haitian Fight Song (retitled "II B.S.") (from The Clown, and also probably earlier versions) I hope you all post reviews describing whatever this record does for you (positive or negative, everything or nothing), and that a renewed listen makes you dance, sing, grab a glass of wine...well, you get my drift. I'll try to post my review Sunday evening. Part of the deal is that I nominate the person who chooses next week's AOW--that person is CJ Shearns. Enjoy! _______________ Past Albums of the Week Donald Byrd - "Byrd in Hand" Wayne Shorter - "The All-Seeing Eye"
  7. shit...I thought I just created my post in a new thread, but I CAN'T FIND IT! Maybe it takes a minute to show up...
  8. Brownie, do you have the set mentioned at the link above? How is it? I'd love to pick this up... Thanks for your thoughts. PJ
  9. Okay Africa, you're the sort of "overseer" of this project...shall I make the selection known? Is Thursday too early? Thanks! PJ
  10. Is it possible that people think they're buying loc'd after dark? That mixup would produce a reaction much different than mine!
  11. Gary, I know exactly what you mean re "A New Perspective." I'll never forget my first listen..."Buh dot duh daaaah...dah dah dot". What the ?!@# I kind of got over it, but I'm still kind of lukewarm to the session. "I'm Still Trying to Get Home" was a weak follow-up, IMHO...
  12. That's funny, I didn't know this had become the politics forum.
  13. Sorry, I'm an employee of the department of redundancy department.
  14. John S: As I understand it, the person who picked the first album nominated Africa Brass to pick the next album and the next person. Africa picked All-Seeing Eye for the album, and me to choose next week's album. I've prematurely chosen CJ to pick the album for the week after next, but I haven't made my album choice public yet! Then CJ will choose...and on it goes. Don't think a moderator per se is necessary....
  15. By the way...what the hell...who/what is the cat?
  16. Damn, Africa, I your cat avatar continually freaked me out (though I loved the taj mahal version), but your current one is cold terrifying!
  17. Well, I haven't picked an album for the week of April 6-12 (although I'm close!), and even more of a mea culpa, I haven't even posted a review of All-Seeing Eye. But! I was perusing another thread, in with CJ Shearns said, "Maybe [Lee Morgan, "Live at the Lighthouse"] should be the album of the week next week." All right, CJ--you're on--you pick for the week of April 13-19!
  18. Love this set. LOVE THIS SET! I would buy the "complete" version in a minute, if it were made available. For some reason, this is one of the few live sets I have that actually makes me feel like I'm there--particularly if I'm listening to it on headphones (with a martini in my hand???). Love the idea of one of these discs for AOW, CJ, but it's going to be something a little bit different next week ...but I hereby nominate you (this is a bit early, but still) to select the album of the week for next week. I'll post this in the recommendations forum as well. Peter P.S. Mine was packed label-side up (Black and Silver, as well)
  19. Albert King - "The Pinch" (sadly, retitled as "The Blues Don't Change" ) Albert King - "Let me Play for You" Wayne Shorter - "The All-Seeing Eye" Isaac Hayes - "Black Moses" And a few others in preparation for choosing week after next's Album of the Week!!!
  20. Edmund S. Morgan, "Benjamin Franklin"--it's a very well written short biography that tends to focus on his political activities. Indispensable for me to get a picture of the man who contributed a hell of a lot to my (newly-adopted) city and the world...it's got me curious about the "scholarly" treatments. Does anyone have any recommendations for a "definitive" Benjamin Franklin bio?
  21. Oh, if only I could take back the fact that I read them!!! I do agree, this gets very complex with each additional listen...Africa, if you haven't listened to this on good headphones yet, DO IT!
  22. Right on! I'll have to give that some good thought. The pressure!
