  1. It probably just got Forded.
  2. Tony, High-range hearing loss is a nearly universal experience as you age. It's pretty normal for your audiogram to have a downward slope to it, even in your 20s. The slope typically gets more pronounced with age. BTW, this is why music sounds better loud. It brings all the frequencies to within one's hearing range.
  3. Damnit, and I really wanted to ask a question about the three asteriks ellipsis rule - it's relevant to a paper I'm writing. Oh well.
  4. Back when I was researching equipment, I read a couple reviews where they opined that reissues of old analog recordings sounded bad on NAIM players, and I have to admit that this led me to not making a serious effort to locate a dealer where I could audition one. But, to me, this is like arguing over the best 1er cru Burgundy. Everyone's tastes and ears are a little different. BTW, that is an interesting aspect to audio - the frequency dependences of our hearing thresholds are all different, so the same piece of equipment *literally* sounds different to all of us; so these discussions are complicated by both taste AND physiology. Certainly something to consider before taking absolutist stances on this stuff (not that I am accusing anyone in this thread of doing so - I'm just a babbling drunk).
  5. I'm interested to hear about this one. How much of it does *not* duplicate the giant Mingus Debut box? I hesitated to get it because I wasn't sure there was much that I didn't already have on that one. How is the Mingus Debut box, for that matter? I think that is the only major hole in my Mingus collection.
  6. I should check back tomorrow to see if there's a Chico Hamilton set for me.
  7. I'll come clean and admit that I have a cdr burn of this set. It went OOP when I was a barely-getting-by grad student, and an unnamed poster supplied me with a copy. I *really* love this set. I mean love, love, love. It's funny, because I'm usually most into heavier stuff, but for some reason this one really clicks with me. If anyone decides that their set could use a new home, please keep me in mind. I don't want to go the ebay route because you never know what you're getting and I simply don't have time to watch the auctions. Thanks.
  8. Today I received all the rest of my items except for the Miles Davis Blackhawk set. Interestingly, "My Order History" shows that this set shipped, but that another disc *which I did receive* is on backorder. That disc happens to be the one listed directly above the Blackhawk box in the order. I smell a f-up coming.
  9. I just found a copy of Odyssey of Iska laying in a New York Press newspaper box in midtown Manhattan.
  10. I'm near-field by necessity. These damn Manhattan living rooms are small!
  11. Mr. Autrey is back in the news: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/05/nyregion...amp;oref=slogin I'm posting the link instead of copying the story so that you don't miss out on the cute picture of his daughters.
  12. Miles Davis Cellar Door Disc 1 - just got it home.
  13. Last year I was the grand prize winner in a Time Out contest. I won an iPod and what were evidently the five crappiest promo cds the magazine had laying around. Overall, no complaints, though.
  14. I received 18 of my 25 items today. Interestingly, the YourMusic site indicates that nothing has shipped yet. The shipping of the partial order was pretty fast (I did opt for express shipping), but the stale shipping data on the website don't exactly inspire confidence.
  15. It may be the first time they used "selected" in the title, but not all of the "big" mosaic boxes in the past have been complete. The Classic Capitol Sessions and Condon Mob are examples.
  16. Chico Hamilton Complete Pacific Jazz Sessions Whoops, wrong thread...
  17. Yes, I should have added that those hedge fund managers often get 8 figure bonuses even when they underperform the market.
  18. I've listened to the first two discs of the Capitol set. So far, I am not regretting the purchase (though even if I had hated it, it would presumably come in handy for trading purposes later on). It is a pretty weird set, in that even on the first two discs there is a wealth of styles. I pretty much hate the vocal tracks (except for the one with Billy Holiday on disc 1), but the rest is at minimum interesting and often very entertaining. So far, it does not strike me as essential, but certainly a worth purchase. Of course, I still have ten discs to go...
  19. These execs aren't even getting the biggest bonuses on Wall Street. A few years ago I heard reliable rumors that a trader at a major i-bank received an $80 million bonus. Also, nine figure bonuses are not unheard of for elite hedge fund managers.
  20. I didn't know he made The Limey. That is a very entertaining movie. I've never heard of Out of Sight. Somehow I only associate him with Syrianna and Traffic, which I thought were both pretty bad films.
  21. The Blackburn plays fine in my NAD player, but Curtis/Live! does not.
  22. Both sets just arrived at my office. I am unfamiliar with most of the music, but the Capitol Box has a beautiful book. I'll start digging into these tonight.
  23. I can see that. It was things like the girl going from being a senator's daughter to a crack whore in such a short time span that made the film rather ridiculous to me. I was also put off by the ending - it had this "but the good war will go on" vibe that I wasn't down with. Syrianna was another film I disliked - I think this director and I just don't see eye to eye about much of anything. Though I haven't seen it in about 10 years, I do remember thinking Sex Lies and Videotape was a very good film, though.
  24. They should offer a Nobel prize for things that make you say "DAMN!" and give this guy the first one.
  25. I'm doing the pre-order on the assumption that they got the pricing wrong. $36 for six discs in that kind of packaging? I'm laying odds it's a mistake. It's possible that Amazon hasn't yet realized that season 2 is split into two boxes - they are advertising it as all one box, but it is split into two parts in other countries. If this is the case, we'll likely just get an apology email.
