  1. But if the Brubeck family has gotten the masters, they could easily reissue these live dates now. Although I was under the impression that there were a couple of Brubeck LPs that Brubeck himself refused to allow to be reissued.
  2. DO NOT MICROWAVE THEM. THEY ARE METAL FOIL. THEY COULD IGNITE. Just trying to prevent someone from burning down their house...
  3. One of the better sounding RVGs for sure. Do you have the 2 CD "complete" version or the single CD?
  4. I always thought the microphone used to record "Turkish Women at the Bath" was actually IN a bath(room).
  5. Clifford Brown tunes are still many years away from public domain. I think there's another 30 years left.
  6. Does your car have the option to play music from a USB port? My current car and the 3 I had before this one all did. If your car has that option, just buy a cheap USB memory stick/thumbdrive and copy the .wma or .mp3 files onto that stick directly. No more burning required. Again, I've rarely burned audio CDs from .mp3 files, so I don't know how the conversion is happening, but my guess is that whatever you are using to burn them now is not the same program you used to use. What program are you using to burn your CD-Rs? If you are using Windows Media Player, that might be restricting you to .wma files. If you can, try another burning tool and see if you can mix & match them again.
  7. I picked up the recent box set of The Complete Cuban Jam Sessions (Craft Recordings) on 5 CDs. It comes with a thick booklet. This box set is very nicely mastered - great sound. There's a small blemish on the back of the box where the wrapper stuck to it but otherwise it's what you'd expect from a box played twice. We discussed this release here: $38.00 including US shipping. International shipping will be at actual cost. Payment by PayPal.
  8. You should consider setting up a DVD-A/SACD surround system then. I have heard some incredible surround music with my system... most of it rock discs, but there are a few jazz & fusion discs that sound pretty good. "Incredible" would be Bob Belden's "Black Dahlia" surround mix on the Blue Note SACD. As you noted earlier, near the end of his life, Bob was using surround sound as a better way to present his music. This music likely represents our only chance to hear it in a jazz context (I have some new-agey surround music that he did later) and it is very nicely done. Adding this... Belden also did a surround mix on "Mysterious Shorter" with Nicholas Peyton, Sam Yehel, John Hart & Billy Drummond, but I don't think he had as much artistic input into the mix as it was done for Chesky Records and they had their own ideas there.
  9. I've passed over many quad LPs in the used racks because I thought I needed a special turntable to play them. I guess I'll have to look at them more closely the next time I find one in the bins.
  10. How are you hearing it if you don't have a quadrophonic playback system? I thought you needed a special turntable to play those LPs?
  11. Can I ask what problems you are having with mp3? I have used VBR Q0 mp3 encoding for decades now and I have never had any problems, either with encoding (ripping) or playback. And maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are saying, but you should not burn any audio CD from either mp3 files or wma files unless that is your only option. You should use wav files, which is uncompressed audio from your CD or the original CD itself. Truth be told, I don't think there is any benefit switching from mp3 to wma for burning audio CDs. Both types of files would have to be uncompressed. One last thing... if you burn mp3 files to a CD-R as mp3 files, most CD players these days will uncompress that during playback and play that music fine. No need to uncompress it to burn it as an audio CD.
  12. My work is very strict on enforcing social distancing and mandatory mask wearing. I even have a proximity sensor that I have to wear that vibrates and beeps if I get too close to someone for more than 10 seconds. It automatically logs these as "close contact" in case someone is diagnosed. I have one employee that refuses to wear his proximity sensor (they are optional) and often tries to take off his mask when he comes into my office to talk to me about something, claiming he can't breathe with it on. I tell him to put it back on over & over. It's driving me nuts. Unless my work lets me discipline him (and so far, they won't), there's not much I can do other than kicking him out of my personal space when he tries this.
  13. Not that I mind that it got issued this way, but does anyone know the story of why this isn't being released as part of a box set on Columbia? Did Brubeck get back the rights to his masters? I hadn't heard that if he did.
  14. She's wondering, "Why are all my records warped"?
  15. If you use Firefox, just download the Add-on called Video Download Helper: https://addons.mozilla.org/.../addon/video-downloadhelper/ Once you install that, when you go to the page with this music, just click the Video Download Helper icon. It'll be at the top right of the screen and it'll be 3 little balls colored red, yellow & blue (they are gray if there is no download content). Click that and it'll show you the file you want (Miles Davis Sextet Acetate - Clyp.mp3) and on the next screen, click "Use browser". It shoould get downloaded to your download folder.
  16. I saw him in Gravity, which was all tuba. Being a huge fan of the baritone sax, I often wished he would come to Boston with it, but alas, it was not to be. And I do love the color Howard's tuba gave Mobley's "A Slice of the Top".
  17. Howard Johnson's partner Nancy Olewine just announced on Facebook that he died after a long illness. https://www.facebook.com/HowardJohnsonTuba/posts/3584798164908759 I only got to see and hear Howard once but he really played his ass off. Truly an original when it comes to tuba Jazz.
  18. Baritone? Really... I only have Stitt on baritone on those live Roost recordings. I'll have to try and pick this up if it's got Stitt on bari.
  19. Does Stitt play with a Varitone attachment on all tracks? I really don't like the sound of the Varitone, which is why I never picked this up.
  20. I am buying many of these Tone Poet LPs specifically because I feel like playing records again. In direct comparison, I have found that the CDs sound fine and if that was all I had, it would be enough. The normal hassles of vinyl are still there, so I don't recommend these records to anyone who is anal about that stuff. If you buy a record and feel the need to return it for any slight pressing defect, you should probably stick with the CD. As I've mentioned before, my hearing is not what is was, so I don't want to talk in absolutes but if I had to choose only one version, it would be the CD, but that is because of convenience, rather than 100% about sound. I only have 1 turntable and it is not in my car or on my back deck.
  21. I don't believe they've pressed these Music Matters 45 rpm LPs for many years so any of them that they are selling now are from their stock.
  22. Two things happened to end the Music Matters Jazz reissue program. One was the retirement of Ron Rombach. The second was Blue Note hiring Joe Harley and Kevin Gray to continue these reissues for them. Thus began the Tone Poet series. Truth be told, I am very glad that they did this and did not continue with Music Matters. Music Matters releases were limited. Tone Poet releases are not. Music Matters releases started out at $34.95/each and were $39.95/each by end and they didn't offer free shipping unless you bought more 4 or more LPs. Blue Note Tone Poets can be found for under $30 here in the US and many vendors offer free shipping. Music Matters stopped using distributors after the first few releases which made them the store where you could buy them. Tone Poets are everywhere. And one of the worst things about the Music Matters LPs was that as they started to sell out, they raised the prices. No major label does that.
  23. I've heard these and the sound would not make you think they look this interesting. These too...
