I'm sorry if Joe approved this or if it was some sort of "artistic" cover, but this is really a lousy picture. He is scrunching up his face as he looks toward the sun and squints at the camera as someone from the side snaps this. Not working for me.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Next up - Frank Kimbrough... damn... the late Frank Kimbrough - Meantime (Newvelle). Frank Kimbrough on piano, Andrew Zimmerman on tenor saxophone, Riley Mulherkar on trumpet, Chris Van Voorst Van Beest on bass, and R.J. Miller on drums. I am liking this one a lot. The tenor player, Andy Zimmerman, is a new name for me. I've actually ordered Zimmerman's Newvelle LP as well, "Half Light", which has the stellar band of Zimmerman, Dave Douglas, Kevin Hays and Matt Penman on bass. -

Kenny Werner - Church On Mars (Newvelle). Kenny Werner on piano, Fender Rhodes, and Hammond B3 Organ, David Liebman on tenor and soprano saxophones and flute, James Genus on bass, Terri Lynn Carrington on drums, and Vivienne Aerts on vocals on "Embraceable You." A very well done record. Liebman's random squeals aren't my favorite solo device - they never have been - but the music shines through. It's a shame that it is so damn expensive though. -
I have heard several of Fedchock's Reservoir CDs and they've all been very well done. I never heard this one though. I see that his 2020 release, "into the shadows" (Summit), was rated 4 stars by Brian Morton in Dowbeat. I may have to pick that one up.

So the "original master tape" is a needle drop? Doesn't that imply that the "original" master tape is in fact lost?

Great sound samples in there. He had quite the unique tone. In Bill Easley's remembrance, it looks like 1970 is written with an 'O' and not a zero. Also, in his bio, why are there some random dots? Percy France ... became a regular in those legendary uptown haunts, often jamming but frequently gigging. ... (At Minton’s Playhouse, Percy) really got ... Percy France stayed for several years, including tours, some con

Say Happy Birthday to Randissimo!

Happy belated 70th birthday to Randy. He still posts on Facebook, but not here. -
Nope. I'm done pre-ordering these LPs. I'll wait until I hear that they didn't screw up another one before they get any more of my money. They clearly have no intention of ever fixing their screw-ups and that doesn't work for me.

My good friend Frank worked at One Way Records for several years. They were a legit reissue label when he was there. Michael Cuscuna once told me that someone at Blue Note screwed up when they licensed Wayne Shorter's "Moto Grosso Feio" to One Way. I think they even tried to pull that back.

I am asking a serious question here... Does anyone know how the publishing rights work with these live streams? I ask because I knew a guy who got into trouble because he had the audacity to play music over his bar's speaker system without making arrangements with the publishing arm of the music industry. They literally came knocking on his door with their hand out.

I miss those old stores. Tweeter Etc, Fred Locke Stereo, Spearit Sound & even Lechmere, which was more of a large department store with a huge stereo department. I too bought an Onkyo receiver from Crazy Eddie when he was selling via the Stereo Review classifieds section as "Stereo Exchange". I remember having to wire the money to them. That was a scary thing for a teenager. The only reason I even did it was that I figured Stereo Review wouldn't list their classified ad if they weren't legit. How naive I was...

Terrible series name and lousy covers but often great music. I avoided many of these because of those cheesy covers and a few odd LP combinations. I'm regretting that now.

This is what the Beatles thought about Capitol chopping up their albums for release in the US:

Covid Vaccination Poll Update
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The state of Maine is going to have a lottery. Everyone who gets vaccinated can enter. For however many people get vaccinated by July 4th, they are giving away that amount to one lucky vaccinated resident. It's up to almost $900,000 now. -
The Drummonds (Renee Rosnes, Ray Drummond & Billy Drummond) - A Beautiful Friendship (Videoarts Music). Nice piano date for Rosnes, who, as far as I know, never went by Renee Drummond when she was married to Billy.

Michael Cuscuna didn't tell me who, just that it was a "British audiophile label".
-
I have been told that Andrew Hill's "Passing Ships" was re-mixed to analog stereo by Malcolm Addey for release on an audiophile label in the UK. I guess the honchos at Blue Note heard the tape and decided to release it themselves. They did compensate the label who initially paid for the work but still... sounds pretty sleazy to me.

When my oldest daughter was 6 or 7, I had switched over to laser discs for her Disney movie watching because the VHS tapes wore out too fast. One day, she had a friend over and they decided to play hopscotch. They decided that those pretty Disney laser disc movie covers were the perfect size. Luckily, they only broke two. -

Julian Lage - Squint (Blue Note). I pre-ordered the Gray/Blue splatter LP just because it looked cool. It turns out they had Kevin Gray cut this and I've liked a lot of the Tone Poets he cut. It does sound very nice. Music is... different from what I expected. I've seen Lage play live a few times and this is less like that. He touches on many musical styles here. There's some country, some blues and some rock-lite tunes. -
Liner notes to "Harold Land, Westward Bound!"
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
As I said, I have not read "Raise Up Off Me". My earlier comment was based on a conversation I once had in a record store where one of the participants said that after reading it, they thought a lot less of Hawes than they did before they read that book. I gathered it didn't paint a pretty picture of Hawes. -
