  1. One of my young (~25 years old) direct reports caught COVID last week. Well, he caught it about 2 and half weeks ago but didn't test positive or show any symptoms until last last week (~10 days after he was exposed). He is in rough shape. On top of the severe flu-like symptoms, he is having trouble breathing due to what appears to be an infection on his tonsils. One doctor thinks it's an infection but antibiotics haven't done a thing for him. Now another doctor is thinking it's COVID related. If it doesn't get better, he might have to get hospitalized soon. Crazy story he told me... when he was told he needed antibiotics, he headed to the pharmacy to get them. At first, they refused to allow him in to pick up his prescription, then they tried to send him home and get someone else to go to the pharmacy to pick it. When he told them everyone in his apartment had COVID, they finally brought it out to his car. He called a few days ago to get some "behind the counter" pseudoephedrine delivered to his home. They refused because that medication needs a signature and they wouldn't let him sign anything. How the hell are you supposed to get better if they won't bring you the medication you need?
  2. Unless his son found the Pep's tapes in his late father's things, we'll likely never hear them. They were supposedly destroyed by Horace after Cuscuna gave them to him.
  3. I have been told by a couple of musicians that Chick often talked about Scientology with musicians in his band. Several reportedly were uncomfortable with it.
  4. You're such a dickhead.
  5. No whining then - Fuck off. You are a shitty moderator and we all know it.
  6. Hey, moderators don't have to worry about moderation, doncha know?
  7. Funny - but I already tested out that theory when I started a Stanley Cowell - RIP thread in Miscellaneous Non-political and you moved it to Artists. Rather hypocritical on your part.
  8. In case you're forgetting - this is what Hardbopjazz said:
  9. I took it up with the moderator who clearly stated that he didn't give a shit.
  10. RIP Junior. I took part in the Go Fund Me or whatever he used to raise funds for his last recording. I was glad I was able to help him out with that last one.
  11. Bobby Hutcherson - Oblique (Blue Note/Tone Poet). The way people are raving about the sound on this over on the Hoffman forums, I was expecting to be blown away. Chambers' cymbals are recorded sizzling hot on this record. If I had to guess why this wasn't released when it was recorded, I would guess that this is the reason. I would not rate this that highly for sonics. The music is great though.
  12. Lou Donaldson - Alligator Boogaloo (Blue Note). This is the 80th anniversary pressing. Nicely done by Kevin Gray and pressed at Pallas in Germany.
  13. With today's spaghetti dinner with my daughters: 2017 Shafer TD9 & 2015 Stewart Cabernet Sauvignon The 2015 Shafer TD9 was much better than the 2017; The 2015 Stewart was a steal - $35 at the NH state liquor store on their "Price Busters" display.
  14. Lon - as I'm considering selling a whole slew of Japanese mini-LPs, I am wondering where you came up with your asking price. These seem to sell for a lot more than $11.00 on most websites like discogs and eBay.
  15. I debated posting what I did, but in this day and age, there seem to a lot of people doing crazy things because "I saw it on the internet". For instance, how many more times do I have to see some drunk Buffalo Bills fan belly flop onto a portable table before these fans figure out that it's not a wise thing to do?
  16. But if the Brubeck family has gotten the masters, they could easily reissue these live dates now. Although I was under the impression that there were a couple of Brubeck LPs that Brubeck himself refused to allow to be reissued.
  17. DO NOT MICROWAVE THEM. THEY ARE METAL FOIL. THEY COULD IGNITE. Just trying to prevent someone from burning down their house...
  18. One of the better sounding RVGs for sure. Do you have the 2 CD "complete" version or the single CD?
  19. I always thought the microphone used to record "Turkish Women at the Bath" was actually IN a bath(room).
  20. Clifford Brown tunes are still many years away from public domain. I think there's another 30 years left.
  21. Does your car have the option to play music from a USB port? My current car and the 3 I had before this one all did. If your car has that option, just buy a cheap USB memory stick/thumbdrive and copy the .wma or .mp3 files onto that stick directly. No more burning required. Again, I've rarely burned audio CDs from .mp3 files, so I don't know how the conversion is happening, but my guess is that whatever you are using to burn them now is not the same program you used to use. What program are you using to burn your CD-Rs? If you are using Windows Media Player, that might be restricting you to .wma files. If you can, try another burning tool and see if you can mix & match them again.
  22. I picked up the recent box set of The Complete Cuban Jam Sessions (Craft Recordings) on 5 CDs. It comes with a thick booklet. This box set is very nicely mastered - great sound. There's a small blemish on the back of the box where the wrapper stuck to it but otherwise it's what you'd expect from a box played twice. We discussed this release here: $38.00 including US shipping. International shipping will be at actual cost. Payment by PayPal.
  23. You should consider setting up a DVD-A/SACD surround system then. I have heard some incredible surround music with my system... most of it rock discs, but there are a few jazz & fusion discs that sound pretty good. "Incredible" would be Bob Belden's "Black Dahlia" surround mix on the Blue Note SACD. As you noted earlier, near the end of his life, Bob was using surround sound as a better way to present his music. This music likely represents our only chance to hear it in a jazz context (I have some new-agey surround music that he did later) and it is very nicely done. Adding this... Belden also did a surround mix on "Mysterious Shorter" with Nicholas Peyton, Sam Yehel, John Hart & Billy Drummond, but I don't think he had as much artistic input into the mix as it was done for Chesky Records and they had their own ideas there.
