Dexter Gordon - new Montmartre 1964 recordings with Tete Montoliu
Kevin Bresnahan replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
There is such a thing as too much of the same... As much as I love Dexter's playing, I won't be buying another live date from this time period. -
Just don't ask Gary why this hasn't come out on CD. I don't think he'll be polite with his answer. I bet he doesn't care one way or the other. He told me he hasn't made a penny from any of his earlier records. In fact, he told me to just copy it. He didn't care because he didn't make any money either way. He was very bitter about it. I gather he's not a fan of the music industry.

Gary Sisco - RIP
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
He was pretty prickly about some topics... I'm sure you are not the only one he unfriended over some slight political disagreement. He had an especially thin skin when talking about the military and/or veteran affairs. Given his years in the service, he had firm beliefs about that, with little wiggle room, especially if you hadn't served yourself. -
Gary Sisco - RIP

A longtime contributor to the old Jazz Central Station & Jazz Corner forums, Gary Sisco, died on September 17th. Even though I haven't seen or heard from Gary in many years, this still bums me out. He was quite the character, both on-line and in person. He used to live in this beautiful house on a hill in Jeffersonville, Vermont that he designed himself to make it so that Bronwyn could get around in her wheelchair. Being fellow Jazz fans, I used to plan my regular business trips to IBM in Burlington so that I could go to a show or two and visit with him & his wife Bronwyn at their manse. Bronwyn and Gary were great hosts and we stayed up into the wee hours of the night debating world events, usually over a few beers or in Sisco's case, a few joints. I was shocked when he told me they were selling that beautiful place and moving to Kentucky to be in horse country. I still remember that beautiful view out the windows. RIP Crispo. The world is less one cantankerous old devil and we are the worse for it. https://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/obituary-gary-sisco-1954-2020/Content?oid=31314782&fbclid=IwAR0hrovhGsFd6EoNsfftbKp1GaYJsnbpyXfL9500DEEWUoPZ2eabz5uUKuc

I thank that I was there with you and I'm almost positive it was at Birdland. Maybe that band played at both venues, but I saw an incredible show with a bunch of Jazz Corner forumites at Birdland. I've never been to the Knitting Factory. I think the show I went to was recorded too but something happened to the tape so they didn't release that particular show but another one recorded a short time later.

Michael Cuscuna tells me that 2months ago, Blue Note had Malcolm Addey go back to the 8 track analog masters for "Passing Ships" to remaster them for the new analog cut for a Tone Poet LP release.

Mingus - Pithecanthropus Erectus
Kevin Bresnahan replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There doesn't appear to be a 1990 CD release of this title: https://www.discogs.com/The-Charlie-Mingus-Jazz-Workshop-Pithecanthropus-Erectus/master/176929 I have a copy of the 1987 release and I don't recall it sounding terrible. In fact, given that a lot of the later releases could be compressed a bit, it might be the best that this date will sound on a CD release. The 1987 release has an alternate cover: -
I've actually been able to see Bartz perform live a lot more in the past 8 years than I had in previous 25. For some reason, he just didn't seem to come through Boston at the right time. Great player. His 2012 release, "Coltrane Rules (Tao Of A Music Warrior) is a great record. I can't believe he's 80.

The story I read said that there was evidence that a lot of the UK outbreaks are coming from colleges & universities, not grammar schools. -

Israel & France are inching closer to a complete shutdown. The UK is not far behind. The second wave started when they sent their kids back to school. -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Kevin Bresnahan replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Warne Marsh - Star Highs (Criss Cross). Although this is listed as a Warne Marsh date, it sometimes feels like a Hank Jones date. Hank plays very nicely on this. -

Ron Carter - Foursight - Stockholm Live (In & Out Records). Beautiful-sounding records. -

I spent most of the summer on the back deck streaming XM radio on my cellphone and playing the music via BlueTooth on my Bose Soundcolor II speaker. I think it sounded great. In fact, it sounded so good that when my brother & my sister-in-law heard it, they each went out and bought one. Another friend who had a different BlueTooth speaker was so impressed with the sound that he got rid of his old one and bought one of these. I don't know how they get so much sound out of this little cube but they do. Oh, I also streamed Amazon Music on it and it sounded great too. Asking Alexa to play some Hank Mobley and hearing tracks from "Soul Station" start to play brought an instant smile to my face. And I should add that the streamed audio of XM radio sounds much better than when you listen over-the-air. They don't seem to compress the digital data as much streaming.

Conrad Herwig - The Latin Side of Horace Silver
Kevin Bresnahan replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Herwig's other "latin side" dates have all been very good to great so I will have to look into this one. While I agree that Horace often leaned this way, Herwig's treatments might surprise you. -
I used to swap out audio components all the time. Then about 6 years ago, I stopped hearing many differences so I decided to stick with what I have. Sure, when they break, I'll replace them, but I'm done with getting the latest audio toy. FWIW, one of my biggest mistakes was moving into tubes for a while. To my ears, there was no discernable audio difference but they were very nice looking. If they weren't so damn hot, I probably would've kept them just on looks alone. But when I switched back to solid state and heard no difference, I felt like a fool for spending thousands of dollars thinking that tubes sound better.

Get her license plate number and the next time he rides down the sidewalk, call the police and let them know. Maybe when they knock on their door, the mother will realize the error of her approach. The law is the law and in this case, it's on your side.

COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Kevin Bresnahan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
As Miles would say, "So What"? You think they are any better? Stephen Hahn is the current head of the FDA and "in April 2020, Hahn instructed FEMA administrator Peter Gaynor "to distribute hydroxychloroquine to pharmacies nationwide," even though the emergency use authorization (EUA) issued by the FDA did not provide for outpatient use of hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19. Hydroxychloroquine was later linked to multiple deaths of COVID-19 patients, and the FDA revoked the EUA in June 2020". -
Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!
Kevin Bresnahan replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
Wallpaper paste! That's it! It's still very strong on the booklet and poster but it's finally fading on the cover material. When I first opened it, i got a headache. -
It looks like an old liquor cabinet. Not my style at all - I wouldn't take this if it was free. It appears that you do not have a wife. And I have absolutely zero interest in how this sounds. Antique Lo-Fi sound at its finest is still nowhere near as good as a modern basic digital set-up.

Kevin Bresnahan replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
Weird question but I have to ask... have any of you who received the EU version noticed a strange chemical odor when you opened this CD? I only ask because I have had this open for a few weeks now and it still reeks. -
RIP to a great musician. I only have a few records of his but I'll have to pick up a copy of "Horizons". That looks like an interesting session.
