Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (Complete?)
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
Go for it... I've pretty much given up on trying to get any answers from them. -
Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (Complete?)
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
It kinda irks me that they call this "complete" and include tracks that were previously deemed "rejected", yet there are clearly a bunch of other rejected tracks not being reissued. Blue Note needs to make up their mind - either release it all (complete) or don't call it complete. -

https://www.bluenote.com/kenny-burrell-with-art-blakey-on-view-at-the-five-spot-cafe-the-complete-masters-expanded-tone-poet-vinyl-edition/ LP1 Side 1: Birks’ Works (Dizzy Gillespie) – 9:43 Hallelujah* (Vincent Youmans) – 8:19 Side 2: Lady Be Good (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin) – 9:58 Lover Man (Jimmy Davis, Ram Ramirez, James Sherman) – 8:20 36-23-36* (Kenny Burrell) – 3:35 LP2 Side 3: Swingin’ (Clifford Brown) – 9:03 If You Could See Me Now* (Tadd Dameron, Carl Sigman) – 5:25 Beef Stew Blues* (Randy Weston) – 4:32 Side 4: The Next Time You See Me, Things Won’t Be the Same* (Earl Forest, Bill Harvey) – 7:30 The Take Off* (Kenny Burrell) – 5:30 LP3 Side 5: Birks’ Works alternate take (Dizzy Gillespie) – 9:39 Lady Be Good alternate take (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin) – 9:55 Side 6: Love Walked In (George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin) – 5:45 36-23-36/The Theme (Kenny Burrell) – 12:27 Kenny Burrell, guitar Tina Brooks, tenor saxophone Bobby Timmons, piano Roland Hanna, piano* Ben Tucker, bass Art Blakey, drums >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sides 4, 5 & 6 are all previously unissued tracks, which seems to indicate that they're going with 4 tracks that were previously "rejected". That said, I have to wonder if "rejected" here means that they simply chose a different take as is the case for "Birks' Works", "Lady Be Good" & "36-23-36"? -
Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot Cafe (Complete?)
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Re-issues
I really like this CD so I will be buying the new 2-CD set for sure. There were 5 unreleased tracks with Tina Brooks. All are listed as "rejected". All of them are alternates of tunes already released. -
Blue Note's latest "secret society" email announced an upcoming reissue. >>>>>>>>> Blue Note Announcement <<<<<<<<< Kenny Burrell With Art Blakey "On View At The Five Spot Café: The Complete Masters" We’re excited for Tone Poet Society members to be the first to know about the April 11 release of On View At The Five Spot Café: The Complete Masters, a special expanded Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of guitarist Kenny Burrell’s 1959 hard bop summit with drummer Art Blakey! The 3-LP, 2-CD & digital sets present the complete recorded performances from that evening for the first time in any format including 6 previously unissued tracks. Today, we’re offering Tone Poet Society members only the chance to pre-order the set exclusively on the Blue Note Store >>>>>>>> end of Blue Note Announcement <<<<<<<< According to Michael Cuscuna/Michel Ruppli's discography, there were only 5 "unissued" tunes left in the can, so we're likely to be getting at least one tune that was originally deemed "rejected". The 5 unissued tunes are: from set 1 The Next Time You See Me, Things Won't Be The Same from set 2 Lover Man from set 3 The Take Off from set 4 Our Delight The Next Time You See Me, Things Won't Be The Same Among the rejected song titles are few that are unique and several that would be alternates. The unique/previously unissued songs that show as "rejected" are: Tricotism The Take Off/36-23-36 (a different take is listed above as an "unissued" tune) The Next Time You See Me, Things Won't Be The Same (two different takes also listed above as "unissued" tunes) If You Could See Me Now Love Walked In All other "rejected" tunes would be alternates of previously issued tunes on the US CD & SACD releases. FWIW, I think "The Take Off" is a variation on "The Theme", played at the end of the sets because it is listed as "36-23-36/Theme" as the 5th set closer.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Westbrook is 88, so it's understandable if he's slowing down a bit. -
Not a joke per se, but I thought this was pretty funny. Watch it to the end...

I really like this CD. I'll have to pull it out again.

Corea's widow is as deep into that group as he was. -
At least it's not in his lap as he drives down the highway like I see a lot of idiots doing these days.

I think we need to cut out the religion talk. I know Jim A wants these forums clear of politics and religion so I'll stick to that. It's why I didn't mention the group that I expect this auction will benefit. -
Chick Corea's record collection auction
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I honestly don't think I could bid on any of these with good conscience. Knowing Chick, I'm sure a large portion of the proceeds from this sale are going to a group that I just don't want to support in any shape or form. -
Mario Pavone - Song For (Septet) (New World Records). Mario Pavone, bass; Thomas Chapin, alto sax, flute; Bill Ware, vibes; Peter Madsen, piano; Peter McEachern, trombone; Steve Johns, drums. Every time I spin this, I wonder why I don't spin more frequently. You can hear it on bandcamp and if you like it, you can buy it today (2/7) when 100% of bandcamp's profits go to benefit those suffering hardships from the LA fires.

It has been reported that board member Claude Schlouch has died at age 83. Claude was well known for his discographies of Kenny Dorham and Bud Powell and he shared that knowledge with us regularly. I will miss seeing his posts. This is all I could find for a notice: https://www.libramemoria.com/defunts/schlouch-claude/07d95cda5782466190b8425667ff1a3c

The value of this particular record from Chick's personal collection is 100% due to that personalized autograph. I'd love to own it myself. -

CTI ALLTIME COLLECTION (60 Titles) March '25
Kevin Bresnahan replied to RiRiIII's topic in Re-issues
This is up on YouTube and it's pretty good. It has a typical "large music hall" audio sound, which is not my favorite live recording venue & with this band, I was somehow expecting more musically. -
1956-61: All collected in this great Mosaic box.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure that someone who signs a super-max contract is tied to their team with a no trade clause for a year. -

That depends on how many owners have a financial stake in Draft Kings or FanDuel. In the NFL, these gambling websites rule the roost, with the KC Chiefs reaping the rewards of an NFL looking out for the bettors. The calls the Chiefs get on a weekly basis is nuts. If I were a gambling man, I would have trouble betting against the KC Refs... er, I mean Chiefs. It's funny being a Patriots fan all these years and reading all of the "The Patriots get all the calls" and then see it with the Chiefs. Whereas I saw tons of calls go against the Pats, a couple of iffy calls in their favor (no, Chris Jones did not rough the passer, but yes, Ford was lined up offsides) is chump change compared to what I see week after week with the Chiefs. -
Is Kirk still playing? He turns 88 in two weeks, so I would not be shocked to hear he has stopped playing.

But does that make sense? Dončić would have gotten a super-max contract with the Mavs. He can't with any other team, including the Lakers. Also his current contract has him near max contract $$ and his player option for 2026 is $49 Million, which is more than a lot of the superstars around the league are getting on their max contracts. I think this is all on the Mavs management not wanting to pay Luka with a super-max contract. They basically screwed him. From: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10153150-nba-insider-luka-doncic-ineligible-for-345m-supermax-contract-after-lakers-trade "ESPN's Bobby Marks reported he is no longer eligible for the super-max extension this summer that would have paid him $345 million over five years." Given how this looks, I would think that this hurts the Mavs for future free agent signings. Who wants to play for a team that screws over their best player?
