  1. I immediately thought of the Buck Clayton Jam Sessions when I opened this topic. But another I expected to see was Duke Ellington's "Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue" from Newport '56.
  2. I didn't like "Footprints Live" much at all. I guess that means I understood what this band was doing back then too?
  3. It's still being used but Rudy pretty much stopped cutting vinyl in the late 80's when most record labels dropped vinyl. I have plenty of CDs that were recorded at Rudy's place in the 90s and 00s. Fine recording but I bought it because of Hardman, Cook, etc back when it was released. The RVG connection was at least secondary. While I may have bought it on a whim for "Van Gelder" in the deadwax, the names certainly helped in this case. Turk Mauro & Jed Levy on the other hand...
  4. Bill Hardman - Home (Muse). Another bargain bin Van Gelder pressing. These are turning out to be pretty fun - buy it for "Van Gelder" in the deadwax for a few dollars and take your chances. This one is one of the best ones yet. Never on CD either. Well worth picking up if you trip over it in some store. 5. Turk Mauro - Heavyweight! (Phoenix Jazz). I bought this mainly because it had Van Gelder in the deadwax but it doesn't matter the "why", I'm glad I picked it up. Good stuff. What a fucking bizarre All Music entry!! http://www.allmusic.com/artist/turk-mauro-mn0000169721
  6. Jed Levy - Good People (Reservoir). Van Gelder in the deadwax. I didn't even know that Rudy was cutting masters in 1988 after he'd gone over to digital recording. Even the Muse stuff he recorded at that time came with "Mastered by RVG" in the deadwax, not his eponymous "VAN GELDER" stamp, which I always assumed meant that someone else did the actual cutting.
  7. Pat Metheny - The Pat Metheny Group (ECM) 1978. Sounds like early smooth Jazz. What do you want for a dollar?
  8. Elvin Jones - The Ultimate. Dark blue label Van Gelder pressing. I do like this trio. I think "Putting It Together" is a bit better but this is pretty good.
  9. Yeah, and it's an orchestra but it's not either.
  10. I've listened to this twice through now and it just isn't quite my style. It would be great to see live but as a recording, I have trouble seeing all of the connections between the individual players.
  11. Ammons & Stitt - Boss Tenors In Orbit (Verve) Original RVG promo mono(?) pressing. No indication that it's stereo so I guess it's mono. BTW, first tunes played with my newly arrived Mcintosh MX-110 tubed preamp. Sounds pretty good but better? Jury's still out.
  12. Most of them came out on two-fers.
  13. Heath's "Picture Of Heath" has been out on CD a couple of times, with the latest being on a Prevue CD issued in 1998.
  14. My answer to this thread is, the whole Bee Hive catalog with the exception of Johnny Hartman's "Once In Every Life", which was issued on two soundtrack CDs for "The Bridges Of Madison County". Great stuff there. I play my needledrop CDs often.
  15. Coleman's "Big George" came out in 1990 on an Affinity CD called "Stablemates". It couples Junior Cook's "Pressure Cooker" (minus the track "The 8th Cat") with the complete "Big George" session. Someone in Germany has a copy on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CD-Junior-COOK-QUARTET-Stablemates-G-Coleman-Affinity-1990-like-new-AFF-766/160678311955 and someone has a copy for $60 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Stablemates-Junior-Quartet-Coleman-Affinity/dp/B000LFLGN4
  16. Maybe more like someone on eBay is trying to sell an empty bottle of BB for $55. P.T. Barnum knew what he was talking about.
  17. Next Thursday night (1/24) Scullers in Boston has a band in house that they've billed as "Baritone Madness". 3 bari players on the front line. Sounds like a great night. I wonder if they're going to play the Bee Hive album in it's entirety? It'll be hard to top the pace of "Donna Lee".
  18. Is this any good? Someone has been trying to sell a copy for while but I knew nothing about it.
  19. Oh... clocks... I thought the topic said something else. :D:D
  20. Tor Lundvall - The Shipyard (Dais) Number 24 out of 500 pressed. Dark ambient sounds that is very relaxing for me. Someone posted a few tracks on youtube: <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/y72Z8nCR3jU?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KiVGgNaR6Tw?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  21. A real blast from the 1970s to see that cover again ! Issued with special clarity!
  22. I sent some Mr. Priester's way. I'm glad to see that he got in touch with the Jazz Foundation of America too. They are a great organization that was established just for this type of situation.
  23. Last one for the night... Herbie Mann - Great Ideas Of Western Mann (Japanese Riverside)
  24. Just finished: Pat Metheny - Rejoicing (ECM). Side one is nice but side 2... not so much. Now playing: Johnny Griffin - Bush Dance (Galaxy). I've heard better Griff before. Just OK. Indicative of the times, I guess.
  25. Actually, he'll need a specific decoder downstream to handle the copy-protected DSD bitstream. Denon's decoder is called Denon Link and even they had trouble implementing it over the objections of Sony. Sony never wanted SACD streamed. They required players to have analog outputs exclusively for many years. BTW, I never understood the desire to stream DSD anyway. The digital-to-analog conversion has to happen somewhere. Why would the D/A converter be better in a cheapie Denon or Onkyo reveiver than the D/A converter in the player itself?
