You can only play SACD through HDMI if your preamp/receiver can properly decode it. The last I knew, there were only a couple of preamps/receivers out there that could do it. Denon was one. Maybe Onkyo was the other?

After JazzWax's Marc Myers wrote that Jordi Pujol "lovefest" interview a while back, I stopped reading anything he wrote.

I just bought tickets to see McCoy at the Regattabar in Febraury and I got to thinking about this thread. Here we are 7 years later and McCoy is still out there touring. I am glad that he got over his health problems.

I have listened to machines that convert to PCM and machines that don't and I haven't been able to hear any lessening of sound quality. Both sounded great. I have to wonder if the "no PCM for SACDs" stance is simply a continuation of the SACD vs. DVD-A debate. The thing is, they both lost.

Wayne Shorter's Without A Net on the Blue Note label
Kevin Bresnahan replied to EyeSpeech's topic in New Releases
What I find most strange about the cover is that it appears to be a nude woman & young girl falling from the sky. Considering what happened to Wayne's wife & neice... well, could it be that this is what Wayne was doing here or does he actually not see the connection? -
Why are these kind of gigs even organized?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
FWIW, I was being ironic. Really? I would never have guessed! On the other hand, I was being very serious. I even started looking around for information on this Dexter Gordon tribute tour to see if they were able to get Eric. -

Sometimes you may know a little about it from the word of mouth. Sometime the same players or organization have done them before and you know from past experiences whether it's worthwhile to give a listen. The Blue Note has done many with McCoy and others that I wouldn't go to, for example. All of these factors can give you a idea if the program is going to be worthwhile, or if it's going to be a thrown together set of players picking tunes on stage, playing with little real energy. There's going to be a Dexter Gordon Tribute coming up soon. Dexter's widow and manager Maxine Gordon is fully involved, and the musical director is George Cables. Sounds good. And the role of Dexter will be played by Eric Alexander? One can only hope. He'd do a great job of it. BTW, the chance to hear most of these classic Jazz recordings played live by *anyone* may be a once in a lfetime event for a lot of us "youngsters" (the under 50 crowd). Just because some of you saw Coltrane play "Ascension" live doesn't mean no one else wants to see it and hear it live again today. Ditto for a Dexter Gordon tribute. I've never seen Dexter Gordon live and I never will. He's dead, but his music doen't have to be. My only option to hear Dexter Gordon's music in a live setting is seeing it played by someone alive today who can play it like him. -
Real Gone Music: Some new BN reissues!
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Swinging Swede's topic in Re-issues
Yeah, but fwiw, it is expressly ILLEGAL for anyone who obtains promo copies from record labels to sell them for profit. So that puts Dusty Groove on both sides of the fence. On one hand, they finally woke up a few years ago and stopped selling black market Euro releases. On the other hand, they continue to resell promos that they shouldn't have bought in the first place. The courts have ruled that selling promos is NOT illegal. It was a big lawsuit and it went pretty high up the appellate food chain. The court ruled that once a label gives away a disc, it's no longer theirs. -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Kevin Bresnahan replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Agreed re Cisco , but as I recall a poster here disagreed. I have the DG and Hancock's Takin' Off both of which sound excellent to my ears. I went to pull out my Cisco copy of "Gettin' Around" and realized that it was actually "One Flight Up". Oops. So dcmark's King issue of "Gettin' Around" may be one of the better sounding versions out there. I have a Van Gelder pressing and it sounds pretty good to me. -

To my ears, the 1995 Connoisseur LP of "A Slice Of The Top" sounds better than the Rainbow LP from 1979. I've never seen the King issue so I have no idea how it compares. If you really like Dexter's "Gettin' Around", pick up a copy of the Cisco LP. Even though Cisco went out of business several years ago, there are sealed copies floating around the web for under $30 (list price at issue). These Cisco LPs sound phenomenal. -

Last one for a while... Various Artists - The Broadway Scene (Moodsville MV38). Original green label Van Gelder pressing. This one's going into the trade pile. I expected not to have as many tracks on this compilation as I do. -

Zoot Sims - Zoot Sims Plays Four Altos (MCA rainbow label) To my ears, it sounds like 3 altos more than necessary. Probably going into the trade pile. I picked it up mainly because Steve Hoffman mastered it and I can always sell it over on his forum. -

Willie Williams - House Calls (New Note). Bought this sealed and the cellophane was a bitch to get off. Actually, it didn't come completely off. It looks like the record has the mange. For a debut recording, very well done! Liking this one a lot. -

Kevin Bresnahan replied to Daniel A's topic in Re-issues
Case in point - I was playing a vinyl of this vintage of 'Time For Tyner' yesterday, Transamerica Corp. blue Label. Great LP and music but the pressing absolutely sucked ! Is that the one where one side is a Van Gelder cut and the other isn't? I agree that one it isn't the best. However, it seems to be an exception. In general, I've had good luck with these pressings when they have Van Gelder in the deadwax. Not so much luck when they don't. -
I've said it before so I'll say it again, Mosaic could do some great boxes if they could license some Bee Hive sessions. A complete Nick Brignola Bee Hive maybe? I've talked to Michael about it a few times and he's more than interested but says that label owner Jim Neumann won't do it. Shame that this great catalog goes unheard by so many of today's Jazz fans.

As I view this on my laptop running Linux (Ubuntu), I smile. Of course, my work PC is still vulnerable, but I don't use that one to surf much and when I do, I always run Firefox with NoScript. -

Shelly Manne - Perk Up (Concord). You would think Manne could have gotten Bill Perkins to play on this one. Same cut corner as this picture too. -
I have this CD and is in a mini LP sleeve from Japan. The catalog number is COCB-50307 and it appears to have been issued in August of 2000.

The availability of Widmer (and Redhook) should be no surprise - Anheuser-Bush is a part owner and they have control over many distribution networks. -
Damn! All these years and I thought "Rescue Me" was Aretha's work. D'oh! RIP Fontella. I always love it when "Rescue Me" comes belting out of my speakers.
