  1. Not me... Philly Joe Jones is great on "Whistle Stop". It's one my favorite PJJ dates.
  2. I have most of this session as part of an odd Affinity CD release called "Stablemates", which combined "Pressure Cooker" (minus the track "The 8th Cat") with George Coleman's "Big George".
  3. Cool looking bike and a great price but the range is a bit limited... which is likely true with all electric motorcycles, since there is only so much space for the battery.
  4. I re-watched the movie "Nobody" again last night. I know it's just another bloody gore-fest a la John Wick, but I enjoy this movie so much more than those Wick movies, mainly because his everyday life is so like my own at times. Alarm, breakfast, bring out the trash, get the kids off to school, commute, work, commute, dinner, bedtime - over & over ad nauseam until...
  5. I haven't played that one in a while. Graham's use of overdubbing gives this quartet the sound of a much bigger band. Not having played an instrument myself in man years, I sometimes wonder how easy it is to play along with yourself. Do you find yourself thinking about what you already laid down as you play the new accompaniment or do you try to forget that it's you and play like you're a member of the band?
  6. I have that CD. It's really good. The copy I had came with a bunch of promotional stuff about Plas. I waited for him to come through Boston but he never did as far as I am aware.
  7. E-bikes are not burning down NYC. Lithium batteries are causing a lot of fires everywhere - including NYC. But Lithium batteries are not exclusive to E-bikes and NYC fires are not only due to E-bikes. They are in every cellphone & laptop made today. Is your co-op board going to ban them too? Will they ban EVs from being charged in your parking lot? It's a serious situation that needs to be addressed, but trying to place the blame entirely on E-bikes seems shortsighted. Lithium battery fires are a big problem and I truly believe that what is needed is better regulation. No one should be able to sell any battery or charging system without it undergoing UL certification, but since the US pretty much dismantled their regulatory departments to save money, this isn't being done. I don't think it's even required. And I don't see this changing with what's going on in the US. In fact, there is probably going to be even less industry regulation as the US seems intent on allowing big businesses to cut corners in order to maximize profits. My Magnum Cruiser comes with a UL charger that shuts off when the battery is charged. They still recommend not charging the battery after the green light goes off (indicating a fully-charged battery) and never leave it plugged in for more than 24 hours (heat?). I am very careful when I charge my battery, only doing it when I'm home and making sure to unplug it once I see that green light. Self regulatory - that's me.
  8. Great article. I particularly liked where it said, "studies have shown that riders using pedal-assists—a type of e-bike that amplifies your pedal power but does not take over entirely—get more exercise than those on regular bikes, because they cycle longer and more frequently". I know this is true for me. I pretty much stopped riding for about 3 years, only going out when I felt guilty or, more likely, after a look in a mirror at my gut.
  9. All this Sonny Clark talk... Great sound quality to my ears... even back when my ears could tell the difference.
  10. I've been riding bicycles for many years. For the longest time, I've ridden a Trek hybrid. I liked the riding position more than a straight street bike. As time has gone on, my rides have gotten shorter and I plan my trips to avoid big hills. Then my friend brought over his new ebike and had me take it for a spin. Wow - What a blast! I bought a Magnum Cruiser and off I went. I love this thing. Hills have completely disappeared and long rides are enjoyable again. Yes, I am playing my "old fart" card, but at this point of my life but I earned it. My older brother refuses to even sit on it. He acts as if it's not even a real bicycle. But we both know the real reason is that he would love it and have to buy one himself.
  11. Tried watching Citadel but we got stuck about half way through episode 3 and haven't really gone back. Should probably try to push through. Surprisingly enjoyed Daisy Jones & the Six on Amazon. Lately, my wife & I have tried to find a half-hour sit-com to fill up those "do we stay up or hit the hay" times and we started watching the ancient repeats of Caroline in the City on Paramount+. We're finding it very funny and far enough back in our memories that it's somewhat new again. Although I seem to remember it went dramatically downhill after season 1.
  12. They do say this: The first six titles are AAA-mastered from tapes, and the final two are mastered from a hybrid of the highest quality digital and physical masters available, with lacquers cut by Ryan Smith and Barry Grint.
  13. Anchor Brewing Company announced Wednesday it is ceasing operations and liquidating its San Francisco-based business: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12291735/Americas-craft-brewery-shuts-127-years.html The writing is on the wall: if you don't make an IPA, you won't make it in the craft beer industry. This follows close on the heels of one of my favorite local breweries closing - Spencer Brewery - The only Trappist brewery in the U.S. is closing (and IPAs are to blame). I wish I liked IPAs. I really do. Because they are everywhere and I would be in beer heaven right now. But I don't like IPA at all.
  14. I used to see that date in the CD bins and never did pick it up. The CD cover looks like this:
  15. I remember those! I wasn't a Sesame Street watcher but my younger sister was and since there was only one TV in the house, I got stuck watching it often enough.
  16. I hate to admit it, but my ears are at a point where I have stopped looking at sonic upgrades. If there was any music in here that I didn't already own, I'd jump at it, but no.
  17. What I find striking is that even this list has only one trumpet player under the age of 30 (Giveton Gelin) and several are close to 50.
  18. Reading the Hoffman forums, I would say that today's Jazz vinyl buyers are extremely finicky, so I would not think it good business sense for Mosaic to get back into vinyl today. The returns would probably force them out of business in a year.
  19. This is it for me. If we don't hear back from Cary Baker, I've given it my best shot.
  20. I tried messaging Cary Baker on Facebook since he is listed as being the one who interviewed Jay's widow Patty for the recent Omnivore release of a lost Migliori date. I don't know if he'll answer a random Facebook person's request, so if anyone knows him, see if you can get him to ask Patty about this.
  21. I used to consider Jeremy Pelt to be a great "young" trumpeter, but he's 46 now - hardly what I'd consider young. I think it's getting harder for me to discover new players, particularly because I often go to shows where the players' names are familiar. I do love being pleasantly surprised when a new face shows up there. I wish I could remember the name of the young tenor sax player that got up and jammed with Bill Pierce during Alex Minasian's show at Scullers last year.
  22. I already had it for many years before he recommended it. He doesn't often recommend jazz recordings, so I find it interesting when he does.
  23. The DoubleTime 2-CD set is pretty cheap on discogs: https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/1788109?ev=rb
  24. Steve Hoffman recommended this one years ago and I agree with him that it's a really good swinging jazz LP. For a while it was hard to find after his recommendation but the years have marched on, so it's likely available again. Until he mentions it again or someone bubbles his old post back up.
  25. Hank Mobley - A Slice Of The Top (Blue Note Connoisseur LP). I really enjoy this session. I have since I first heard it on the LT LP that I bought many years ago. I still think the cymbals are wonky on some of the tracks, which is why I'm guessing it wasn't released when it was recorded but who knows, maybe Blue Note just didn't like it? Michael Cuscuna deserves all of the credit he has gotten for creating that great LT series in the late 70s. Happy birthday Hank.
