  1. Some funny remarks, but if the music went where Lou wanted it to go, it might never have gone beyond swing or jazz influenced r&b. I wish McBride had played him some Bird, so we could read his comments on that music. With Bird, he might have toned down what he had to say.

  5. One more idiot out to make someone else's life miserable.
  6. Very INTENSE music, though not at all imprecise or chaotic. I'll have to live with this recording for a longer time. One listen won't come close to doing it. Roscoe Mitchell, at 74, is a keeper of the flame. Wonderful photos by Lauren Deutsch and very fine, lucid liner notes by John Litweiler. And Carla Nessa has outdone herself with the design of the booklet. It unfolds beautifully, just as the music does. It's obvious that she gave a great deal of care and attention to it.

If this thread continues, eventually Moms will post a video of every blues performer who ever recorded. And they'll all be better than Robert Johnson.

    Robert Johnson

John Litweiler got it right: Thank you. And I know you're a serious listener JL but it has little to nothing to do with 'fashion' per se. FACT: Robert Johnson offers absolutely nothing, ZERO, in terms of lyricism. There are precisely NO known verses by him that evince any individuality and even the assemblages are generally trite. That leaves the singing & guitar playing. On his best sides-- which I'll number four or five, no more, yes, he's a strong performer... But is that strong enough, just because Mitch Miller's record label said so? Why, when I have the ability to listen jazz-pop-blues 1923-1935 (say, though I strong advise all extend that back to the 1890s via Archeophone etc) am I supposed to stop in my tracks when Robert Johnson shows up in 1936 with marginally sharp, somewhat better sounding but also often rather simplified, 'standardized' versions of what's passed before? If someone wants to get in the same boat as Greil Marcus AND Eric Clapton, Chango help us all! Luke Jordan, Charley Jordan, Louis Jordan >>>>> ALL have far more to offer Robert Johnson and that's just for starters. I could, on another occasion, argue that Robert Johnson veneration is in some ways racist, or at least reductionist, in its prioritization of white boy bullshit mythos over unruly all black everything and if someone really wants to extol RJ as "Chicago electric blues" progenitor (a dubious assertion to begin with) I can only ask... are you sure that's a "good" thing? it can be, sometimes, true... Moms, I read some of your posts and think: He knows so much. But he ain't smart.

You've been reading too many Steven Calt liner notes.
  16. I'm not one to constantly listen to tweaks and such, but I have heard a difference when I've changed the speaker wire in my system. Science can "prove" whatever it wants. Those who want to can trust science. I'll trust my ears.
  17. F. Lee Bailey Horace Rumpole She (who must be obeyed)
  18. And it may have more to do with Ornette's music than some of the actual recordings of Ornette's compositions.
  19. I watched Inspector Morse: Absolute Conviction last night. Looking at the credits, I saw that Nick Heckstall-Smith was the 2nd assistant director. I did a search and, from what I could find, he's the nephew of the late saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith.
  20. Just received a shipping confirmation. Thanks, Chuck.
  21. There was a second season and a third is in production. Endeavor doesn't rate as highly with me as Morse or Lewis, but I still like it. I'm a sucker for anything Morse related.
