  1. Mix up of calls and very strange final decision on that play during the Mets-Atlanta game yesterday. Can't remember seeing one like that before.
  2. Meatyard had a unique vision.
  3. I wonder how many times they think they can sell this music to me.

  6. "The first great improvisers had shown that solo improvisations could be played with drama, personality and even a kind of movie-star charisma. But Hawkins took it a step further: Finding that playing variations on a song's melody could get you only so far, he also improvised on the chord changes." "With harmonic progression as his starting point, Hawkins showed how he could extend an improvisation almost indefinitely. Not only were all saxophonists in his debt, but so were Art Tatum, Django Reinhardt and nearly every musician of the 1940s and '50s. Not until the '60s did jazzmen begin to look beyond chord changes for inspiration." There's a lot of "Hawk is god" oversimplification and just plain wrongheadedness in those sentences.

  10. Or you could do what Archie Shepp did on a Leonard Feather Down Beat blindfold test back in the 60's - give everything five stars. And let the editor know that's what you're doing. That way, people will have to read your text to find out what you think about the music. The editor probably won't go for that, but at least you'll have made your point. edit - should have said five dots.
  11. Worked ok for me this morning, but what do I know?
  12. Despite Bud's b.s. ruling that the winning team gets home field advantage in the series, the all-star game is a spectacle, a chance for fans to see their favorite players. How many people remember who won the all-star game 10 years ago - without looking it up? If LaRussa had any bit of class, he would have given a 38 year old who is having a great season so far and carrying his team, the chance to start the game. And I'm not a Mets fan. In my book, LaRussa is as bogus as his dyed hair.
  13. GoodSpeak is hardly without bias in this argument. Even he would have to admit that.

  17. I bought a few of these when they came out on lp in the 1970's. I've kept the Johnny Otis and Joe Liggins lps. They're good records and capture a lot of the spirit of earlier recordings by these artists.
  18. I remember asking my folks to order it for me as a Christmas present. Still have it - with Charles Mingus' signature.

  20. Hm. I thought I'd be all over this one when it was announced, but looking at what's included started me thinking. I have a cd issue of the Town Hall Concert, the 2 lp Ulysse/East Coasting 2 LP set, the original 2 lp Jazz Workshop issue of Mingus at Monterey (plus a 2 lp Japanese reissue of same), and a Japanese lp reissue of My Favorite Quintet. So it looks like there's about an hour and 40 minutes of music I don't have. Tough call if I want to spend $102 + shipping, not to mention the space that the Mosaic Box will take up. Earlier on in my life, I'd have gone for it without thinking. Now, I'm not so sure.
  21. But, no, this was the earlier discussion for the other one You're right. Have to start checking dates. But the later discussion does include the concert personnel info for the Royal Jazz cd. The info on the cd booklet is incomplete.
