  1. According to Nick Catalano's Clifford Brown biography - not a very good book, imo, so take this for what it's worth - Annie Ross and Wallington, two caucasion members in a primarily black band were taking some flack from critics who felt that only black musicians could play jazz. Art Farmer is quoted as a source for this information. Hughes Panassie supposedly pressured Hampton to fire Ross before the band reached Paris. Hampton's wife Gladys did so. According to Farmer, George Wallington's wife was Annie Ross' manager at the time and Wallington quit as a show of unity. As I say, the Nick Catalano bio is the source for this information, so I don't know how reliable it is. edit - brownie's post wasn't there when I wrote my post. Catalano also makes mention of the Stockholm sessions and quotes Ross saying that she was friendly with the bebop contingent in the band which didn't make Lionel Hampton happy.

    Robert Johnson

Okay, I can't quite just let this go unanswered. Yes, Robert Johnson seems to have listened to lots of blues records carefully, and learned their lessons well. When I listen to Kokomo Arnold, Lonnie Johnson, and especially Leroy Carr, I hear lots of stuff Robert Johnson got from them. Yes, RJ learned a lot from records. But it's just as clear to me that a lot of his music reflected what was in the air in Mississippi at the time. The Library of Congress recordings made by Son House, Muddy Waters and others a few years after Johnson's death touch on some of the same musical territory. And in the end, Robert Johnson's achievements surpass his influences. I have no interest in arguing about whether Johnson was the "greatest" or "most important" bluesman of all time, or of his time, or whatever. To me he, was like Bach - he represents the highest peak of a musical style that was already becoming unfashionable; at the same time, his music pointed toward the future and the next steps in the music's evolution. Saying that Robert Johnson learned blues from records is like saying Bach learned music by copying Vivaldi - in both cases, it's kinda true, but ultimately not really important. His music, like J.S.B.'s, far transcended its influences. Yeah, I agree completely - Robert Johnson was a sponge, a thief, or whatever you want to call it. BUT - he turned whatever he took into something his own. That's some of what artistry is about. Whether Robert Johnson was "the best" is strictly a matter of opinion. As far as I'm concerned, someone who says any musician is "the best" is pretty foolish.

  12. I'm not the biggest Hill fan, but the clips sounded interesting. I look forward to listening to it. So what do you think Paul? Hope you're enjoying this date. On first listen, I was more drawn to Sam Rivers' and J.C. Moses' playing, but I'll be going back to it. There's more for me to hear there.

  18. I found that whole blog thing very creepy. When I die, I don't want to have some stranger walking into my home and reporting on me based on what he might think he sees. I'm not famous, so I won't have to worry about that. What I'm saying is that the public doesn't have a right to know everything - or even anything, in most cases.
