  1. Thanks for posting that. Change is inevitable, but it's good that there are people who stick with what they believe in, no matter what current trends may be. Seems that Mr. Sear was one of those people.

  4. Perhaps I shouldn't have said "any genre". Rap & Tyrolean Alphorn Music are outside of my interests (tho I've heard nothing of the latter) - reggae isn't. I've begun most of my listening in different genres through recommendations, but I've found that it doesn't take long to develop my own tastes. And I find that having listening experience in other genres often carries over in getting a feel for a new genre.

  6. Can't know they're crummy 'til you've heard 'em, and usually there's something which leads to giving 'em a listen to begin with. Yeah, I've bought things that I've considered mediocre, poor, or crummy. You have to take chances or you'll miss out on a lot. But once I peg something as not so hot, I definitely don't keep listening to it. That's what I meant. Also, I listen to music as music. I try not to confine myself to a few genres and accept everything within those genres. Hope that doesn't sound pompous or self righteous.
  7. Yeah - I hear what you're saying. If I get a chance to hear it sometime, I'll form my own opinion. Until then, there's plenty of other stuff out there that's probably much more promising. Thanks again for your input/opinion.

  9. Thanks, Jim. Wondered if it was one of those sesssions that reads better than it sounds.
  10. Interesting (unless I missed it) that there's no mention of which university he attended.
  11. Anyone have thoughts on The Bop Session (Gazell)? Lineup (Dizzy, Stitt, Max, Percy Heath, Hank Jones) looks good. ???
  12. Any more info about that documentary? Is it available anywhere? Available here: http://www.lesblank.com/main.html and here: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=8000660&style=movie

  15. There's too much good to great music - some that I've heard & some that I haven't heard yet - for me to waste what time I may have left on listening to "mediocre, poor and even thoroughly crummy albums." Just my opinion - others may and probably will disagree.

  17. To answer some of your questions: From an interview conducted by Ken Dryden w. Paolo Piangarelli who owns the Philology label - published in 2008: "I've issued 25 volumes of Parker [bird's Eyes], with many more unreleased." - http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=30604 Cadence carries the Philology catalogue, including many of the Bird's Eyes titles. http://db.cadencebuilding.com/searchresults/?description_option=contains&description=&title_option=contains&title=&label_option=is&Label=philology&price_option=lte&Price=&Number=&BK=BK&CD=CD&CDR=CDR&DVD=DVD&LP=LP&VHS=VHS&new=new&date_added=any&max_count=500&offset_count=0&sort_order=description&Search=Search - Scroll down to find the Charlie Parker titles. What's unique to the Philology label will take a better man than I to figure out. They've issued a lot of great material in what seems to be a haphazard manner. If you can find an up to date Charlie Parker discography perhaps you can make sense of it. Good luck with that. Hope this has helped you at least a little.

  19. Several deaths in that family over the past year. Vanessa Redgrave's daughter, Natasha Richardson died tragically in 2009. Corin Redgrave, brother of Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave died recently.
  20. Damn! Playing one gig and then catching two more - all in the same day. Lucky you're still a young fella.

  22. It's one of my favorite McLean dates. Mine, too. P.S. I wrote the notes for that belated 1979 Blue Note Classic issue (the guys in Japan jumbled up the notes, got the typed pages out of order -- think that may have been corrected for the later CD). Also, it's "Consequence," not "Consequences." As far as the music goes - different strokes. I never had the LP release or the CD release. Just went by the title given in the Mosaic booklet - listed there as Consequences. I knew the tune was "Consequence", but thought that the album title was Consequences. My bad.
