  5. Never had much of an interest in Mr. Benson - many other guitarists I'd rather listen to, and hundreds, perhaps thousands of other singers I'd rather listen to. I have no problem with pop music, as long as it doesn't insult my intelligence or sensibilities. George Benson's pop music insults both of those.
  6. Bruce - You have the strength and depth of character to pull through this. Plus, your family and everyone here - even the non-Pistons fans - are behind you. All the best to you as you fight the good fight. Please keep us posted.

  11. Wow, sir!--show some respect, the man has been dead for a decade and a half! He was a legendary guitarist/composer. Some lyrics and themes are overly provocative for the sake of defying censorship. But if that gets to you, besides the significant work with the Mothers of Invention, like We're Just in it for the Money, listen to Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, the Grand Wazoo, or Uncle Meat and then tell me his music stank. Some of the 80s stuff where he experimented with drum machines and synthesizers is not my bag, but for the most part it is really creative stuff that predated and influenced a lot of wonderful music that has gotten more praise than it should have. Your opinion and mine differ, & that's ok.

  13. The first album is the one I have and wrote about. Yes... my apologies! I was confusing Martinho da Vila with another male samba singer who was on the 2nd release. Either way, it's a great album. No need for apologies. I didn't even know that there was a second album, and was just clarifying my first post.
  14. No argument with a lot of what's been said, BUT - I'm sure Zappa doesn't smell so great these days either - probably never did. And, at least for me, his music always stank.

  16. Very nice reissue in good sound. Alternatively I suggest finding the 4 Dodds issues on Classics and the Neatwork with the alts. Dodds is one of my favorite artists. More for the Want List. Besides what's been mentioned, the 4/22/27 recordings, including two alternates, are available on Frog 39 - Johnny Dodds: New Orleans Stomp - Johnny Dodds on Brunswick & Vocalion 1926-27.

  20. I'm not an aficionado of Brazilian music - just have 20 or so recordings that I like - so don't take this recommendation as gospel. To my ears, Cafe Brasil - a collection of choro performances done by older and younger musicians and singers. I was familiar with some of the performers when I bought this recording - Martinho do Vila, Dino 7 Cordas, Paulinho da Viola, Sivuca - and many of the others were new names to me. As I say, I'm not knowledgeable about the music, but this seems wonderful to me. Putting disparate musicians together often doesn't work, but it sounds to me as if this is one that came off just fine.
