You won't regret it, Paul! The Don Lanphere sides are very interesting, and Leo Parker's "Mona Lisa" is worth the price of the disc itself. Needless to say anything on the Haig and the Navarro sides, obviously. Yeah - I let this go for so long - first as a LP 2-fer, then as a CD - I figured I'd better go for it before it disappeared. Looking forward to listening to it.

Heard/saw Charlie Haden play with Jane Ira Bloom twice. Also heard him with the Liberation Music Orchestra once. The Bloom dates (also w. Ed Blackwell) were best. Also witnessed him chewing out a small record store owner for not having copies of his Horizon LPs in stock. This was 4-5 years after they were issued. After Haden left, the owner just shrugged his shoulders and said, "Hey, it's a small store. I can't keep everything in stock forever."

I was a fan of that film too. Until now, I thought I was the only one in America who was. It had some popularity in this area (Hudson Valley - NY state) because it was filmed here, but probably was ignored everywhere else. A shame, because it's a very good film. The film was pretty true to the novel, so you probably would like the novel too.

You beat me! I've got 140 to go - but this one brings me one closer. -
Finished Richard Russo's Nobody's Fool a couple of days ago. A number of scenes from the film Nobody's Fool were filmed in my old hometown, and I saw the film some years ago - very fine film. I hadn't read the novel until now, and it's more fleshed out than the film, as is to be expected. It's funny - I was able to read the novel without imagining any of the actors from the film, except for one. I couldn't get Paul Newman's image out of my mind whenever I read anything about Sully - the main character in the novel and the film. That speaks volumes about how well he played that role.

Happy for those who wanted this to happen. Hope you use it well and enjoy it. -
A friend of mine (a bassist) has played some gigs with Dick Johnson recently, and he asked him how it was to play with Wilbur Ware. According to my friend, Dick Johnson had nothing but praise for Wilbur Ware's playing. Incidentally, the line up for that Dick Johnson Riverside session is somewhat unique: Johnson, Dave McKenna, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones - though Johnson's playing is more bop influenced than the little what I've heard of his more recent playing. If I had heard "Lee-antics" from that Riverside session on a blindfold test instead of knowing what I was listening to, I'm sure I would have thought I was listening to some early Lee Konitz.

A very happy birthday to you, David!

Never heard that one, but I bought a Japanese Riverside reissue of Drew and Ware playing Jerome Kern tunes, and I remember it being much like your description of the Warren/Arlen recordings. I didn't keep the Kern record for long - sounded like something that might have been made for use as muzak. But why Drew and Ware? Very strange.

Thanks VERY much for posting that. -
Did a search and couldn't find a thread devoted to Wilbur Ware, so I thought I'd start one. I'll start with some quick thoughts about his playing in the hope that others will add their thoughts/ideas/feelings about his music. Whenever I listen to a record that Wilbur Ware plays on, I'm amazed/surprised by the complex simplicity of his playing. There are a lot of records with great Wilbur Ware on them. One of my favorites is Johnny Griffin Sextet (Riverside/OJC) - enjoy his short duets with Griffin on "Woody'n You" and especially on "Catharsis". From 1957 into early 1958, Wilbur Ware played on a slew of jazz record dates. Then it seems to have fallen apart. If there were such a thing as a musical heartbeat, Wilbur Ware's playing might be it. To my ears, and in my listening experience, Wilbur Ware's musical heir was Malachi Favors. I have no idea if they knew each other, or if Malachi Favors acknowleged Wilbur Ware as an influence. It just sounds that way to me.

My two favorites are the Duets album with Desmond and Brubeck and Rushing. I haven't collected or listened to a lot of Brubeck, so there might be a lot of decent recordings that I've missed, but the two I mentioned are good ones.

Can't say that I didn't see this coming. Many thanks to Jim for providing a place for all of us to to come together. I know that I've made some good friends and good acquaintances here. I've contributed in the past and would be willing to contribute in the future, but I'm sure that there's more than just $ involved. Jim can speak for himself, but with a family and a new child on the way, I'm sure that time and energy are also factors. Whatever happens, I've enjoyed my time here immensely, and I thank Jim and other members for that. -
