  1. With all of the rationalizations for illegal file sharing - CDs are overpriced, oop material should be available, shared files create a market for live performances, etc. - isn't the bottom line that a lot of folks want to hear music but just don't want to pay for it?
  2. Wishing you a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Marty!
  3. wow, this is what you're going to go by? how do you feel about the ESP royalty situation? I don't know what the ESP royalty situation is. Whatever it is, what does that have to do with illegal downloading/bootlegging?
  4. no, but it's also not necessarily fair to a musician/group to have some of their best work kept OOP for years or decades. I don't know about "fair", but if a musician was concerned about having their music remain in print, they should have had something dealing with that in the recording contract they agreed to. I do know that I don't have a "right" to be able to hear music just because it's out of print.
  5. Can't see how the test has any correlation with the ability to play football, especially quarterback. Who would you want as your team's quarterback: Dan Marino with a 16, or Brian Griese with a 39?
  6. I have a friend who's not large or overweight, but who can pack it in. He tells the story of going to a buffet, loading up his plate, eating that, and going back for seconds and thirds. At that point, a Sopranos-type put a heavy hand on his shoulder and advised him to "Save some food for the rest of the patrons." My friend took the hint.
  7. Bobby Bradford with John Stevens and the Spontaneous Music Ensemble - Volume Two (Nessa) Quick question for Chuck if he sees this: Why no liner notes on this? Or on Volume One - the only Nessas I can think of with no notes. Good cover photo on both volumes.
  8. Reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer hits golf balls into the ocean and George later rescues a whale by removing one of Kramer's golf balls from the whale's spout.
  9. Re-writing Martin Williams liner notes----now that ought to be punishable with jail time. Martin Williams' original liner notes are included in the new edition, and are worth reading or rereading. I found that Orin Keepnews' notes were worth reading just for the information about George Russell's use of editing and because they mention that Cannonball Adderley recommended that Keepnews hear the Russell band. Cannonball had bigger ears than I had suspected (and I'm glad that he did).
  10. You should change your topic title. I checked this out to find out who "Tommy Porter" was.
  11. Wasn't here yesterday, so belated
  12. Brian Morton's novel, Starting Out in the Evening - enjoyed reading most of it, but I felt that it lost its focus near the end.
  13. Can't say what I listened to most - I don't keep track, though that might be an interesting thing to do - but I do know that I listened to more Roscoe Mitchell than I ever had before.
  14. Happy Birthday!!
  15. A cliche - but true: In the end, things will work out ok. Just hang in and try to be as positive as you can be.
  16. Some of my favorite Charlie Haden - and Hampton Hawes
  17. Hank Mobley: Roll Call (BN - 1990's heavy vinyl)
  18. Thelonious Monk's Blue Notes. Miles Davis's Blue Notes. RVG remastered Ornette's Golden Circle recordings, even though he didn't record them. NY Is Now and Love Cry sound fine as LPs - the Cds are mediocre at best. It'd be nice to have them (with the non-LP tracks) in decent sound.
  19. Hope it's been a Very Happy Birthday! Thanks for keeping all of us informed on many topics.
  20. The Roches: We Three Kings The Roches started out singing Christmas songs, and I always enjoy listening to this record. My favorite off the wall - well, maybe not all that off the wall, depending on where you're coming from - Christmas song is Robert Earl Keene's "Merry Christmas from the Family" off his Gringo Honeymoon album. Plus my friend Decibel Dennis sends me a Christmas compilation CD every year with (mostly) stuff I've never heard before, and with a lot of stuff probably hardly anyone has heard before. And that's always a treat to listen to.
  21. Agree with you completely. The other side of it is that there are plenty of singers who ignore the meaning of lyrics, even though they may sing them.
  22. BeBop's Heartbeat (Savoy Jazz) - Bird, Diz, John Lewis, Al McKibbon,Joe Harris at Carnegie Hall, 9/29/47 Just listened to Bird smoke "KoKo".
  23. Ugh..... Missed ya, Joel. Welcome back!
  24. Enjoyed the clip. Wonder if Teo edited the film?
  25. Man! Gotta be at least 25 years since I've played that one.
