  1. Clint West & the Boogie Kings, Rufus Jagneaux, Joe Barry, et. al.: The Jin Story Volume One - Bayou Boogie (Ace) - includes a great version of Joe Barry's hit, "I'm a Fool To Care" in French - "Je Suis Bet Pour T'aime".
  2. Just a few comments, some echoing other posters previous comments: Listening to Money Jungle, I get the impression that there was a lot of feeling in the studio that day. I hear a certain amount of reverence, but a lot more competitiveness, perhaps even aggression at times - mostly on the part of Mingus. Much of the time, Max is like a third wheel on a two wheel bike. Ellington's and Mingus' playing has such a strong rhythmic quality that Max almost sounds superfluous on most of the tracks, at least to my ears. Love "Le Fleures Africaines" - my favorite track. Money Jungle isn't a record I listen to much. Perhaps my aversion is a consequence of the conflict I hear in it - though I can imagine that same quality might attract others to it. My copy is a Japanese LP reissue of the original LP. I bought the second CD reissue, wasn't happy with the sound and decided to stick with the LP.
  3. Zoot Sims Quartet: Zoot (Cadet Japan)
  4. Keep hangin' in, Freddie.
  5. Yes, but when Paul speaks, people listen. (Or was that E.F. Hutton? ) I'll take Lauren Hutton. Me too!
  6. As far as I know Ran Blake's Rapport and Film Noir (Arista) have never made it to CD.
  7. Can't find either one listed on the "guests" page. http://www.themikedouglasshow.com/ Possibly another talk show out of Philly. If so, my bad.
  8. Definitely my very least favorite Mingus album. My feelings also. I bought it when it was released on LP and got rid of it shortly thereafter.
  9. I believe that there was mention that Walt Dickerson and Sun Ra appeared on Mike Douglas' show in the late 60's when Impressions of a Patch of Blue was issued. Can't find it here - perhaps it was on the BNBB.
  10. If there's anyone who loves music still working at Blue Note, it must be depressing as hell for them - even worse than working an ordinary 9 to 5.
  11. Last night: Ellington/Mingus/Roach: Money Jungle (UA/King Japan)
  12. Reading the last pages of this thread is like being with a bunch of junkies waiting for their connection to arrive. Just kidding (mostly). Lighten up, guys. Listen to some other music and forget about the Trane box for now. It will arrive when it arrives. You're just making yourselves crazy.
  13. Charles Mingus: Blue Bird (America)
  14. Adam Hastett: You Are Not a Stranger Here - Disturbing and interesting short stories read on a recommendation from ghost of miles on this thread. Thanks for the rec.
  15. Monk Blue Note box - 11/21/47 ("Monk's Mood", etc.) & 7/2/48 ("Mysterioso", etc.) sessions
  16. I'll throw in a mention of Pithecanthropus Erectus and Blue Bird, both on America - neither would be on my list of desert island Mingus records, but they're good records and are definitely overlooked. They marked a return to recording for Mingus after a five year hiatus. Cumbia and Jazz Fusion probably deserves a mention in this thread too, tho I don't know how overlooked it is.
  17. Definitely appreciated here.
  18. Hitting the downtown Tower in NYC was a treat I looked forward to back in the day. There was always a great selection of jazz, blues, r&b, ethnic - just a lot of great music to choose from. These days, buying online is just easier - tho I'd patronize Tower if one were nearby. Hope they make it, just for the old time connection I have.
  19. Has Max Roach's Solos (Baystate) ever made it to CD?
  20. Couldn't be better here - Dutchess County, N.Y. - 70's, low humidity, light breeze, a few clouds. If only it would stay like this for the next month or so.
  21. Been thinking about the Capitol Jazz set for a while. I have the feeling that there's too much superfluous material on it for me, but I guess if there's ever a time to pull the trigger, this month is it. Ah well - 20 more days to decide ....
  22. My wife never listened to music except as background before she met me. I married her because I loved her, not to have a listening buddy. These days though, sometimes I'll be playing a jazz record and she'll hear something in the music and have an intelligent coment to make about something that I've missed. When we were dating, I'd usually play something in the bop or hardbop genre, and that would be fine with her.
  23. My world is better for having heard his music. Thanks, Mr. Jordan.
  24. Nice Paul, Know anyone who discounts this one ? Its $120 in my neck of the woods. Haven't seen it discounted, unfortunately. I agonized a while before I went for it.
  25. Either Someday My Prince Will Come or Kind of Blue - got both around the same time - sometime in '63
