  1. I don't know what really happened - and it seems as if ESPN isn't saying much - but it would seem that if it were just a hug, an apology would suffice. Given our litigious society, ESPN is probably just protecting their ass.
  2. Best wishes and good luck to Mr. Anderson in his new venue!
  3. When I read she was 68, I was reminded (again) that I'm getting up there too. Anyway, belated happy birthday wishes to Joanne Brackeen.
  4. I have the 2 LP version of Attica Blues Big Band. It's since been reissued as a 2 CD set. Haven't listened to it in a long while, though I have good memories of it. I liked it more than the Impulse Attica Blues.
  5. There is a Base Italian pressing from the 80s, with the typical black-on-white Base logo. The original French pressing has a black label with orange graphics, cat. no. 28976 (September 28, 1976 recording date). The other Uniteledis Shepp, afaik, was not reissued by Base. Jef Gilson and Gerard Terrones both had something to do with the label, though I've always heard it was mostly Gilson's deal. The inner sleeves and pressings look more like Palm than Futura/Marge. Maybe brownie could shed some light? The Japanese also got into the act with this set. I have it on a Japanese JVC issue - JVC stickers pasted over "VICTOR" printed on the LP labels.
  6. ... I'd probably be listening to some music right now.
  7. I have a number of Lacy/Waldron collaborations, but Herbe de L'oubli & Snake-Out and Let's Call This - both duo (except for Enrico Rava on 1 cut) 2 LP sets on hat ART are the two I enjoy the most and return to most often. They were recorded over a 3 day period - August 13-15, 1981 in Paris, and for me there's a magic in these recordings. (I realize that's not very "critical", but so be it.) I could live with these just two sets and be happy without any other Lacy/Waldron. Also just want to mention Interpretations of Monk on DIW. One of the 4 CDs is by a band with both Lacy and Waldron, along with Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, Charlie Rouse, Richard Davis, and Ed Blackwell. I've only played it once, so I can't comment with any authority, except to say that I have good memories of the one listen.
  8. Anyone looking for some first rate post 1990 Archie Shepp should try Tenors of Yusef Lateef and Archie Shepp (YAL) - fine playing by both men, and it sounds as if they enjoyed playing together. Shepp's playing since about 1980 has been erratic, to say the least, but his playing on this CD shouldn't disappoint any fans of his early recordings. P.S. - No vocals on this one.
  9. A couple of Riversides that haven't been reissued: Lil Armstrong: Satchmo and Me - a spoken word reminiscence "George Crater" (Ed Sherman): Out of My Head - period (early 60's) jazz comedy
  10. A few more that I don't believe ever made it to CD - if I'm wrong, I'm sure that someone here will know: Don Cherry/Jon Appleton: Human Music Bill Lewis: Khan Jamal: The River Archie Shepp: Shepp a Massy
  11. Kevin, thanks for sharing memories and stories about your father. I went to a memorial service two weeks ago, and a son spoke for over half an hour about his father. When he finished, I felt that I had met his father and had spent time with him, even though neither was true. I had that feeling after reading what you wrote. You're lucky to have had a father like that.
  12. I remember hearing of his death. I was riding in my car with with a friend and the news came over the car radio. My friend's first child had had been born that day, and I felt a great gladness for him, and at the same time I was crushed by the news of John Coltrane's death.
  13. Hadn't thought of that possibility. Guess that's a result of being an ignorant english speaking only individual.
  14. I only lost about 900 posts, but it'd be nice to have them back.
  15. Why did the story put 'Selmer' and 'jazz legend' in quotes? I guess Selmer might be ok, because it's a brand name, but was the writer questioning the fact that Ornette is a jazz legend?
  16. Man, I like Hoagy Carmichael, but you could give me another lifetime and I probably would never listen to ten CDs - pass.
  17. Tom Sancton: Song for My Fathers - a fine memoir of a boy growing up in New Orleans in the 1950's and 60's, his thoughts and stories about his father - a writer, an eccentric character, and an honest man; stories and memories of his musical fathers - among them, N.O musicians George Lewis, George Guesnon, Joe Watkins, Jim Robinson, and many others; race relations in New Orleans in the 60's; and portraits of people who were associated with the early days of Preservation Hall and the New Orleans traditional music scene - lots of good stories. I truly enjoyed reading it, and I plan to try to find a copy of Tom Sancton Sr.'s first novel, Count Roller Skates, and to read that.
  18. It's only 10 a.m., and it's already friggin' hot here! "Here" is Dutchess County, N.Y. edit: I guess that hot is relative. I could be somewhere else where it's worse.
  19. The session listing in John Goldrosen and John Beecher's Remembering Buddy - The Definitive Biography of Buddy Holly agrees with what Larry said. This discography gives a complete listing of the musicians on the "True Love Ways" date, and Abraham "Boomie" Richman is listed as the tenor saxophonist. You can't believe everything you read, but putting Larry's ears together with the session listing, I'd bet that Boomie Richman/Richmond played that solo. Part of the confusion with Boomie Richman and Sam "The Man" Taylor may have come from the fact that Taylor played on the Holly session in June, 1958 that produced "Early in the Morning".
  20. I just read the booklets and then I don't have to listen to the CDs.
  21. Bobby Bland: Blues in the Night (Ace)
  22. I just looked on the Concord site, and not only is New Directions available directly from them, it's on sale for $7.98. Looks like they may be having a clearance sale on the OJC Limited Edition stuff, so it may be now or never if there are titles you want. Personally, I'm willing to wait and see what Concord does with the Prestige/Riverside/Milestone catalogs before judging them.
