  2. John Jackson in Europe (Arhoolie)
  3. Johnny Hodges & the Ellington Men: The Big Sound (Verve Japan)
  4. 35. More than I would have thought - I never counted before. Maybe Mosaic should give us a group discount.
  5. Anyone here familiar with Arturo "Sauce" Gonzalez? He played on a couple of Doug Sahm records - played a short but tasty solo on "When I Fall in Love" off The Last Real Texas Blues Band. I'd like to hear more - if there is more.
  6. Just hope that the answer doesn't have a connection to the blowin' in from chicago vol. 2 thread.
  7. I have a DCC LP which sounds fine. I'm sure that someone has something that sounds better, or a playback system that sounds better. I'm just glad that Cliff Englewood started this thread because I hadn't listened to this music in quite some time, listened yesterday, and it sounded as good or better than ever. What more could I want? - Sonny at one of his peaks, fine Max, Doug Watkins and Tommy Flanagan. I'm happy that I was led back to the music. Like almost everyone else, I get crazy at times over sound quality. Case in point: I bought the DCC to replace a Prestige/Fantasy 2-fer some years back. I'm finding out (at least until the next time I get crazy) that as long as I have a CD or LP that sounds good, I should be happy with that. The music is the most important thing. But, as I say, I'm sure I'll get caught up in the craziness again at some point. I just hope that everyone else will get as much pleasure from listening to Saxophone Colossus as I did yesterday. P.S. - Haven't heard the RVG, but from hearing several others, I'm sure it sounds very fine, once you can get past the short tape problem.
  8. Don Cherry: Art Deco (A&M)
  9. Gilbert Arenas - At least I'm not someone I can't stand.
  10. Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus (Prestige/DCC)
  11. Doug Sahm & Augie Myers: The "West Side" Sound Rolls Again (Amigo)
  12. Sonny Clark: Cool Struttin' (BN/King Japan)
  13. Yeah, Tony. It's called the "West Side" Sound Rolls Again. It was originally issued in the U.S. on Teardrop Records - think that was the label - the pressing was so bad that I got rid of my copy. It was reissued in Sweden on Amigo Records in listenable form. When I asked Doug Sahm if he'd sign my copy back in 1995, he said that the guy who ran Amigo never returned the tapes, so they may be lost somewhere in Sweden. Anyway, you're right - West Side Rolls is a great, great record.
  14. Gotta admit I'm kinda "heartened" by that info.
  15. Me too. One of the great intros in all of doo wop.
  16. Sad to read this confirmation of Rocky Morales' death. I removed the ? from the title of this thread. Rocky Morales was one the last great r&b/rock n roll tenor saxophonists. My introduction to his playing was on Doug Sahm's The Return of Doug Saldana LP - though he'd played and recorded with Doug Sahm more than ten years prior to this recording. One listen to Doug's intro - "West side tenor! Do it Rocky!" - and Rocky's wailing solo on "Wasted Days, Wasted Nights", and I was hooked. I'll be listening to Rocky's tenor until I can't listen anymore. I hope that there are Forum members who perhaps knew Rocky, played with him, heard him play live - I only heard him live once, and that was a great night - or, like myself, mostly heard his music on records, will pay their respects. Rest well, Rocky. You were one of the cats.
  17. Does anyone know if the tapdancer was replaced at the recording session, or was Haynes playing this part decided upon before the session took place? If the replacement took place at the session - any idea who the tapdancer was?
  18. I'll take your word for that, Chris. Don't wanna see them.
  19. Happy birthday and Keep on wailin'!
  20. No salt for me. I lived in Minnesota from ages one to nine, and never heard of salt on watermelon. I'll have to remember to ask my mother - who's a native Minnesotan - if she or anyone she knew ever did the salt thing.
  21. Can't find either one listed on the "guests" page. http://www.themikedouglasshow.com/ Possibly another talk show out of Philly. If so, my bad. Bad memory on my part. I just checked the liners on the Patch of Blue reissue, and Frances Davis writes about seeing Dickerson and Sun Ra on "an afternoon talk show in Philadelphia". Apologies for passing on faulty information.
  22. Sir Douglas Quintet: The Return of Doug Saldana (Philips) - I recently heard from a musician friend that Rocky Morales, the tenor saxophonist who played those soulful saxophone solos on so many Doug Sahm records had died recently. I hope that's not so, but my friend got the news from a musician who had played with Rocky, so it's probably true. I played this record in his memory - his playing on "She's Huggin' You, but She's Lookin' at Me" and "Wasted Days, Wasted Nights" was my introduction to his playing 35 years ago, and his tenor has given me a lot of pleasure over the years. I had forgotten that Rocky Morales had signed my copy of this record when he was on tour with Doug Sahm. Autographs don't mean a lot to me these days, but this one added some memories while I was listening today.
  23. I got an e-mail from a musician friend recently, and he mentioned that Rocky Morales, the tenor saxophonist who recorded many times with Doug Sahm had died. My friend got the news from a fellow musician who had played with Rocky. Very sad news if it's so. Perhaps one of our Texas members can let us know if he has, indeed, passed.
  24. Damn! That's at least a month's listening. Welcome.
