  2. A disgusting hack - the fact that his obit is as long as it is speaks volumes about American society.
  3. Michael Hurley & Pals: Armchair Boogie
  4. Guy Davenport's essay "Ezra Pound 1885-1972" in The Geography of the Imagination"
  5. Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Song Book (Speakers Corner) - LP 1
  6. "Donna, Donna, da Prima Donna". Part of a dream I had last night was about meeting a young woman who was Dion's girl friend, and this was the soundtrack. Weird how these things happen.
  7. So, you like that type of woman. Don't tell my wife.
  8. "Meeting E.P." by Samuel Hynes in the June 12, 2006 New Yorker - A Marine pilot seeks out Ezra Pound. and Michael Dirda's essay on Guy Davenport in Readings.
  9. Can't add much to that. I'll just add an "amen" to what you wrote.
  10. Watched a couple of Jane Russell flicks yesterday - her 85th birthday. Always had a thing for her when I was a kid.
  11. Ella Fitzgerald singing "I'm Beginning To See the Light".
  12. What label is it on?
  13. Ella and Louis (Verve France)
  14. Good one, but we're still waiting for a Sangrey story ....
  15. Happy 41st, Scott! Hope it's a great day for you.
  16. I wonder if anyone cares about jazz "journalists" except the "journalists" themselves. There was a time when that wasn't the case.
  17. Johnny Hodges and his Orchestra: Blues-A-Plenty (Verve/Classic)
  18. Another vote for the 1930's Ellington material. Perhaps if we get enough feedback for this, the thread could be forwarded to Mosaic. If anything does happen, it will probably be a couple of years down the line, but if it happens it will be well worth waiting for.
  19. Happy birthday! Hope you enjoy your day and have many more.
  20. I was in an eclectic mood today, so I ordered the following from CD Universe: Clarence Williams: New Orleans Pioneer 1923-1941 Prince Far I: Under Heavy Manners Johnny Cash: Unchained Tiny Grimes: In Swingville John Cale: Paris 1919
  21. Congats! Hope that you'll be as happy as I am.
  22. Actually, I believe that Stanley has a copyright on that topic.
  23. I was reading an article on cinematographer Gregg Toland in the June 19, 2006 New Yorker, and came across a mention of "the writer and producer" Lester Koenig. I wondered if this was the man behind Contemporary Records, did a quick google search, and found that they were one and the same. Lester Koenig was an assistant producer to William Wyler. He refused to testify before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee when called to do so and was blacklisted in the film industry. He started Contemporary Records and began a full time career in the jazz record business after his blacklisting - he had started Good Time Jazz previously. The film world's loss became the jazz world's gain. The world of jazz recording might well have been different had he not been blacklisted. I had no knowledge that Mr. Koenig was involved in the Hollywood film industry before reading the Toland article. I just thought I'd share this with any others who didn't know. I respected him as a man who presented many fine (and well recorded) recordings to the jazz community. I now respect him at least as much, if not more so, for his non-cooperation with HUAC. I don't know whether this belongs in the Misc. Music, Misc. Non-political, or Political threads, so I put it here. Jim - If you feel that it belongs elsewhere, please move it.
  24. Neil Young: Unplugged (Reprise Germany)
  25. Time to drop all the speculation and let the man rest in peace.
