  1. I'm glad I'm here and not there.
  2. You can pick up either the Complete Hot 5's and 7's on Columbia or Hot 5's and 7's on JSP - remastered by John R.T. Davies. Some people prefer one over the other, but both are fine.
  3. You left off the New Haven Street address!
  4. Hope it's a great birthday!
  5. Just curious - Is there any established correlation between "deep groove" and sound quality?
  6. I have a copy that I'm keeping, so I'm just curious. Are you buying or selling?
  7. You won't be a kid for much longer, so enjoy it now. Happy birthday!
  8. Simple solution for all these "Clean" companies - make your own damn films if you don't like what's out there.
  9. A bit late, but I hope all went well, Joel.
  10. Peter Pouncey: Rules for Old Men Waiting
  11. All the best to you, Jack! Hope it's a great birthday.
  12. I only know this because my wife was reading A.J. Jacobs' The Know-It-All recently, and asked me who was buried in Grant's Tomb? Having watched You Bet Your Life faithfully, I gave the accepted answer. I found out that I was only partially correct. Julia Dent Grant, Ulysses S. Grant's wife, is also buried there.
  13. Fascinating article. I have a number of recordings done by David Lewiston in my collection, and hope to have at least a few more in time. My favorite is Black Music in Praise of Oxala and Other Gods on Nonesuch Explorer - wonderful music recorded by Mr. Lewiston in Columbia, Ecuador, and Brazil. I owe David Lewiston many, many thanks for all of the pleasure that his recordings have given me.
  14. NRBQ lived in Clinton Corners, N.Y. in 1968. I was staying at a friend's place back then, decided to take a walk down the back roads near his home, and came upon a large old house and a large mailbox with NRBQ painted on it. I thought about knocking on the door, but figured I'd just be be bothering them, and kept walking. Thinking about it now, I should have knocked. They were too well known to be considered a "local band", but The Band lived in this area for a number of years, and Levon Helm and (I believe) Garth Hudson still reside in this area.
  15. Jimmy Heath and Brass: Swamp Seed (Riverside Japan)
  16. Archie Shepp: Mama Too Tight (Impulse mono)
  17. The Ellington Era Volume One (Columbia) - 1937-38 sides
  18. Chuck - I've always been impressed by the mentions you've made of your family and the importance that your marriage and your family hold for you. Congratulations to both of you!
  19. Benny Carter & Dizzy Gillespie: Carter, Gillespie, Inc. (Pablo)
  20. The only advice I can offer is just enjoy the music. And when the collecting becomes more important than listening - that's happened to me more than once - just stop collecting for a while and listen to what you've got.
  21. Never met the man, but heard him play several times, and he was always announced as Nid - linger - long i. Of course, it's possible that the people who introduced him were wrong, and I've been pronouncing his name incorrectly for 40 years. edited - linder to linger - duh!
  22. Eddie Condon and his Band; The Liederkranz Sessions - 1939 and 1940 (Commodore W. Germany)
  23. Woke up this morning with Ellington's "Creole Love Call" in my head - a good one for an overcast/rainy/somewhat muggy morning.
  24. I don't know anything about Terri Hinte except what I've read here, but this certainly doesn't bode well for the future of the Fantasy catalogue, especially the more obscure items. Chuck was prescient when he started the thread about getting the OJCs while they're available. Grab any obscure OJCs, OBCs (all of those are pretty obscure), Specialty's, Prestiges, etc., while you can. It's a pretty sure bet (despite what their pres. says) that Concord won't repress them.
  25. Henry "Red" Allen's Feeling Good (Columbia) would make a fine Mosaic Single.
