Roland Kirk/John Cage: Sound? is available on dvd, paired with David, Moffett, & Ornette - "The Ornette Coleman Trio" 1966. I haven't seen the Kirk/Cage, but saw the Ornette on video and it alone is well worth the price of the dvd.

← Zane Massey also plays on a couple of cuts on Roy Campbell's New Kingdom (Delmark) CD.

I got the Rudd discs for the same reason you did and felt the same disappointment when I heard them. I agree that volume 2 is better, but I haven't been able to get myself to break up the set. The collector in me, I guess. It was a pretty perverse decision on Rudd's part to debut these unknown tunes with such skeletal instrumentation. ← Talking about Nichols' music interpretations, I remember this one being not bad: Sound samples are here: http://www.k2b2.com/blue_chopsticks.html ← I'd highly recommend that puppy. When Nichols asked Neidlinger to one day see that his tunes got recorded with strings and horns , I'm absolutely sure that he didn't picture the raggedy bluegrass/western swing slant of these interpretations. Still, they work for me. Then again, as I hinted above, I'm a Herbie Nichols fanatic, and I appreciate just about any cover of his tunes, at the very least for the fact that they raise the man's profile that infinitesmal notch or two. Seriously, this is a nice record. Anyone hip to Duck Baker's finger-picked solo guitar tribute to Nichols, entitled Spinning Song(Avant)? It's both beautiful and amazing. ← I'm a fan of both the Neidlinger and the Baker sides. If you're looking for conventional takes on Herbie Nichols' music, look elsewhere. If you dig unique and honest playing, you'll probably enjoy both of these. Incidentally, Duck Baker also plays on one track of Roswell Rudd's Broad Strokes (Knitting Factory) CD - "Sassy and Dolphy" - a trio with Roswell Rudd and his son Christopher.

Five Warren Luckey r&b instrumentals (w. Haywood Henry, Mickey Baker, Ernest Hayes, Peck Morrison, & Specs Bailey) recorded for Joe Davis' Jay-Dee label in 1955 were issued on a Flyright CD - Thunderbolt (Flyright 29). These are very fine tenor r&b sides and are probably representative of some of the music he played at the Baby Grand clubs.

Cheer up. Charles has more replies.

Three of my favorite Tony Bennett tracks were recorded with a Stan Getz group - Getz, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones - and not released until 1983 on a Columbia compilation, Singin' Till the Girls Come Home. The tunes are "Just Friends", "Have You Met Miss Jones", and Clear Out of this World" - unusual and well done examples of Tony Bennett singing with a jazz group. I don't know if they've been reissued since then. If not, the LP is well worth looking for.

Seconded - Wonderful music!

Their reissues do.

This is debatable. I like the stereo "Monk's Music". Gigi Gryce/Donald Byrd "Jazz Lab" was issued in stereo originally, but turns up in mono on the CD. I guess it has to do with one's preferences, and probably the system on which one listens. Whoever is making these choices at Fantasy obviously prefers the mono, but doesn't mean that we all will agree with him. ← The Acoustic Sounds 2 LP 45 rpm edition of Monk's Music is in stereo and sounds very fine to my ears - it should, considering what it costs. But, as a wise man (or was that a salesman) once said - good music is priceless.

Isiah Thomas Is a Disaster for Knick Fans
paul secor replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The title of this thread says it all. I'm just glad that I'm not a Knick fan. -
A query: I was listening to Mark Whitecage & Liquid Time (Acoustics) today and remembered hearing him on a radio show hosted by Ramsey Ameen & Spencer Richards on WBAI (NYC) perhaps 20 years ago. He played some recordings of "sound sculptures" that he had created. I can't recall exactly what those were - I may have a cassette tape of the show buried away somewhere. I do remember that the sounds they made were unique, interesting, and very listenable. Anyway, my question is, does anyone know if any recordings of his sound sculptures were ever released commercially? I'm sure if they were, someone here will know. If the cassette turns up, I'll listen to it and post here.

(Re)listened to Lee and Hal Galper: 'Windows' on Steeplechase today - very fine Lee. Galper's playing is a little too romantic for my taste - he's drunk too long at the well of Bill Evans - especially on the ballads. He's ok on the medium tempo tunes. I don't think that I could take an album of just him. But here his romanticism is a good contrast to Lee's playing and the album is a very good one.

Just realized that this is supposed to be a Ray Nance/Ben Webster thread. I hope that the discussion can go back to that. Apologies for my part in turning it into a pro and anti Sinatra thread.

Another non-Sinatra voice heard from. I can't stand the wise ass arrogant attitude that I hear when he sings. For me, its as if he doesn't let any vulnerability come through - even when he wants to. That's my opininion - I know there are many, many, many, and many more who disagree. They can listen to him and I'll listen to other singers.

Happy 34th! Hope that it's a great day for you.

As a Laker fan, I'm not thrilled by this. My take on Kwame Brown is that he's just a lazy ass. I guess Phil Jackson feels that he can turn him around.

For Pre-WW2 blues, Yazoo is a personal favorite. They seem to get the best possible sound out of rare and often poorly recorded material. Ace Records in the UK does a very good job with often obscure blues and r&b reissues - very good sound, good liner notes (but usually and unfortunately no discographical details). Bear Family does great reissues of country, blues, rock & roll, r&b, even pop. In terms of completeness, they outMosaic Mosaic. Unfortunately, the completeness can be overwhelming - I don't listen to my Bear Family boxes very often, and there are a few that I haven't yet listened to all the way through. However, that's my problem and not their's.

AND some of us who bought the damn thing 40 years ago. Better they reissue Red Allen. ← I bought Red Allen's Columbia release 40 years ago - still have it - but it would be a good thing if Columbia would reissue it so others could hear it. Perhaps if the Brookmeyer sells enough, Bob Belden can work on getting that reissued - hard to imagine it selling 800 copies, but stranger things have probably happened.

I was eating with friends at a Cambridge restaurant (no clue what the name was) about 15 years ago and they were playing some great obscure Louisiana r&b sides. One of my friends asked if I was able to detect what tune was playing - can't recall now if I could or couldn't - my memory seems to be totally shot. Anyway, it turned out that he made compilation tapes for the restaurant to play in exchange for an occasional free meal.

I'm on board for a copy. Interesting to see that there's a Tony Bennett cut on this. Columbia issued three other Bennett cuts on a 1983 LP - Swingin' Till the Girls Come Home. They were recorded without Bob Brookmeyer - just Getz, Hancock, Carter, and Elvin. There's probably not enough material for a full Tony Bennett with jazz group release, but I'm looking forward to hearing what the Bennett cut sounds like. The three tracks I have are very good - though my wife's comment as she walked through the door while I was listening to them this morning was, "What is this? It sounds like I've walked in on a cocktail hour at a bar! This isn't anything like you usually play."

Mike, Thanks for starting this thread. I bought this CD from from Daedalus (along with a couple of others - the Bonfa was kind of an afterthought). I played half of it on my ride home from work the day I got it and was disappointed. I just couldn't get into it. I set it aside for another listen and didn't do that until today. Perhaps it was the stress of the workday, but today I can hear it - wonderful music for a lazy Sunday morning!

Have a great birthday!
