???? Was that meant as a compliment? I hear little or no personality in Ron Carter's playing, so perhaps it was meant as a compliment, but I doubt it. I'd trade every Ron Carter solo in my collection for a few bars of Mingus.
  2. They've been mentioned twice before, but once more won't hurt. The pop stuff is great, but under NO circumstances should you miss out on his gospel recordings with the Soul Stirrers: Sam Cooke with the Soul Stirrers - Specialty 7009 (includes some early pop sides also) The Soul Stirrers: Jesus Gave Me Water - Specialty 7031 The Soul Stirrers: The Last Mile of the Way - Specialty 7052 This music is classic, great, beautiful - whatever word you want to lay on it. And you don't have to be religious to be moved by it. Try one of these and you'll be listening to it for the rest of your life.

Why is he a pain in the ass? ←
  4. I can't imagine the pain and distress that Ravi Shankar is feeling. When something is damaged or lost, I try to think that it's only a thing, and that things can be replaced, but I would imagine that when you're a musician, your instruments become almost a part of you. I hope that they're repaired and that he's able to play them as he did before.
  5. I don't completely understand the point you are trying to make. ← Seems pretty obvious to me - and good advice to boot.

Listened to Dialogues, his duet CD with Portuguese guitarist Carlos Paredes (Antilles) this morning. Another recommendation, though I wonder if it's still in print - if not, it seems to be possible to find almost anything these days.
  7. Storyteller, a Ray Davies solo record, is a very good one - Ray reminiscing about his (and the Kinks') past and playing tunes. Haven't played it in several years - this thread makes me want to listen to it again.
  8. Congratulations! Incidentally, I just listened to your archived Jazztet program and will be picking up the Mosaic on the basis of what I heard. I was undecided before that.
  9. Additional for Sightsong (w. Malachi Favors) and Interpretations of Monk. A couple of other recommendations: Afrisong (Why Not) - a solo recording - and Lifea Blinec w. Joseph Jarman, Douglas Ewart, Amina Claudine Myers, and Thurman Barker (Arista/Novus) - probably never reissued on CD, but well worth looking for if you listen to LPs.

His playing with a pianist is great also - check out his duets with Hampton Hawes - As Long as There's Music - mentioned earlier in this thread. His duet album with Denny Zeitlin - Time Remembers One Time Once - is a good one too.

    Funny Rat

Thanks for this mention, brownie. I haven't listened to my copy of 'Nuovi Sentimenti' in years. I'll be getting it off the shelf and listening to it soon. My first (not my last) post on Funny Rat
  13. Looking forward to the Ellis and Edmund Hall discs.
  14. This morning: Art Pepper: The Way It Was! (Contemporary)
  15. Jean-Jacques Sempe - an artist who captures sides of our lives and times that many other artists miss. I love many artists' work, but his may just be my favorite.
  16. Just finished John Dufresne's 'Johnny Too Bad'. Dufresne is one of America's greatest dreamers.
  17. Charlie Patton & Frank Stokes: Best of's on Yazoo
  18. Missed it, but hope you had a great birthday! P.S. - just saw your mention of the Yazoos. I just picked up the Patton and Stokes Best of's. Hope you enjoy listening to yours - anything on Yazoo is a good listen.
  19. Yes! He nailed Nixon in his Poor Richard series, and it's not a stretch from Tricky Dick and his cronies to W and his.
  20. Had a similar experience at a gallery showing a number of Rothkos about twenty years ago. Sitting and looking at them for a period of time left me feeling as if I had entered his paintings and had lost myself inside them.
  21. As a long time Laker fan, I hope that Bynum turns out to be a good player. That said, weighing 285 - 300 lbs. (I've read both) doesn't bode well for someone who's 17 years old, even if he is 7 feet tall. I just hope that he doesn't eat his way out of the NBA. I also don't have much faith in Mitch Kupckak's decisions. Under him, the Lakers went from the NBA finals to the lottery in one year - how much of that was due to him and how much of it was due to Jerry Buss is something I'm not privy to. I hope that Kupchak learned enough from Jerry West to prove me wrong.
  22. Ted Curson: Tears for Dolphy (Arista/Freedom)
