  3. A nice entry on the Paris Tapes here: http://dougpayne.blogspot.com/2010/11/sun-ra-and-his-mythic-science-arkestra.html
  4. Some recent blog entries on Ayler here: http://improvisedsolo.blogspot.com/2010/10/albert-ayler-new-grass.html http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2010/sep/27/great-moments-jazz-albert-ayler
  5. The Penguin guide has been useful for me through the years as it is so full of cross references, and because of it's comprehensiveness. Though I agree that some of the reviews was not always on the spot, the sheer volume of worthwhile reviews made up for it. I also think the Penguin guide has done a useful job in getting lesser known artist's and albums recognized for their value. The guide has also been prominent in showcasing jazz musicians from other countries than US, especially some British jazz artists.
  6. This cover can be studied for hours. Where is Toshiko really? And who is her old pals? Is it the maid one of them? Or does the maid know her pals? Or does her pals like to wear maid clothes? Is the suitcase very heavy? What is in the suitcase? Is she waving to the photographer, her old pals or someone else? Maybe a lover? She's well and suitable dressed, is it cold outside? And so on...
  7. There is a great version on this record:
  8. This one is also a classic album with Nichols: I was thinking of getting these as well. Should be classic stuff here also.
  9. Duke Ellington - Such Sweet Thunder
  10. Will check this out. That's a creative album cover as well!
  11. Yes, women are still wearing big hats!
  12. From the product description: "The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings" is firmly established as the world's leading guide to recorded jazz, a mine of fascinating information and a source of insightful - often wittily trenchant - criticism. This is something rather different: Brian Morton (who taught American history at UEA) has picked out the 1000 best recordings that all jazz fans should have and shows how they tell the history of the music and with it the history of the twentieth century. He has completely revised his and Richard Cook's entries and reassessed each artist's entry for this book. The result is an endlessly browsable companion that will prove required reading for aficionados and jazz novices alike. 'It's the kind of book that you'll yank off the shelf to look up a quick fact and still be reading two hours later' - "Fortune". 'Part jazz history, part jazz Karma Sutra with Cook and Morton as the knowledgeable, urbane, wise and witty guides ...This is one of the great books of recorded jazz; the other guides don't come close' - "Irish Times". This might be a book with focus on the Crown and 4 star recordings from the previous guides, and some more text on the different selected albums?
