Yeah, I remember most of them struggled with that challenge. -

I know there was an episode of "Next Iron Chef" last season where they did something like that. They all had to cook with un-conventional equipment and specific chemistry ingredients. -

I think you might be onto something if you could make celery sticks taste like a Milky Way. If you happened to be in the weight management industry, the possibilities are endless. Up over and out. Use it as a weight loss tool, hmmm..., that is quite interesting. -

Nah, I respectfully disagree. On the one hand you have cooks who are artists, working with feverish inspiration to come up with surprising refinements, and on the other a berry that changes sour into sweet in your mouth, period. Which would you rather do, eat at this guy's restaurant or eat some goat's cheese and have it taste like a marshmallow? Agree. I realize this tricking the taste buds thing is the wave of the future and I have complete respect these folks coming up with all this creative "food chemistry" as JS puts it. But for me I'd rather go with a chef that is doing it the "old school" way. When I see people like Mario Batali or Masaharu Morimoto on Iron Chef doing their thing I'm truly amazed. -
Ah yes, the Democrats, is there no problem they cannot solve??? Superman wishes he had the track record of Democrats! I cannot wait til the Dems sock it to an American cartel like OPEC, and American companies such as British Petroleum, and Dutch Shell!!! It took a Democrat to clean up after W's daddy, now it'll take a Democrat to clean up after Baby Bush. By the way, this is kind of off topic, but what is the deal with some of these Republicans that still have Bush bumper stickers on their cars? Does anyone notice this or have seen this in their town? This really annoys me to no end. Same deal as those that still sport Kerry or Gore stickers, no?

I had no idea what one actually sounded like and had to find some sound clips. Now I know what you're all talking about..... Sugar Plum Fairy

I've got to try that leaving it in the husk business some day. I do Raichlen's quick and easy version of brushing a little olive oil and butter and throwing it right on the grill.

Over the weekend I ordered Season 1 of Welcome Back Kotter and Season 2 of Barney Miller. TV Land has jumped the shark and now officially sucks.

Are you changing your travel plans/habits.......

Much to my surprise JetBlue is one of those airlines. I know US Airways is doing it as well and I'm sure there are others. So when you select an aisle or window seat, you get an added fee as you are booking online? That's pretty stupid. It would be weird to book a flight and see all of the middle seats filled and the aisle/window available. What if you wait long enough that they have to give you an aisle or window seat first anyway? Then you aren't "requesting" it - there shouldn't be an additional fee. On JetBlue I paid an extra $20. Didn't see it until I selected my seat and clicked to pay. I assume you're correct and those seats are going to be given away for regular at some point. That is unless the flight is not full. So, I guess the further you book ahead the more you're getting screwed. -

For the business my monthly fuel bill is now around $20,000+. For the trucks that do not have hour meters I have Supervisors making random inspections to make sure crew trucks are not left running all day especially with the AC on. We run as many small trucks as possible (4 and 6cyl). I've also tried to condense schedules as much as possible. That usually translates to longer days but less miles driven, therefore less fuel used. I've cut back my travel a bit as well. Was making two trips monthly from NY to Arizona, now I'm going maybe once a month or every other. I'm having to do more business via-telephone or computer. We also have been doing things such as little incentives by way of cash and time off to encourage employee carpools. I'd say 50% of my employees are sharing rides. A half dozen or so that live close ride bikes. -

Happy Birthday, Jim. Sincerely hoping you have a great day with many more to follow. -
Made calzone lastnight. Stuffed with sausage from Bari, ricotta, broccoli rabe, fresh mozzarella and a little Fra Diavolo. Today, I've been marinating chicken wings since this morning and will be grilling them later on.

Happy Birthday Chuck Nessa!

That's my kinda day! Yeah, but I think Chuck is leaving out the part of his day right after Taco Bell. -
Larry, I've got nothing to add other than my condolences. Seems like about 6 months ago we were encouraging you to become a moderator while hoping Jim wouldn't shut this place down. You obviously had so much more going on to deal with, yet never lead on, unless I missed it. I tip my hat to you, sir. No doubt in time this music funk you're in will pass.

The band sounds horrible (and most likely intentionally so - May had the charts sent out to the band to get them road-tested for the studio, & Duke never pulled them out)! A wide stereo spread, a gazillion tones of reverb, a few ringers brought in (Al Porcino being one) helps hide that fact. But I had a speaker go out on me one time bavk in the day, and the vocal pretty much got lost, leaving the brass section. My GOD were they ragged! Of course, this being the Ellington band and all, it comes off wonderfully, that band could make loose and ragged sound profoundly beautiful, but I'm just saying, even by those standards... Reading shit like this always amazes me and I mean that as a compliment. You've got some deep ass ears, my friend. I've always thought the band sounded great and the album is one of my favorite Sinatra's. Never knew that shit about Porcino either. Doesn't ruin it for me, 'cause we obviously don't hear it the same way, but it will make me listen more closely. Oh, don't get me wrong - sometimes the Ellington band sounded better "ragged" than "tight". I'm just saying that this album is one of their raggediest, and that the folks @ Reprise covered it up REALLY well. But if you can find a way to get the vocals out of the mix & listen to the pitch, especially in the brass section...GOOD LORD is it all over the place. Same for the ensemble attacks - all over the place. But it works, and the solos are magnificent. Sinatra's been better, though, but he's been worse, too. The main thing, though, is the story that Duke deliberately sabotaged the charts (and therefore the session) by not having the band play them on the road beforehand, even though he had them and sent word back that all was going well. Some say that this was sending Sinatra "a message" for making overtures to Strayhorn about going onto his payroll. How serious those overtures were & how much truth there is to that story (others say that Duke was pissed about having Billy May write charts for his band in his style), I can't/won't vouch for, but it's all in the Will Friedwald Sinatra book, a book that I recommend, if with some non-deal-breaking reservations. Yeah, I'm not saying it's one of Frank's best and is obviously not close to Duke's best, but it was them together and that works for me. I'll have to give it a listen again later today to see if I pick up that raggedness. Playing it back in my mind I guess I can think/hear a little of what you're talking about.
