I started out with a lot of compilations, so I think overall they can be very helpful. In some cases I didn't even know I was buying compilations though and only found out when I ended up with the original. As far as Jazz goes, I no longer go for the compilations but still find myself picking one up from time to time when in search of certain rock music groups.
